I thought it was interesting how at the end of the episode, the massacre of over 300,000 people didnt really change anything or anyone at all. Karen became a hate figure, like all those other people before her because of the case. All those people screaming at her seemed to completely forget that hate figures are what lead to the massacre in the first place
Of course, attack hate with hate never worked
I wonder how accurate this is too reality. After big events like ww1 and ww2 I believe people held a different stance against war.
But yet again America didn't learn anything from 9/11 or any school shooting. Maybe the events weren't big enough to have an impact.
I don’t think she was a hate figure but simply the press just being the press. The signs I saw didn’t seem to demonstrate any hate to Karen directly
Humans don't fundamentally change. There have been literally millions of terrible events like that, genocides, mass murders, riots, wars, you name, billions of dead motherfuckers because of our hatred. But we never learn. Because we never change. It's in our nature to assume instead of investigate.
It's a cycle of hate that occurs in reality as well. Look at war-torn countries and wonder why civil wars take so long? It's because "freedom fighters" are on the fight for power to exercise their belief of justice. It's similar in a rather convenient world we live in: humans have the capacity to spread hate on someone and the product of these actions are retaliation.
In my opinion this is the most scariest episode of black mirror because it's very likely that this could happen to our society with all that twitter thing going on
The Cyber bees exist . Not sure if they are in testing mode right now.
A lot of episodes seems like predictions, but Charlie and other others writers are probably just more aware of current developments than other people. 'Nosedive' was considered a prediction by some, but it was public record some time before. Plus other predictions are more like extrapolations of current trends. It's like saying 'Lawnmower Man' is a prediction of VR when the idea of strapping a TV screen to your face probably was an idea soon after TV became popular.
It's not likely at all.
ECTorres it already is.
Think Covington.
I completely agree. Minus the bee drones, this is an eerie representation of "Twitter justice", where presumption of guilt replaces presumption of innocence, and people prefer black-and-white, hero-and-villain narratives to gray reality. The Waldo Moment is also very scary in its own way.
Hated In the Nation is my favourite episode but genuinely is starting to resemble Twitter'a "cancel culture" (as much as its not murdering people) which is super worrying
Niamh Corry I saw a video saying it was the worst and I watched it and loved it!! Very foreseeable
Niamh Corry yep
To be fair, most of the people in cancel culture would wish death upon those they don't like if they thought they could get away with it.

I think a common theme of nearly all Black Mirror esipodes is heavy-handed punishment that is way worse than the actual crime.

I love that bees were used to specifically represent the mob, since the people spewing hate acted within a hive mind. Clever writing.
Teacher of little kids wish death to someone. "It´s just a game!" I don´t want her around any kids or adults.
Martina Skupin I bet if the wheelchair woman did it in front of her students and saw the trauma they’ve endured she’d be singing a different tune
Yeh. It unnerved me that she was a teacher of little children.
@0ddMonk3y Of course it is a fictional show. Even films and books make off real-life events say "inspired by" if it is not a flat out documentary. However, part of the recurring theme of Black Mirror is the lack of accountability persons have when they're behind a screen. For example, you'd less likely call me dense to my face. If you would easily do that to my face, then we could have rather interesting conversations.
@@tiffanypersaud3518 lol fictional, have you seen america. Those shit are worse than fiction, you could kill someone career because of nothing but mob.
Okay, but how often do people online resort to that type of speech? Everyday ordinary people. People who spout it like it’s nothing and don’t think about it at all. In that case, there are many, many people who shouldn’t be around anyone. Not saying it’s okay for them to say it, just kinda surprised you’re making the teacher sound unique in speaking like that.

It’s actually funny because while me and my brother watched this I asked who he’d use the hashtag for, he didn’t say anything. I told him who I’d pick, in fact I had a line up of people. Once we finished the episode I realized how I’d be dead if something like this ever happened. Really holds a mirror up to your face.
well, the show is literally called "Black Mirror" for a reason.
Tbh, I'd probably use the hashtag just to get out of this world.
Why would you ever wish death on another human being?
@@GameZero2 Because like the society portrayed in this episode, it's easy to do horrible things when you believe there won't be any self-harmful consequences from it. I'm sure if the people in this episode knew that using in the hashtag would result in their own deaths, they wouldn't have even entertained the notion in the first place.
I’ve seen this episode listed as the worst of the series in a poll. Perhaps it’s because it reminds people of their actual mob-minded nature.
This is my favorite episode of Black Mirror. It depicts a mistery to be solved, it raises very delicate topics quite pertinent to our times, it has intrigue and tension... It keeps you on the edge of your seat.

Everyone has their opinion. Although I agree, one of my favourite episodes.
its certainly too controversial for people to love
That must have been an exclusive poll that only arseholes are allowed to be a part of.
This is a superb episode!
To be honest, I didn't like this episode. Not because of the whole theme it tackled, I just think it's not a well-told story. Some of the elements seemed mismatched, Karin is pretty useless for the entire case and she's honestly not an interesting or likeable character to follow. Also, it honestly didn't feel like a good unfolding mystery, progress came in weird spurts and half the time it wasn't because of any good detective work, it was just sort of handed to them conveniently. I guess I'm glad you found it tense because I couldn't find the tension.
One detail you didn't put enough emphasis on is facial recognition. It ties to everyone and how the whole system works.
The fact that he shaved his head and changed his appearance is tied to the how bees use facial recognition, the same way humans would use facial recognition to recognize one another. It's also why his twitter accounts had bees as the avatars.
I think it's also cool noting how when she goes after the guy at the end, she is dressed in a shirt with bee stripes.
Man there's a lot going on with this, reminds me of the ed edd n eddy ending explained video comment section...

I think what's really fucked up is the fact that people were so quick to jump on the hashtag and wish death upon someone even when their actions weren't deserving of it. It's incredibly telling when people have no issue with making death threats and telling others to kill themselves.
This episode had me completely shook. Its an actual movie running 90 minutes long. I love the main character, I remember her when she was in Boardwalk Empire. She's a great actress. I just discovered Black Mirror and I'm loving it. Wow. Such a good series.
What’s her name?
Im so mad that Shaun Li was the one who decided to deactivate the bees that lead to the deaths but he and the govt arent even accountable afterwards. Had they listen to Karen, they could have saved those lives. Maybe it's a nod to Gov't being out of touch and making all these major decisions that affect people without them knowing.
It’s his fault
The two detectives should have their own crime drama
Garret's goal was to change human nature by killing off "the swarm."
@Mariivoire he didn't physically carry out the murders, he didn't even know who was going to die until the swarmers "voted" and the MACHINE did it. I think you are wrong those people didn't just use their words they didn't use their brains. also he never participated in the voting so he wasen't killed by the swarm. he didn't he left others to do it. He(bad guy) was very malicious he gave the gun away so other people pull the trigger. my question is out of all possible candidates who was the queen of the swarm?
J White- I’m gonna bet there were more than 3 or 4 casualties, you gotta think about these people’s families and also the possibility of driving accidents doctors performing surgery etc. what he did probably killed a lot more than what he wanted.
Yet he created another hive, the people on the ending scene
Honestly, as backwards as it is he succeeded in that and a lot of bad people in society were "taken care of." Call it natural selection if you will. Obviously I wouldn't do it myself 😆 but he had like 20% good reasoning
Charles Lutwidge Dodgson if he hadn’t created the system those people wouldn’t have died like that, so he defo holds a considerable amount of responsibility
I feel like no-one talks about the fact that OVER 300000 PEOPLE DIED

Thought the same
Am I the only one wondering throughout the whole episode why didn’t they just cover their faces (ears , nose ,mouth and eyes ) ....an easier solution was to wear a hazmat suit instead of tryna secure the potential victims in a large house. Lastly they should’ve at least worn a mask to buy them more time since the bees used facial recognition ..
That’s what I thought but I guess it makes it less entertaining
Or maybe just ban the hashtag lol
Enough bees would've been able to break through a hazmat suit. I do agree with you on the last point though
@@nah_. or cover your face. they are programmed for face recognition. they cant kill you if they dont know who you are.
They didn't know when they were going to be attacked. You can't constantly wear a hazmat suit.
Garret didn't really get away because Blue found him at the end of the episode
True, but there are theories that she was working with him the whole time. I can’t remember the pieces of evidence to support it but I do remember it being pretty convincing, I just don’t want to look it up right now lol.
@@logan3917 that doesn't make any sense because Blu text "got him" to the cop lady so she's obviously still working with her.
Brady Neal That’s a cover. Blue told her that she would catch him, then says got him to make her think she caught him, when in reality, she’s actually working with him.
@@wogarage point
A simple sound of a gunshot as the camera panned up would have been the perfect cap to that episode.
You missed the chance to point out the irony of both the bees and social media were created with good intentions but a small group of people chose to use it as a weapon which affected a larger group. My problem with the episode is the way the media was shown to handle it, there is no way they could tell the truth and referring to them as victims. They are victims of their own choices, like you said even after knowing the results of posting that the numbers of people doing it skyrocketed and were any of those people even considered being held responsible, not in the slightest. After their deaths people only wanted a scapegoat, one person they could lay all the blame on instead of placing it on the people who posted the deathto post knowing it would kill someone. I would love to see a sequel to this to find out what if any change in society happened because of this.
sheeeeesh
Probably no change. Humans have a tendency to pass on blame even after facing their own consequences. The common response is “well I would never be like that,” which only leads to a repeat of what happened. You would need society to become completely honest about itself. But being honest means acknowledging that everyone misses the mark, and no one wants to be caught as the worst person. It’s almost like humanity is evil and, I don’t know, needs a Savior or something.
The point is that millions used the hashtag DeathTo even when they knew the person with the most votes would die a horrible death. Yes, the bees were hijacked by criminals, but this is about the mob mentality and cruel nature of mobs.
I really thought that they would start a hashtag with the name of the man who hacked the bees so they would kill him and ends everything but i guess that would ruin the dramatic end
The government agent who hastily and in error executed the kill signal on the swarm voided that strategy.
@@dondragmer2412 also even after his death, the program would still probably be forced to shut down, and all the people + more would die either way.

One thing I find interesting is whether the people who said "stop using the # death to" also got done in by the bees at the end. Its an interesting question regarding whether Garret had the nuance he wanted of others

Another interesting thing about this episode (that is one of my favorites!) is that the government didn't really make a strong effort to stop the killings until one of their own, the chancellor, began to be targeted. It's kind of twisted because imagine how many more killings could have happened if people simply continued to target writers, celebrities, or any non-government individuals.

as much as i love this episode, watching it a second time made me realize a huge plot hole: if the bees recognise who to attack because of facial recognition, shouldnt they just...cover their faces
I also wondered why no one built an emp?
The bees also traced them through their phone address
because they didn’t know that it was facial recognition at that point because the man that worked for the government never told them that the bees use facial recognition.
Yes, watching the episode it was obvious the bees were likely using facial recognition, I was surprised it took them so long to come to that conclusion. I just wanted the characters to cover their faces. When they walked Clara out of her home they had her face on full display for the bees - it was very irresponsible and ultimately lead to her death.
Facts
It’s crazy how easy for me to understand this episode, even before i watched this video. Meaning that this episode metaphorically explain about our current situation as internet/social media users.
It’s just crazy.
1. How tweeting #deathto in real life could/oftentimes caused the said person to commit suicide after receiving soo many death wishes (but this episode potrait it differently)
2. How people who tweeted #deathto oftentimes don’t even realize how much impacts they had to someone’s life, and considered their tweets as “jokes” or “they don’t even really mean it” but it actually does contribute to someone’s death.
3. How people who tweeted #deathto are actually just killing themselves from the inside with all of the hatred and oftentimes those who write hate comments are the miserable with their lives and currently hating themselves, but choose to direct their self hatred to other people on the internet.
4. It is impossible to stop hatred. It’s everywhere, everyone has it, everybody hates certain things, and no matter how hard anyone try to stop hatred, it’ll always be there. Even about the smallest and most unimportant things.
5. Justice is not the same for everyone. These 300k people tweeted #deathto to bring justice for people who got hurt by these infamous people’s action. Thinking that they brought justice to those people. Garret killed those 300k people to bring justice for people who got death wishes, And at the end, those people protesting to bring justice for 300k dead people, by also HATING on the police force.
It’s a never ending circle. And it’s crazy that us human have so much hatred inside us.

i LOVED the ending to this. it was a complete shock to me, but made the most perfect sense. it was so sad and unfortunate, but it was like the ultimate revenge on the public for being so heartless and ignorant, even though they were really no worse than the people they targeted. they were just products of their effed up society.

This is by far my favorite episode. I enjoyed every second of it. I don't think they'll be able to make another episode that tops it.
I just watched this episode last night and I'm glad for this explanation. I watch Black Mirror episodes because of their view of technology. There seems to be a lesson inside each episode and I can appreciate that.
I love your voice ! Its very calming, I listen to your videos to help me sleep! Very comforting!
I have liked and learned something from every video of yours I've watched, bravo bro👏
this episode was really good. and you can see how despite all the murders, society didn’t even grasp the reason why it occurred in the first place, as they just resort to hating mindlessly again.
14:09 it also says “Skillane appeal thrown out of court”, i.e. referring to Victoria Skillane from the White Bear episode and how a group of people must have felt sorry for her and tried to get the continued suffering to end, but ultimately failed
I love your Voice!!! It's the reason I stayed after coming across your videos keep up the great work. How about try a timeline video? Putting the episodes in chronological order. Or at least in your opinion. Lol
your voice is fine . its quite pleasant actually . also love black mirror and just watched this episode and men against fire had me in tears .amazing stuff !
Thank you so much!
Please do an analysis for the episode 'Nosedive'! Your channel is great :)
You missed the Easter Egg where it says “US military launches Mass” on the TV which is referring to “Men against fire”
Mannnn. I loved your take on this. Well done
I love your voice. And your explanation/analysis videos are absolutely awesome. You are a gemstone in the clickbaity CZcams world ❤️
Thank you so much, that's really awesome to hear!
I hope you enjoy surfing instead
your voice is actually great, especially for these videos.👌great explanations 🤩
I just bumped into your channel yesterday, have been binge-watching your videos. One of the reasons is you have a really attractive voice 👍
It’s ironic that “no filter” gets “real” behind a screen. I’ve used “say it to my face” before to cyberbullies, even folks I know off the screen. 90% of the time, they cannot say it to my face. And if they do, we can actually have more of a conversation or proper exchange.
This episode was longer and I even liked that about it. I was hooked to each minute of it. And I love your vids. After watching the episodes, I come here. Your depth of analysis and even sharing about the creator’s inspiration shows how much work you put into each vid. And I appreciate that.
The comments I receive sharing my opinions and thoughts on social media, even hate comments, keep me from even doing things like making a channel myself. And that’s sad. Imagine how many people with talent are held back like that? It’s easy to say “not to care about what others think” when it is so easy to misconstrue value to the number of likes.
I know someone probably pointed this out already but I didn’t realize how much the color blue was in this episode until I gave it another watch. The lights from the police cars in the beginning, Blue’s apartment condo, the children’s school uniform, the computer tabs as well. It’s obvious to me now but I guess that was black mirror’s subtle way of telling you that the character Blue is essentially the main focus of this episode as well as the fact that she caught the hacker at the end.
You have a great voice man. Don’t listen to whoever says otherwise, they’re just trying to find a way to hurt you.
You're so cute and your analysis are great to watch! I thought the episodes were a bit straightforward in a good way, heavy handed punishment being worse than the crime itself, but I still rly enjoyed your deep dives bc they are like a thorough recap and food for thought which is always nice n.n I was a black mirror fan right away mostly because of how every episode made you think it out. Loved that!
I love your voice. I hope you’re safe during any kinds of water sports you absolute legend.
I think that's the beauty of the ending though. There's multiple theories on how it ends.
Blue caught him and they get justice.
Blue was working with him the whole time.
Or the Bee guy knew he was being followed by Blue and was once again, one step ahead.
I don't think Blue working with him the whole time is a legit theory, there was no evidence at all to back that up. Speculation really gets out of hand sometimes.
Blue couldn't be working with him, if she was, she never would have contacted Karen saying that she got him
@@supersani21 What if both Blue and Karen were working with him. And Karen's job was to cover up the case. I mean the bee guy was watching her trial and immediately left after it ended and didn't wait to see the other guy's trial
@@jimmiemunyi that's a stupid theory. Karin literally didn't even know about the bees until later on in the episode and Blue showed no signs of working with Garrett.
I'm never quick to "cancel" problematic people like James Charles is bc I think of this episode n it terrifies me
James charles isn't even THAT problematic
Edit: Well...
lapissed Ikr, his explanation video shut everyones arguments down but they still ignored him
He may be annoying to some people but idk why soo many people hate him. Moreover if you hate someone ignore them why give more attention to them
He's not problematic at all
The fact that James admitted that he was thinking about doing it in because of how bad it was shocked me
Dude I love all your explanation videos! They're insightful and help me love a show I almost just wrote off. The 1st episode I saw was Archangel. I was turned off because it seemed like they took an hour to say what could have been said in 30 mins. I restarted the series from day one, felt I needed a guide & you popped up. I know being a CZcamsr takes a lot of time & effort and I appreciate it. Please don't let negative comments from cowards haunt you. Because of you I LOVE this show and tell everyone I talk to about it & your channel. I am subscribed & am forever hitting that like button!
Gives a whole new definition to the term “hive mind”
