Buy a book callled “cocktail codex” got mine 6 years ago, and it teaches you basically the fundamentals of drinks; basically there’s 5 cocktails and everything else is a variation of one of those. First year of bartending is rough. I’m assuming you started serving. If you are in a restaurant and not dive bar, don’t let servers bully you into taking tables on the other end of the restaurant. Take the bar. Within 5 minutes you can wind up going from dead, to 11 bar guests 6 high tops, and 9 tickets at service bar. The job is great, and you will grow quickly and adapt. I always love training new bartenders because it’s an exciting time with that promotion. It’s a lot of work, it’s rough, and often you don’t get appreciated, but you’ll start going home with a smile. For instance, Friday night was dead at the bar at most I had 5 people sitting at the bar and a couple tables and than at about 11:45pm a wedding party of 85 came in. Just me with a few servers (if you are allowed tell them to just grab whatever non alcoholic drinks are easily accessed behind the bar). Between 12ish and 2am (when we close) I made $900. How to single handedly deal with this is this; if a bar guest orders a drink, it mostly takes priority over service well. Especially with wedding parties, USE FIRST AND last name on the tab. Remain calm appearing, and smile. Remember the core concept of drinks, so if you don’t know a drink you can just ask what exactly they want (spirit, base, flavor). Cut people off when appropriate, ask for management help especially at the service well, and just get in a rythym and ride it. I prefer nights when I think at the 5 hour point I might only make $200, but the opportunity opens with a large group. It’s so easy once you get into a rythym. It requires a lot of multi tasking, using your knowledge, people skills, and more, but never once think about how long it will take you to clean up. Clean as you go when you can, but don’t think “damn after they leave I’ll be here for 2 hours”; it feels a lot better cleaning for over an hour when you feel almost a grand in your hand. Most importantly, if you plan to bartend long term (I have a masters degree in sociology, always wanted to work for a non profit, but found I love this industry, and even if I do get a different full time job I’ll still bartend at least 2 nights a week)MAKE SURE YOU ENJOY IT. If you don’t actually enjoy the whole thing; making drinks, serving drinks, being stern but friendly, the conversation, the work itself, than go back to serving (don’t mean that rudely) but if it’s just the bit of more money we make, serving works as quick money. You need to LOVE bartending or it will burn you out quicker than white phosphorous in a poppy field.

Secondly, placing drinks in stemmed glasses like in the video not only looks unprofessional (mostly due to people's biases about germs, despite bartenders constantly washing their hands and handling alcohol), but it can also cause spills since drinks in stemmed glasses are usually top-heavy.

Something that helps me is scan your tickets and if you have multiples of the same drink, do them all together!!!
