    Always wanted; was never able to afford … until … I was online one day and found a large retailer selling a brand new one that suffered a headstock break in shipping from Gibson. Instead of destroying or sending back, they repaired it and listed it for less than half of retail. I was able to get the brand new experience with all case candy and everything for less than half and the inevitable headstock break had already been taken care of for me. Best deal I have ever found on anything, ever.

    I just saw Jackson Browne and James Taylor in Baltimore last week and even JB had a J-200 on stage for one song. I've never seen him play one before. Maybe he saw the video and took it to heart.

    The SJ-200 is the best acoustic I've ever played and I've played a lot of acoustics. It's actually a comfortable guitar too, its size is deceptive. Jumbos are more comfy than dreads to play. Saying that, its known as the "Quiet Giant" for a reason: it's not low volume obviously but a dreadnought is noticably significantly louder. The SJ-200 has a naturally compressed even sound, which is one of its unique strengths

      @fannyingabout Před 2 lety

      Absolutely correct. I’ve got a Maton Custom Shop Jumbo which is based on the J200 and it’s exactly how you describe. I’m primarily doing songs and it’s an absolute dream having that even almost orchestrated sound behind the voice. But it’s also capable of anything really.

  • @shred5
    @shred5 Před 2 lety +1

    Here's the thing about the SJ-200. You can go play 10 of them and 2 or 3 of them might really blow you away and leave you with a $4500 charge on your credit card, but the others may sound pretty uninspiring and leave you wondering how they want a four figure price tag. That's happened to me multiples times. They never sound the same, but the good ones are exceptional
    I actually own a '76 Guild F-50, which is similar in shape but sounds much more maple in character - bassier, and a cleaner reverb.

  • @rzh3443
    @rzh3443 Před 2 lety +3

    Unfortunately, for me, I SHOULD have owned one. Too old to get my arms around one to play comfortably. I do pick one up at the music store when they have one in stock and they sure are fun fo strum! Maybe with a modern medical miracle….I have noticed the Gibson stock models are much better in quality the last coupe, of years since the management change. Hope they keep it up.

  • @FloppsEB

    so am i the only one who just hears the brand new strings when critically listening? i really wish when people demo'd acoustics, especially for tonality, they would NOT put fresh strings on, because now i'm judging the strings, i'm hearing absurd amounts of ~4.2k and not really getting the tonality of the J-200. you could put the same D'addarios on a Yamaha and the tone would sound the same over CZcams to my ear. maybe i've got bad ears, but i wish more people would play in their strings a little bit before recording these types of videos. otherwise, really enjoyed the discussion and thanks for the informative video! still dreaming of owning one of these bad boys, and great content - thx!

    I have wanted a J200 since I first heard Pete Townsend play “Behind Blue Eyes”, 50 years ago! Will be retiring in a few months, and now that I can actually afford one, I have decided on the RainSong carbon fiber Jumbo. I am planning a leisurely open mic road trip around the lower 48, so I can put the RainSong in a gig bag, throw it into the car, and not worry about the temperature or humidity. Wouldn’t do this with a J200. And, will have about $1500 left over for gas, tolls and 🍺🍺🍺! Maybe after my travels are finished, I will trade the RainSong in for the real thing!
