I never got into chance’s music, but as a Chicagoan and someone who was a CPS student during his 2013ish come up, he gave so much money to Chicago public schools. This was during a time when our old shitty mayor closed 33 schools and there was major overcrowding. The teachers went on strike and chance gave tons of money to support CPS, the teachers and the students. Even my parents who never listened to chance or would’ve known who he was respected him bc it appeared he was doing more for CPS than the city. So, I’ll always like and respect him for coming to the aid of Chicago students when things were seemingly at their worst
Coloring book was lightning in a bottle, the exact right balance between commercial viability and chances artistic roots, to be able to cross over and dominate the pop world without alienating his burgeoning cult fanbase. I think the fact he got the balance so perfect is why he blew up so big and had a meteoric rise in the eyes of casuals. Its truly a one of one listening experience that you just had to be there for. But for him to pull it off twice with big day would be a miracle. And he went about it as if he was frank ocean releasing a followup to blonde. No singles, barely any promo, just assuming his fanbase and the culture would eat it up cause he's him.

My partner and I listened to Acidrap a lot after it came out, and I knew he had a lot of potential even if the project wasn't perfect. Subsequent singles had me totally turned off. There is something to be said about Acidrap coming out basically at the peak of festival culture too. Really tapped into a zeitgeist.

Acid Rap is one of my fav albums of all time. Surf is amazing. Coloring book did nothing much for me tbh. I really only like juke jam 😅 I kinda saw the writing on the wall. When The Big Day came out I only liked the song with Megan the stallion. He really lost his voice imo. He was so clear with his message with the mixtapes so the sudden switch just turned me off. I’m hoping he gets back to his roots
Worked at a dealership in Cicero Illinois years ago. Our dealership lot was strictly used for customer parking and we had a shuttle to take employees to there vehicles in a gated employee parking lot 3-5 minutes away. I saw chance the rapper while on this shuttle at a red light making a left. I tell the drive to pull over( ive known this man for the pass 2 years) i get out the shuttle and verbatim say "hey chance my girlfriend is a huge huge fan of yours can i get you to sign my hat" it had the Chicago cubs C on it and i explained i wanted to give the hat to her. 2 of his security came up and said no lol. I asked chance is that how he treats his long time acid rap enthusiasts bro deadass kept walking away no acknowledgement. Really rubbed me the wrong way.
I feel a lot of the Chance backlash was just hating, his raps did not take a HUGE decline but he was memefied and that was it. Its disingenuous to pretend his quality took a huge decline without acknowledging the hive-mind type way the internet turned on him,
Alright, I put off watching this one because--and trust me--I don't like bringing it up, but I went to high school with the guy. His rise baffled me and my friends cuz we all thought he was annoying af. So when reception to "The Big Day" stalled his career, ngl the hater in me rejoiced a little. But he's given back to Chicago with donations, and it's unfair to judge someone for who they were as a teenager. I still will never listen to his music because I'm way too insecure and jealous of his success lol, but I hope things turn around for him.

His rise baffled me and my friends cuz we all thought he was annoying af. So when reception to "The Big Day" stalled his career, ngl the hater in me rejoiced a little. But he's given back to Chicago with donations, and it's unfair to judge someone for who they were as a teenager. I still will never listen to his music because I'm way too insecure and jealous of his success lol, but I hope things turn around for him.
