- Rolex may be the biggest watch brand in the world, but it's also the most secretive. As much as there is that we know about Rolex, there's just as much-or more-that we don't. Some of those things will be kept a secret until the end of time, while others just simply aren't that well known. So, here are five things you probably didn't know about Rolex.

this channel needs more recognition
Thank you very much :-)
less people watch the channel means more attention for those that do watch the channel.
You said it all. No comparison with any other channel on watches.
TheYungKingz tgv take a note.
Agree!
Hi! I am only 16 years old, but I have a huge passion for watches and jewelry. I've learned so much from your channel, so I just want to give a HUGE thank you! You're so inspiring.
Thanks very much, glad you're enjoying the channel!
TheChris812 we are so alike! However I am only 13. I’m planning on working at Rolex as a salesman and then work my way up to the executives.

An Kul nice good luck!
One other piece of trivia that my Authorized Dealer shared w/me - Hans Wilsdorf selected green as the official brand color of Rolex as a tribute to his wife who was Irish.
To be sure
There is nothing negative about that, therefore it did not make the list.
I thought Alfred Davies, Wilsdorfs brother in law was Welsh? as his name would suggest
@@kevinparker461daffodil yellow would have been bit much?
Wow, I had no idea Rolex didn't technically make its own movements until 2004. That's crazy! I've generally not paid much attention to Rolex because I just don't like their style, but I'm surprised.
The more I learn about watch brands...the more I recognize that a lot of their mystique is just nothing other than marketing.
Happy to see you return. I'm always fascinated by your knowledge and ability to share it in an interesting way.
Would love to hear your take on the Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso. Preferably a Tribute Duo, but don't let me tell you how to do your thing!
Thanks for watching! We've got some more JLC content coming up soon hopefully.
Guys, you're doing a fabulous job getting that many information in a fun and very well educated way across!
I love the subtle humour inbetween and the additional information.
Your channel deserves much more recognition imo.
Keep up the great work.
Regarding this video, a Rolex is definitely very high on my grail list, however, in light of your previous GS videos I'll pursue one of those first!
Cheers.
great work guys, my compliments. As a non english mother tongue I also appreciate the high standard of language.
Could you do a history of the Explorer stemming from the Oyster Perpetual to the 6601/1016 and so on? Also would be interesting to hear more about the 5500 with its "Air King" ties.
Great video as always. Easily the most knowledgable and consistent watch channel on CZcams. Cheers
James Williams Would love to see that, I feel like the Air King and Explorer don't get enough love. Would also love to see a more detailed review of the Oysterquartz to learn a bit more about it.
When we get the best watches in for the story we'll definitely tell it!
This channel deserves more subs. These videos are really good, quality videos. From the presentation of the content, to the look of the desk, the choice of words, to the editing. Everything just seems so on point to me. Props to you.
I love this channel and find it super informative - it’s the hands though, they drive me to distraction!
I'm no Rolex fan but boy this Oyster from 2:43 onwards is simply gorgeous!
It is!
Pretty sure it's the blue one.
BTW, the description calls it a Ref. 116200 (36mm Datejust), while the dial says it's a Date (so it should be 34mm, Ref. 115200).
It is blue, WF uses very warm lights in their videos. It looks amazing nevertheless.
I've bought a secon hand of same watch when I was leaving Dubai after two years spent there.....still have it and glad of it
I agree! I'd love to know what the name of the dial color is.
Great video, can you review the oyster perpetual collection? Many thanks
They do not review Rolex, they try to undermine them.
Always enjoy your videos. I would like to suggest you do one on JLC Reverso, if possible concerning the variations of the Ultra Thin manual wind.
Thanks! We've got some JLC content coming soon
Many people in the past asked Mr Wilsdorff what the name "Rolex" means, he never gave a clear anser but only said that he came up with this name during a ride on one of those trams in London. There is a photograph of him sitting in one of those trams in London. So who knows, maybe this was the 'eureka' moment. Love this channel, the best i've seen about watches. Great voice and a lot to learn. Thank you !!
All i heard was he wanted a short, simple, unique name that people will remember. That's it.
Agreed about the voice. He sounds like Datto from Destiny youtube videos (thats a game to all you older gen boys and gals).
Sounds like Datto? LOL...
A few theories copy/pasted from Wikipedia:
One story, never confirmed by Wilsdorf, recounts that the name came from the French phrase horlogerie exquise, meaning "exquisite clockwork" or as a contraction of "horological excellence". Wilsdorf was said to want his watch brand's name to be easily pronounceable in any language. He also thought that the name "Rolex" was onomatopoeic, sounding like a watch being wound. It is easily pronounceable in many
languages and, as all its upper-case letters have the same size, can be
written symmetrically. It was also short enough to fit on the face of a
watch.
Maybe he was rolling along on the tram and thought about Timex and put them together, rolling - timex, Rolex
Great video. But we’ve gotta talk about that Gerber Paraframe in the corner there. If you’re gonna have watch game like you do, you need your knife game in check.
Wow, even as a paper weight, Gerber is a questionable choice.
Legit was just thinking that. Had multiple thousand dollar watches can't buy a tastefull looking knife? It doesn't have to be a Chris reeve or somthing extravagantly expensive just somthing that's as functional as some of those watches. That knife probably needs 're sharpened after every use.
An eyesore as soon as I started watching
Daddy took my v card :(
popcorny11 u mad?
An excellent video! Can you do a video about Dutch watchmakers?
thank you for this interresting facts.
I enjoyed the vid very much. btw. Happy new year guys.
Thanks very much, and to you too.
Extremely informative. I very much appreciate insight into the history of the worlds top watch manufacturers. Understanding what makes a brand of horological significance is important to watch enthusiasts and to put together such a succinct yet detailed history of one of the world most well known brands is truly exceptional. Well done, keep up the good work and know that you have just earned yourself another subscriber.
Nice Camera... Nikon Vintage ... anyone can tell the model and year?
You should review a Daniel Wellington lmao
nooooo
Shitter!
MrDennisblue not
MrDennisblue it' a bit early for April fools lol
Fiat justitia ruat cælum it would be a perfect April fools joke
Not a fan of most of the Rolex lineup, but I definitely respect them greatly.
alpinestarsssss
Milgauss? Explorer?
The Explorer 2 polar is my favorite Rolex. One I will probably get in the future. I think the Explorer lineup is their best.
Great video and thanks for the excellent quality of the video itself and the information found within. Now do a top 5 list of how Rolex (and how they allow their AD's) to treat their customers. 🙂
Hi Sir, possible to do a Milgauss 116400GV review? black dial vs blue dial. Thanks
Your video and narration are excellent. Thank you for the journey through Rolex history.
Can you cover the milgauss Rolex?? I’d love that
That date at 2:58 mark is a great spec! What color is that dial?
Thank you very much for the informative history. Looking forward to more reviews. Great channel.
Thanks very much.
Congratulations, Your videos feature by far the best photography and lighting in the genre
Great video. I like the folding knife on top right corner. What's the brand/model?
Excellent insight into Rolex, but no mention of Zenith. To my understanding, Zenith has also supplied Rolex wth movements.
welcome back the best channel by far happy new year.
Thank you, and happy new year to you too!
Zenith has achieved the most watch chronometre prizes of all time and even more then Omega and Longines combined 😉
I discovered your channel yesterday and I've got to say, I love it! Very well done. I am curious, have you done a review of the Rolex 118238? I have searched and did not find one.
What color and size is that DJ? It looks gorgeous!
Great - v informative. Really enjoy listening to your videos.
I appreciate how this channel presents watch history with a serious near academic tone. Please keep up and I hope these contents help your sales or add to profits just from CZcams views!
I like expressive hand gestures, timings exceptional
Would you please confirm the dial color of Date 115200? Thanks.
Love the vibes of all these videos, great camera work.
Thank you for all the watches edutainment
My grandfathers shop in Singapore sold many Rolex's GC De Silva in Raffles Place in singapore. My dad ran the shop from many years. It would be great to hear if anyone still has paperwork or remembers buying their watch
How did you dent the camera?😊 Oh and i love your videos, keep it up!
Very nice video, something that many people dont know is that some yellow gold rolex watches until the 1990s were made out of 14k gold instead of 18k.The reason for that seems to be that for many countries 18k gold watches were illegal to import at that time.
Currently my favorite watch channel by far.
What ref is that datejust at 2:51 is that a green dial or just the lighting?
Great and well explained story behind Rolex!
which one was the first? Blancpain FF or Submariner?
CZcams’s finest channel for watch reviews. Well done!
Can you guys do something about more obscure brands from Eastern Europe like Probeda, Poljot, and Prim.
Some known and some less well know facts. Well done video ! As always ! Best wishes for the New Year to everybody @ Watchfinder & Co.
Great video , great voice!!!
Thanks very much!
What is up with the bracelet fitment on the Air King early in the video? There's something like a 2mm gap at the lugs.
Another excellent video. Surprised at your JLC pronunciation though.
Thanks for the information and Happy New Year.
This is a very appealing and interesting channel. I've learned a lot and it has motivated a lot of my interest for making watches. Hopefully once I graduate as a mechanical engineer I will try to get into the Patek School.
What colour is that date just sir? Matte Green? I love that colour
How do you get the watches ?
The cyclops lens came from Hans Washington his hands and a drop of water landed on the date window and magnified it. He yelled “I GOT IT!” 😂
You should do reviews on lower end watches and what the best available options are, by lower end I mean
Hugh Janues Wtf is TGV?
Pablo Algara TGV is the guy from The Urban Gentry
Hugh Janues 👍
Pure class
Mr Everything 😁
Gerber paraframe you should get your knife game in check
@2:15 Is that how you probounce Jaeger LeCoultre?
Always looking forward to videos from this channel
I find it quite funny how you make voiceover shots with just your hands moving
Vlad Maystr I’d be willing to pay to see him as a person rather than his hands.
@Joe Al You can definitely tell.
Do a review of the new Seiko Presage SPB045
Wears a Rolex and carries a $15 Gerber pocket knife😂
I feel like if you are not being sponsored by Gerber then you should look into getting an Al Mar Eagle Ultralight. I say this for two reasons. The first of which is that it will match the level of watch that you bring to the table in quality and the second and as sort of an interesting aside Al Mar has a history with Gerber. They used to be the same company but parted ways so the Al Mar can still be an homage to Gerber at the same time being a much higher quality knife.
That 20 dollar gerber paraframe lol
It's a strange feeling to watch a video from this channel and see something that I actually own. :-)
Great video. Please do a video on the history of Seiko please! Just as rich as the swiss marques.
The point of the video is to undermine Rolex, not log its history.
Interesting video even more interesting way of presenting it...!!!
Thanks very much!
I don't understand how Rolex is so expensive compared with watches that have better quality than their time pieces
daniel viegas amazing marketing.
High demand.
Is that a blue dial? It looks like a dark green or dark grey. I cannot tell but it looks unique and really cool.
Please review Patek world time
Awesome content and historical facts- keep it up
I personally prefer Air King, Datejust and Daytona
I want to know the background music please
Good insight.. thank you
What a name of main music ?
You should cover the unique way they avoid paying taxes 😜
Watch Geek haha
Why won't you do something on Rado's?
They say, If you don't like rolex, then probably you can't afford it.
Again a fantastic video from you showing a big amount of knowledge and research. Thanks :-)
YOu bited the style of weekly reviews.
Who remembers weekly reviews? the real deal!
In 1954, Pan American World Airways asked the company Rolex to design a timepiece that could display a second time zone. The background - during transatlantic flights planes pass through several time zones. Back then, Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) world time and the local time at the destination had to be available. Excellent review !
Here’s a bit of Trivia….if they were still made in England you would be able to walk in and buy one 👍🏻
q. WHAT does 'Air-King' signify? Anyone know. Happy N Yr!
Checkout 7:38 where the GMT hand meets its base at the middle of the dial...yikes. Why the hell is there so much splatter?
Very intresting video. Greetings from Italy!
Nice video.
Haven't checked all tge comments but I think adding Fidel Castro wearing 2 Rolex watches on each hand is also a quaint piece of Rolex history. James Bonds submariner in the movie, live and let die is one of the main weapons in the movie and is also worth a mention.
TopVelocity bond doesn’t count, he’s worn everything from pulsar to Breitling to omega to Rolex to Gruen to digital Casio. It was whatever brand paid to advertise in the movie got the gig. Rolex has an amazing marketing team.
It’s all well and good you know, but every now and then I think to myself “IT’S JUST A FUCKING WATCH”... and regret buying it.
Shame about the sloppy paint job on the GMT hand at 07:36 You would expect better to be honest. It's a tiny detail but tiny details count at this level of watch.
cliche but please, review all Rolex Explorer 2, past to present. Thanks!
Gr8 video and yes, those facts were not known by moi, thank you!
Why were old Rolexes so poorly made? That gap between the lugs and end link is humongous.
Manufacturing techniques weren't as good back then, so parts-like the bracelet-can stretch and wear over time. Still, not bad for over half a century old!
ryanhayn it’s not poorly made it’s just regular wear and tear. Google rolex bracelet stretch. It’s from people not cleaning the bracelet. You should be ultra sonic Cleaning the bracelet off the watch at least twice a year. And clean the watch with Vareat and a soft brush every week if it’s a daily watch. My Submariner 14060 has zero stretch. Even my 16234 DJ jubilee has zero stretch. The older Rolex sport watches are hollow links. The newer ones are solid and feel much heavier and better quality.
such amazing quality
Love your content. Keep it up.
please review Bvlgari Daniel Roth Papillon
Which British company made the oyster clasp and jubilee bracelet, and are they still in existance?
I doubt it, on the grounds that we make nothing in the UK any more.
I would not be surprised if one day I see a video from this channel trending . What a classy watch channel 👍
Need some review about Rolex Date
