Love your videos ! I am a first year tomato planter - I am trying smart pots. I have them on a cement slab front porch .. should I put something under them ?
If you are hand watering, put, you a drip tray underneath the SmartPot because it will wick back up into the soil! Thank you for the nice words, too! So let's just start there. It wouldnt hurt for you to watch my video from last week called "watering in containers"....that will give you a lot of info! Thank you again, and I hope that you've subscribed...CaliKim
Thanks for the great info, Kim! I want to start growing in pots (I am a new gardener) but I am confused about fertilizers. I noticed you are using high nitrogen (5-1-1 in the fish fertilizer) in your fertilizers. I thought that higher nitrogen produces leaves, not fruits. I would like to know what NPK fertilizer I can use in tomatoes vs lettuce and herbs.
You are correct, too. That is the mix that I like to use.
Here is a good guideline for you -
Tomatoes require higher levels of phosphorus and potassium, especially during flowering and fruiting stages. Use a fertilizer with an NPK ratio of 5-10-10 or 10-10-10 .
Lettuce primarily requires nitrogen to support the growth of its leaves. Choose a fertilizer with a higher nitrogen content, 10-5-5 or even higher, like 15-5-5.
Herbs generally benefit from balanced fertilizers: nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. Look for an NPK ratio of around 10-10-10 or slightly lower in nitrogen, such as 7-5-5. Remember to follow the instructions on the packaging! Hope this helps, Joseph. Thank you for following along after all these years! CK
@@CaliKim29 Thank you for clearing this up for me!
Great info about tomato tips and care. I love grow bags too. This year, I am growing 11 different varieties of indeterminate tomatoes. I bought 10-gallon potato grow bags for my tomato plants. These grow bags are much taller than most 10-gallon grow bags. They are 16" tall and provide more room for a larger root system. Also, I use heavy duty plant saucers by Hydrofarm under my grow bags to capture the water drainage. Why waste that good nutritional water? Grow bags will wick up that nutrient rich water from the bottom back into the potting mix. Happy gardening.
You are all over it!! Great job out there, Brichter!!! LOVE the saucer idea, too!!! Happy gardening to you, as well!! Please tell me you've subscribed. Love your energy!! CK
@@CaliKim29 Yes, I am as subscriber and have been for about 2 years. I enjoy your videos.
Fantastic! And thank you! (I have no way of telling unless the account owner chooses to show it! Thank you very much!!! ). Kim
Hello from Newbury Park! Are you leaving your tomatoes out over night yet?
Hellooooo NP !! Yes, I am, however, I am leaving a bucket over it due to the cold overnight temps still, Cynthia. Thanks for watching - CK
Hey can we use green leaves from a tree as mulch
Yes, you can use green leaves from a tree as mulch. In fact, using leaves as mulch is a common and effective practice in gardening and landscaping.
Make sure they are free from diseases or pests.AVOID using leaves from trees that have been treated with pesticides or herbicides. let me know how it goes, Johnny! CK
@@CaliKim29 thanks 🙏
Why do you use so much nitrogen? Do you use lots early in while it’s vegging, then cut out most of the nitrogen and give it more P and K while it’s flowering and fruiting?
So they get a lot of green growth at the beginning and a strong leafy growth. Once they bloom I back off on the Nitrogen. Does that help? Thank you Tom and for watching ! So sorry for my delay!!
@@CaliKim29Ok, yes. That makes sense. Thank you
There's no way I can afford vermiculite for large containers. Am I sourcing it from the wrong places?
it’s probably one of the more costly parts of soil amendment, but as a canadian i was able to get a 4 cubic foot bale for $44. it goes very far!
