- On a cold Oregon morning, I have for the first time been able to hand feed a hummingbird. This is a male Anna's Hummingbird. They winter over here in Oregon. I take in the feeders at night when the temperature dips below 30 degrees. In the morning at first light, they regulars are buzzing and chirping at me when I come outdoors to rehang the feeders. So, I decided to try using a small hand held feeder that my wife bought me for Christmas.
so cute
Congratulations! I bought one of those too, but haven’t tried hand-feeding yet. Thank you for posting.😀
Mike, that is incredible! I can't believe the trust this little creature had for you. I'm just seeing this video now (Jan 24, 2016)....but I gotta ask...have you been able to hand feed these little birds again? Would love to see more of these videos.
+Sylvia Catalano If you bring in the feeders as to wash and refill them, be in no hurry. If you do this on cold mornings, especially, and early, they are very hungry and more likely to approach you. Try starting out just standing and holding the feeder with an outstretched arm. Be patient. They may buzz around you and be hesitant at first, but eventually, they will associate you with food and approach and light onto the feeder. From there it is a progression to have them come to a hand held small feeder. Good luck. Be patient.
Thanks for the tips! I will definitely be trying this out! :)
It will be a source of great pleasure to you!
