Hi Kim (and Camera Guy) - so excited to see you try this method! I have limited space in my backyard garden and I converted to this type of method 4-5 years ago. I am a total fan. It allows me to plant more densely and, in doing so, grow way more varieties. If I may offer a few added tips? Always try to run your string under a sunleaf branch instead of a fruit cluster. The leaf branch is stronger and will offer more support overall. Also - don't be afraid to run additional string/twine/cord from above in case the tomato plant decides to provide a double or even triple stem (not from a sucker). You might not run into this - but I grow a lot of heirlooms that seem to do this naturally. I hope you end up loving this as much as I do. Great vid - thank you!
Wow, this is fabulous insight! Thank you!!! SO HELPFUL, CeeCee ---I will keep you posted via the channel videos! CK
Hi Kim. I'm trying the method you used to build a tall trellis. You need to get yourself some tomato clips though. They hold the string in place and no wrapping, much simpler and cleaner. Wishing us both luck. I have cattle panels too that I'm still going to use for my heavier toms, Dr. Wyches get huge and all my determinates. I'll wave them in the panel. I also follow a recipe from an older gentleman who grows huge award winning toms showed . 1 cup each diatomaceous earth, gypsum, fish bone meal, azamite, kelp, oyster flour and Greensand. Put compost up around plants and broadcast the rest of stuff. Of course a type of manure I use chicken and water in with a water soluble 2-2-2. Watch them go nuts!!
GREAT advice here, Colleen, espesh' the tomato clips. I'll take a look at that for sure. GREAT ADVICE here, THANK YOU!!! CaliKim
I don't have a yard so don't think ill be doing this, but I love how you try different ways to grow. You left out 1 ingredient = a trusted garden dog named Mac.đ
Awwwww, Teriđ
Oh I'm so excited that you're doing this. After researching and watching various videos like James Prigioni, I decided to do the same. I got lucky and found somebody that was giving away a bunch of bamboo . They are absolutely huge pieces. I'm sooo happy with them. Anyways I built mine the same way as you but used The bamboo and large zip ties. I have a 3x6 raised bed. I put 4 in determinate tomatoes across the back, I will be stringing those up. I also have indeterminate tomatoes positioned at the front of the bed. I also have a 4x8 raised bed. I did double rows. 5 tomatoes across the back and 4 across the front staggered. I built a double stringed trellis for that one. Also have a row of determinate tomatoes across the front. I added onions, marigolds and basil in both of them.
Hi Irene - so excited you're "stringing" tomatoes along with me! You're method sounds perfect for your space - you really hit the jackpot with the bamboo - so sturdy. I'm going to build another one this weekend. Can't wait to hear how yours grow - keep me posted. Thanks for watching!
I will keep you updated. Wish I knew how to send you some picturesđ€·ââïž

This is so nice, Kim!! I'm emptying a bed. I had cauliflower in it. All of those tomatoes that I have this will be amazing to try. Have you heard of Florida weave? I like yours. I can't wait to build it. Thanks again!! Take care!
No, no, I have not heard of that!
This is definitely in my plans for next year. I must say that I LOVE the music used for this video. So relaxing!
Nice, Julie, thanks!! Go for it , next year! CK
Iâm so excited to see another video on this trellis method. Iâve seen some people do it in greenhouses but wondering how I can do it without a greenhouse. My tomatoes get crazy by the midseason so looking forward to trying this this year!
Coming soon! I am too honestly! I think this is really going to be fun. Make sure you subscribe so you donât miss any of the posts. Thank you so much for watching a commenting, CaliKim
Good work Kim!! Appreciate all your help and energy..
You are so welcome, I appreciate your comment and hope that are subscribing! CaliKim
@@CaliKim29 Thank you! Im so cal too so you've helped me understand alot to build with and also using Gary's input. You both have helped me build a garden all around my house. Thank you!
Another great video! I first saw this method on Brian Lowellâs channel, Next Level Gardening, (who I found through one of your videos). Alan helped me build a similar trellis and it really works well for me. I am glad you are giving it a try!
Awesome, thank you! Yes, us too at Brian's. Good on Alan for helping you with the build, too. This should be fun! CK
Glad to know you can use a mallet to bang in t-posts! I really didnât want to buy a driver but was starting to think I had to. Thanks for showing that!
The ground was soft, CameraGuy had the heavy steel mallet on stand by!! Are you thinking about trying this, too?! CaliKim Thank you for subbing and I hope you are enjoying, learning from the content! Thank you!!
@@CaliKim29 I live in Florida and have super sandy soil, so I think it will be possible here. And I have friends and family with big muscles đđ definitely gonna try it now!
What a GREAT response!! Consider them VOLUNTERRED. Love it! CaliKim
Hi Kim I love the way your growing your tomato plants Iam growing my tomato plants the same way
Thanks, Jackie, let's grow them together. I've never done this...should be interesting. CK
I wish I could make that trellis, yet It would've fit on my patio. Kim, I was told not to use a lot of fish fertilizer because it contains a lot of salt.
Hi Esther - it's a stunner, and you could easily customize the size for your patio. For containers, I'd recommend attaching it it to something solid, like a patio railing on either side of several containers, or a Smart Pot raised bed. Let me know if you try it!
As far as fish fert goes, I've used it for years with great results. Generally, I use it at the beginning of the growing season to help the plants take off then again after a heavy pruning to encourage new growth. The brand I use is Alaksa, available at most garden centers or online. A link is in our last tomato video. Thanks for stopping by, always great to read your comments and see you on the Monday livestream!
I have used this method for about three years and have failed every year. Just for a change I am going back to the older method of using a very sturdy tomato cage and see what happens. I think the heat we have here really affects the tomatoâs on the string method. We shall see based on what happens this year.
Keep me posted. I think your plan is a good one. You'all have a whole different heat going on up there! CK
Iâm debating trying this. I have 4 8â T-posts in ground and in an row already for a âFlorida Weaveâ set up. I put 3 tomatoes in between each set for 9 total. It wouldnât be hard to convert it to this. I can probably fit even more this way. Iâll stick with Florida Weave this year as I donât like heavy pruning. Iâll prune a lot to start to keep the bottom open, but then Iâll just let it go mostly. Florida Weave is constant work weaving the twine in between all the tomatoes though.
That's ok, if things are work great in your garden right now, as is....leave it be!! But do follow along, I think it's going to be fun! Thank you for watching/commenting. CaliKim
Great information. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful! Are you going to build one? It would be fun to chat about how our tomatoes grow this summer!
@@CaliKim29 I am considering building a trellis since I will be growing an indeterminate tomato. I enjoy your videos-they are so educational.
I recognize you fy7cp9, etc.... thank you for your comments, alwasy so positive and encouraging me . Thank you. Go for the trellis is your time allows! If not now, perhaps down the road - CaliKim
I want to see how yours do this season.
So do I. LOL!!!! Should be interesting, Todd. Thanks for subscribing this past year! CaliKim
How to keep bug out of my raised garden bed
Good kim do u still use Epsom salt and pit fish in the ground for tomatoes and I just got my fish fertilizer for my peppers I cant went to use itâ€
Hey Keith - always great to see you here! Yes, I use Epsom Salts, check out our recent pepper video for more info. LOL that fish in my giant tomato planting hole was fun - but lately I've stuck to fish emulsion, as the plant can immediately uptake the nutrients. Are you going to try the tomato string trellis? Good luck with your peppers, keep me posted and thanks for watching!
I did the exact same thing but instead of wood I used pvc with t-posts.
That's awesome, Becky!! How's it going? I am open for suggestions! Kim
â@CaliKim29 I did something similar with t-posts, a metal conduit pipe for across the top, and pvc elbows to connect them. Mine isn't as tall since it was for sweet peas over spring with net, and afterwards some determinate tomatoes. I would like to try the tall version though. Looks easy, and attractive.
@@CaliKim29 my favorite part is that itâs not a permanent structure. I can use it in another location for pole beans, or luffa.
Also my favorite part of yours is that you didnât go buy expensive materials. You could have bought the best or most attractive trellis on the market but you used what nature gave you. đż
Brilliant, great idea (makes total sense). Yah, try the tall when you have time! CK
Good point, at the structure being NOT permanent, Becky. I do try to do things as low cost and simple, as possible. Thank you (always) you are such and encouragement to me, Becky. Kim
Letâs goooo!!!!! (Iâll be back after watching)â€
Perfect timing because I finished my platform today, and now I just need to add piece of wood going across the top with a support beam in the middle (8 foot wide section).
Original plan was polypropylene netting because itâs easy, then changed to chicken wire because I had extra⊠but I keep seeing this style trellis and might change plans again đđđđđ
Do you think this would be viable method for cucumbers and melons too?
Also, James Prigioni had an interesting idea to add to this style, where he releases tension on the string when the plant gets to the top (at least thatâs what I believe he said and sorry to mention another channel) So easy to get caught up in info overload đâ€â€â€â€â€
Hey McGritty! I love it when the timing works out like this! The top with support beam is a great idea too, so many ways to do this method. I considered that as well, but decided to keep it simple with my first build and then adjust if needed with the next one. Cucs and melons climb more naturally than tomatoes, their tendrils grab, but this method will work for them as well. I also saw James Prigioni's (lol, no worries) release method, but again decided against it as I wanted to use mostly re-purposed materials and spend as little as possible. Make sure to let me know how it goes and good luck! Cheers to a great tomato season!
â ââ @@CaliKim29Hmm, simplicity is a beautiful thing. Maybe Iâll just do the poly netting this year because itâs probably the most simplistic for me and then I can focus my energy on other things in the garden. My chicken wire has been sitting outside and has some unpleasant spots on it, not to mention I donât like the feel of it⊠And then Iâll keep this style trellis in mind if I run out of space because itâs simple to set up too
â€â€â€â€â€
Sounds wonderful...I want to come over!!! LOL
No I planted my peppers a few weeks ago now I'm going to use fish fertilizer I'm the ground every 3 weeks to how big and tall my peppers plants get
Be careful you don't get too much salt in your dirt from fish fertilizer.
