Hiking the Robert Louis Stevenson Trail
zhlédnutí 6KPřed 6 lety
In April and May of 2018, with my good friend Greg Chase, we hiked Le Chemin de Robert Louis Stevenson, designated the GR70, in the mountains of southern France. The route follows or recreates the path that author Robert Louis Stevenson took in the fall of 1878 when he bought a donkey, named it Modestine, and hiked through the Velay, Gevaudan, and Cevennes mountains...a 150 mile journey. He ret...
Feeding the Gray Jays in Winter

When I am out XC skiing, I'll take a lunch break and am often surrounded by gray jays looking for handouts. You'll see here that they are so hungry they can easily be hand fed.

Handfeeding a Hummingbird
zhlédnutí 3,5KPřed 9 lety
On a cold Oregon morning, I have for the first time been able to hand feed a hummingbird. This is a male Anna's Hummingbird. They winter over here in Oregon. I take in the feeders at night when the temperature dips below 30 degrees. In the morning at first light, they regulars are buzzing and chirping at me when I come outdoors to rehang the feeders. So, I decided to try using a small hand held...
Steve Hall Watercolor Demonstration
zhlédnutí 55KPřed 9 lety
This video was filmed in October, 2014, at the studio of Steve Hall who lives near Bradford on Avon, in the UK. He was kind enough to give me this bit of instruction and allow filming it, then publishing. You can see his technique which is reminiscent of the style of the late Edward Wesson. Steve has written two books on Wesson and teaches workshops frequently throughout the year. His website i...
Ron Ranson Lesson 3 Demos
zhlédnutí 166KPřed 9 lety
The English author and artist Ron Ranson was kind enough to allow me to film a private lesson with him in February 2013, just after his 88th birthday! He demonstrates the use of the hake brush that he popularized so many years ago.

During this winter story, especially, I put a birdseed mix on the window sill of my studio/shop. It doesn't take more than a few seconds until the birds show up for their feast. They have me trained!

Wow, apart of me wanted to say, wait….how did he do that….but then I remember, it’s Ron Ranson. Just love how beautiful and just freeing his artwork is. ❤❤❤
I love doing this!
Fantastic video!! I would love to make that trek. Thank you kindly.
Wonderful document of a beautiful ‘randonnée’. Merci! Where did you go next? My wife and I did this walk in 2023 and I’m pondering where in France could match or surpass the GR70 for hospitality and superb stages
I don't know how he did it! Amazing. I (novice) try this and as soon as my colours hit wet paper it's bloom city and looks hideous. How zero green was created in the sky is a mystery.
I walked this route before it had GR status, back in the 1980s, returning a few years later for a second (this time solo) traverse. Wonderful walk, with so many memories. I made it round Paris on the transfer coach between CDG and Orly but my pack did not. One of the pilots put me up at his home, and his wife dropped me at the airport (Le Puy) as her husband returned from Paris with my rucksack. A car and driver took me to Le Monastier, the mayor gave me lunch out of the local treasury fund, and found a Briton to walk the first few kilometres, his return taxi charged to the local treasury. Florac was full on the first trip, so we slept in the open air (I left a few francs on the ground, as did RLS): next night we were given a huge meal for ten francs. At the florist in St Jean du Gard, the assistant noted the Scots accent: she had been an assistante in a school in Dunfermline. So much more.
Thanks so much for sharing your story! It was such a memorable experience for me and my pal.
I taught watercolor painting in my public school art classes to seventh grade students using a library of Ron Ransom videotapes, using only 2" hake brushes, 1" flat brushes, and rigger brushes. Our paints included only a pair of warm and cool reds, blues, and yellows. Ron's books and videos conveyed the essence of watercolor like no other teacher could. My goal was for middle school students to be able to relate to watercolor artists, to recognize watercolor paintings, and to feel competent with a simple array of art brushes, paper, and paints. I will never forget Ron Ransom's mastery of virgin washes punctuated with calligraphic details.
Thankyou for posting this!
Most welcome. Ron became a dear friend. I was fortunate to have known him in his final years. He was an important watercolor teacher who gave many the encouragement to "give it a go".
Beautiful paintings from a very talented artist and teacher.
I am allergic to most nuts but 3.
Beautiful to watch! Thank you for sharing this special trail!
it exceeded my expectations. A great trip.
EXCELLENT!!!!!!!!!!
I was very fortunate to get to know Ron at his home near Lidney in the UK It was he that introduced me to loose impressionist watercolour A wonderful man with a fabulous sense of humour I traveled to Lipsi with him in the Greek Islands in 2004 and had a great 10 days painting in his and Darlis company A sad passing will always remember him with great affection
Darlis just passed away in December. Yes, you have good memories as do i.
You can truly tell by his confience with the brush that Ron Ranson was a master.
Thank you!
I have some of his books ... 2nd hand ! What a pleasure to watch the master.
do you know how patronising you sound when you talk to him like hes dribbling food down the front of his bib?
Interesting comment. My narration was intended to bring out information to help me understand what he was doing and why....for my learning purposes. It was later that I posted this on YT. Ron was quite with it when I made this video and he graciously allowed me to film him, even though there are many videos he made still available for purchase.
That's really out of order and wrong. Not patronising in the slightest. Just prodding for info which the viewers will have appreciated.
beautiful vignette
Lovely demos, thanks for sharing.. Very Sad to hear of his demise.. May God bless his soul...
I recently had the blessing of buying a bundle of 5 of Rons books. I have learnt more about how watercolour through his advise than any course. The books are out of print now so I feel very lucky as my watercolour skills have vastly improved since following Rons advise and the books are a joy to read. Ron wrote that his books are completely different to other art books out there that all say the same old things about how to watercolour and the reader comes away learning very little and not improving their skills. So his approach to explain the ‘secrets’ of how to watercolour are that you have to ‘Read’ his explanations rather than the usual ‘follow this lovely study’ which he says is basically copying how that particular artist works, when you should be learning the skills yourself. Wonderful man so logical. Thank you Ron Ranson. My deepest condolences to your family, you are a great loss but you are still Teaching and the best out there! 🌷🎨🖌 Edit: Forgot to mention…I also bought the Ron Ranson Hake brushes and love them.
Nice to hear. Yes, he made major contributions to watercolor by his way of teaching. It gave people the confidence to "give it a go".
@@tmikeporter Yes: My confidence has grown now that I have learnt the ‘real’ skills to watercolour and have had to paint ‘my way’ not copy someone else. It has been a real eye opener because I got so confused trying to teach myself how to paint by following all these different artists ways that I did become ‘blocked’ and wanted to know why I was not getting my own style. As I read Rons books I get out my brushes and paint box painting what Ron advises which is much more affective rather than copying a set of photos and within hours ‘I had it’ and feel like I have come out of shut box! 🙂 for now I can paint what I want and feel freer instead of frustration. You were very blessed to have known Ron and sit by him as he painted. 🌷🎨🖌
Thank you for posting this video. Mr. Ranson lives on with the legacy of his art and talent.
Beautiful!
Cant believe I missed his classes. Found out too late but treasure his tips on painting. He's a one-off..impossible to "imitate". I notice there are references to his wife, Darlis. In his book , she is Audrey?
Steve where did you get your frame to hold the watercolor paper as you paint ?? Thanks
John, to the best of my knowledge he made it out of heavy poster board. That's what I have done for painting with 1/4 and 1/2 sheet sizes. Tape the top edges because they get wet, The back piece can be cardboard or poster board. I use clear shipping tape. I hold the top, watercolor paper and back together with clips when I paint. Works well for me. The paper can expand and contract as it is wet and dries. You might have to adjust the clips.
@@tmikeporter Thanks Mike I will try it and see how it goes. I tape it down to my board at the moment
What's that palette?
The palette or paint box that Steve was holding is handmade of brass by Craig Young in England. He still makes them.
RIP
Thank you so much for your video. I love Ron's painting very much. How old was he when he painted those.
About 85, I'm thinking. He was almost 90 when he died. He still had his wits about him in this video and knew how to stress and demonstrate the principles he'd espoused in his workshops and books. Quite a guy. Lucky me to have known him as I did.
Nice video, shame about the dreadful music, no need for any background music, just plain annoying!
How fortunate you were with him and learning from his years of skill. I loved watching this and appreciate you having shared it with us. He seems a kindhearted gentle soul and his style is an amazing inspiration. Now he paints his journey into the afterlife and I imagine it is absolutely beautiful.
Wonderful demo. Ron was a truly gifted painter.
Just stunning. What a contribution to the art world xxx RIP

Beautiful video and a Beautiful Artist. Thank you.
¡Que hermoso! El artista vive en su obra. Gracias por el video.
This is the first time I have seen this video and all I can say is wow! He demonstrates a beautiful gentle touch and moves color so effortlessly. Thank you for sharing this.
Glad you liked it. And I'm so glad that on that day I asked Ron if I could film him and he agreed. So many have enjoyed it over these years.
Amazing trip well done !
Thank you, Sara. It turned out to be even better to live it than to see it on video.
Mike Porter The dean of Canterbury Cathedral England has been, along with his morning prayers, on CZcams reading from Robert Louis Stevenson‘s book of his travels there. That is The first I’d heard of the area and wanted to pursue more information about it and discovered your video. Are the two of you teachers?
@@sarawoods1450 Uh, not, not teachers, but it was me that has been interested in RLS as an author and a reported family link. I came across the Travels with a Donkey book and then discovered that his trek is now a national trail in France. It's a wonderful hike for anyone in decent physical shape.
The purity of it
Love the interest of his fucked hand
Thank you so much for sharing. I heard about this in a Joe Menza video as I was searching for Mr. Ranson's loose style of painting. Your thoughtful narration and explanations were very helpful. And your respect and humbleness made it a touching tribute to Mr. Ranson.
He was a fine English gentleman, artist and author. I was fortunate to have known him.
Thanks for posting this, it was lovely. Want to walk this one myself not too long from now.
It was a great experience. I'd advise doing the walk about 2 weeks later than we did. May is a good month. Warmer. The flowers are blooming still. And warmer. The Enlightened Traveler was a great tour organizer. Highly recommend them.
Mr Ranson your Art & Spirit live on! thanks to these Videos', your Inspiration will continue to serve Generations to come. Master of the Hake, I will always think of you each time I use one.
so cute
Congratulations! I bought one of those too, but haven’t tried hand-feeding yet. Thank you for posting.😀
We showed this video at her birthday party with 19 total family members in attendance! 4 generations. GG was born on Feb. 20th, 1920, so she turned 95 on 2/20/2020.
Seeing Rons Hands takes me back 50 years to my first Memory of My Grandfather. His hands although showing signs of age moved with Grace and Confidence .No wasted movements or fumbling. Actions speak louder than words and watching Ron Paint is a pleasure. TY
Just finished the book- Travels with a Donkey, thoroughly enjoyed your video
Glad to hear it, Lorrie. The hike is a great experience and I highly recommend it. The Enlightened Traveler was a booking company I do recommend to enhance the experience. I'd recommend an overnight stay at Pont de Montvert if you do it. Nice rest day in an interesting town where the Camisard uprising began. We stayed and ate at the same hotel where RLS did.
