- The Salvage Sister gives you a quick tutorial on how to pry the planks off a wooden pallet to deconstruct it. Taking pallets apart can be harder than it looks - resulting in split planks & ensuing rage! But it's easy when you know how with inexpensive tools.

So nice to find a video where they have tools that most people have. As much as I love our American cousins and the amazing stuff they do in their garages, their idea of what are basic tools are so different to what most people think are basic tools!
Simple when you think about it, Thank you. I have split countless lengths of wood trying to use one crow bar.
A little more patience is all I needed.
Glad I took the time to watch your video. A big thumbs up from me.
Out of numerous videos, I used your technique for dismantling a pallet . Worked a treat. Perfect!
Yes Charis! My mum and I just watched this as we are making border beds and a work bench and having a right nightmare trying to get the panels off! Thanks so much for doing this video you badass! xo
Dear Charis, I am starting my DIY journey with you your video. I was able to get a reciprocating saw for £35 from screwfix ( deal of the week). Your video however inspired me to do it by hand. I did split some wood but there was great satisfaction in learning how to familiarise myself with a mallet, pry bar and training my muscles to become familiar with using hand tools. I think this is an important aspect of starting DIY. Thanks once again for your video. Hope to see more from you.
SANJAY AHLAWAT thank you! Glad to be of help 🤗
Thank you Charis. That second pry bar makes big difference. Wish I saw this earlier. Love diy and reuse, upcycle stuff. I'm subscribing. Please make more vids. Take care now.
Great video Charis
Get yourself a sawzall with 9 inch blade. So much quicker and easier. Good luck! Love pallet projects I'm addicted.
Great to see a woman doing this, I have the confidence now to go and dismantle the pallets accumulating in my garden. My husband said it was Impossible to dismantle them, and I’m going to prove him wrong. 😅👍✊
This video was extremely useful. I just got into this kind of thing and I've split several planks off the first pallet I tried taking apart using one crowbar and a claw hammer, but I'll go get me another prying tool and try this way. Cheers!
Those Pallets arent easy to get apart, great advice. will look forward to more from you in the future.
Great tutorial.
I couldn't live without a pallet breaker though, it is so much easier and faster to take pallets apart than using any other tools.
Cool tutorial I like using pallets in projects and the best part is there frrreeeeee.
Cheers
Tim from wood 4 nothing
Doing this is a real pain in the butt, great video, thanks for the post.
That’s awesome! I have been using a small pry bar but haven’t tried two at once! That would make it so much easier. Great video thanks!
Mixed Up Mrs glad to be of service Ma’am! You might find some of my other videos useful too 😜
Thanks a mil Charis, watched your vid and thought sound advice, start stripping my first pallet tomorrow.
Well Charis, now I know what my husband was on about when I was biting his ear to get me a pallet for upcycling .Kept telling me I'd never get it apart!!! lol Can be done though :) Thanks for tips! x
You're welcome Joyce, let me know how you get on!
I had several large pallet's sitting at the top of my driveway.Everyday I would stare out of the window at them, wondering how the ''.....'' I was going to get them to a usable state.
Thanks Charis,I can now get on with it.I love your work.
Really worked for me, helped a lot. I used pallet wood for my van build. Thanks
I generally agree that those pallets are easier to take apart and yield more wood. The advantage of the ones with blocks is that you can just saw into/hack apart the blocks to free the nails and get at the planks. Just a thought if you've never tried it.
Thank you for making a sensible comment and not a creepy sexist one.
I tried to take apart quite a large pallet with blocks using a hacksaw and a single crowbar and it took quite some time to get through it because there were 9" nails through both sides of the block. That pallet had 3 planks going into the one block. Took a few hours because it was my first time doing it.
Nice...gotta get me one more pry bar 😎...Thanks for the knowledge!
de todos los videos que he visto, claramente ha sido el mas sencillo. muchas gracias por compartir. saludos desde Argentina
Way to go, Sister!
The wood you have against the wall is beautiful!
Thanks for the video! Great help
Nice tip on using two bars
Thanks

thanks, I will try your method
Hey Sister,
I've struggled for years with this technique. Just bought a roughneck pallet breaker on amazon for £20. It has changed my life for not a lot of money. If you break a lot of pallets you'll save hours of breaking time and have loads more building time.
Lee
thank you Charis , i did buy a 36 inch crowbar and as you said its too thick to fit between the wooden planks . its just good for destroying something. i used it to take a couch apart . it was great for that if you don't care about the pieces. i will try your method. it about working smarter not stronger. love the attire . but maybe some safety gloves to :).
i think the term for tools is crowbar and Prybar
Will try your method
Hello "Sister"! Thanks for the great info. Been doing carpentry work practically all my life when I saw what you did and I said to myself "DUH"! The one suggestion that I would like to make is turn your crow bars/pry bar 180° and use the 90° bite instead of the flat "angle". You'll get more leverage.
Thanks tho!
A lot of those pallets are cheap pine, recently I got a load of pallets with the nasty reconstructed blocks in the corners but all the boards are ash and oak! Nice video.
Thx this helped a lot👍🏻👍🏻
I have every size of pry bar, I like using a flatbed to get between the slats & stringers. I like the heavy pallets with thick boards. You can make just a boat anything, with pallets.
Always good to see other people's ideas, thanks Charis! I'll do a vid soon maybe using a recip saw and my air de-nailer!
Saw you on Fill Your House For Free, shame you're not still on there as I liked your stuff. Cheers!
I clicked because you looked cool. I left having learned. Thank you.
be patient was the point , i always broke my boards, thanks for the remainder . and love the hair ...
She had hair????
splittin pallets ! what pallets, i never seen any pallets :):) nice.
your brilliant! thank you!
You're even
Excellent and thorough tutorial. I'm not sure if it's because you're being a badass and ripping apart pallets or because you are absolutely stunning. Probably both. Thanks (0.0)'!
Hey Charis! Just a suggestion but you might want to try out the Equipment rental and or sales companies. They have longer and larger pieces of wood to be salvaged for free too. If I want pieces longer than a regular pallet that's where I go or if I want aged pieces too. ;-)
Very nice
Thank you for sharing this. there are however faster and less damaging ways of dismantling a pallet. Please see the video on dismantling a pallet with 2 boards. There is also the pallet pal. I just built one from scrap timber but then I saw the video on dismantling pallets with two boards and kicked myself. Drat.
I hope you wear a higher neck line if you use a router.
Good technique, :)
Hi Charis.... Roughneck do a demolition and lifting bar that is the mutts nuts for taking apart those pallets you used in the video, might be worth a butchers if you're going to break down a lot of pallets and it'll only cost you around a score. Thanks for sharing, Be safe and be lucky, Wol.
Watching this in 2021 and loving it👌
Haha it's been a long time since I smashed up a pallet! It makes a good workout haha. Me and my mate used to use a reciprocating saw and found that it saved hours of time and gave us a better yield as less planks split. I'd probably only recommend that if you're gonna break a lot of pallets for business etc though. We also had a specific pallet pry bar which was mega easy and fun. This method is good if you're on a budget though!
+Zebrano Wood Craft Haha, yes I have used a reciprocating saw to take them apart, but I find that quite tiring after a while & you have to be very careful. I thought most people probably wouldn't have a reciprocating saw, so this is a cheap & easy method that I prefer, if I was doing hundreds at a time I might change my mind! Lol
Great idea I will be trying this soon. I'll let you know how it goes :)
Mary-Anne Swanson
No, please don’t.
Always a good idea to stay abreast of the latest techniques! You my dear, are absolutely stunning!!Heaven lost an Angel when you fell out of it!!!
Aww! Thank you 😊😘
abreast of the latest techniques..... I see what you did there :-)

Here are a lot of great woodworking plans that you can try out: HootWood.com
Cheers! Good method. 🔨🛠🔧🚪
Good vid....Thank you
You are so cute. I really like how you put both pry bars on that way it will safe all the wood. I have seen some videos where the slats art cut along the long side pieces but it wastes the wood. Thank you.
hi, thanks, great method. I've just tried it. However, I had to put wedges under each piece of wood I prised before moving on to the next one. Otherwise, they just went back in again.
Can we see you taking apart one of those palets with the wooden blocks please? Or is it just the same method?
Oh, yes, and nails. any ideas on getting them out easily?
thanks
Cool. Just subbed
Just got a set of bars and a nice hammer, works a treat well worth getting. Still want a reciprocating saw, much easier lol
Good 👍 job
Very useful, thanks. I was hoping you would demo how to get the nails out. Also, pallets marked HT mean they are heat-treated, therefore safe for planters for veg. Non HT are treated with chemicals.
WOW .... I was seven minutes into the video, before I realized it was about breaking apart wooden pallets!
I tried making a pallet breaker and it kept breaking the boards. I tried cutting the nails with a reciprocating saw but that left nails embedded in the support pieces. I'll try this method next. Thanks for the vid.
We used to get them from Brixton market then burn them on our fires Also use them as beds back in 1982.
I got quiet skilled at breaking them with my feet Kung-Fu style was really quick. I love & remember them happy days squatting behind Brixton police station.
Its basis common sense and it works. I have a Cresent bull bar or removal tool and I crack board's constantly. So back to basics for me.
I purchased a proper pallet destructor, and for the price found it useless, it cracked and split every board, I think that the prongs points aren't flat enough so don't place equal pressure on both sides, your method although having to bend over the pallet, but the beauty is it really works, and is probably quicker...
Thanks great video
Hey.. saw You on TV the other day.. in U.K. By the way.
Thank you :)
I'd like to know more about that big, beautiful slab of wood on the right!
great video. quick question: I love using pallets for all sorts of DIY jobs. But I'm always worried about using this kind of old timber cos of woodworm and such. Any ideas/comments on this? thanks. Felix
Felix Reali make sure it isn't rotten (obviously) then if you are still worried about it cover it in a coat or two of polly urethane. nothing can live through that
This method may work for boards that are 5/8ths or thicker, but i have yet to find a way to remove nails from thinner boards (other than drilling the nails ).
Great video, seems lots of people in the comments section seem to have forgotten why they clicked on the link for lol
How about using either a manual car jack or hydraulic car jack. Car jacks are normally used to raise the car for tasks like changing tire, oil change etc. The point is they can apply slow opposing pressure which in theory should separate the pallet wood two pieces at a time with little effort. The hydraulic one would be my first choice. If that is not available most people will have at least one manual car jack.
Great video... if you clip the nails off leaving about 1/2 inch then one smack will pop the head on the opposite side making it easy to remove 🤠👍🔨
thanks for this. got given a load of pallets to build a chicken coop with, thought the pallet dismantling was going to be a piece of piss...oh my god, was it buggery.
If the pallet is dry I leave it out in the rain or spray it with water which helps to stop the wood from splitting.
Could you sort of flip the pallet upside down, then use a hammer or rubber mallet to pound the boards from the underside (now the top)?
reciprosaw is the best, just saw the nails and tap them out or use a steel bar and weld a fork on it :D saves alot of time!
Stand the pallet on a corner and drop it couple of times this looses the nails and you can take them apart easily 👍
nice pry bars
Those tools do work well but I built a pallet buster for very little...I posted a video of it if you would like to see how it works. It works very quickly.
It’s a demolition lifting bar..made for this sort of pallets. I did 100 pallets in a day, then 3 days de nailing lol
roughneck is the way forward great vid
The "Euro" pallets with the blocks of either solid wood, plywood, or sawdust will also come apart easily if you whack the blocks HARD with an 8-pound sledge parallel to the deck. There's a lot more waste, strips of MDF and such but many of these "Euro's" feature plywood decks. I have become much more discriminating about which pallets I pick up, I have a dozen or so to strip before the snow flies.
Thk lot
The nails used are generally banged in below the surface, how do you knock these back out with out the nail head pushing out a huge splinter from the top surface?
Y Love Pallets
Neat!
cheers thumbs 👆
Great video, sound could be better, it makes a nice for us British people doing workshop videos, instead of all the Americans dominating CZcams ! Keep up the good work 😄
How do you take the nails out? Might be a dumb question but I am very much a beginner
First time seeing you. Do you ever build anything and do you ever answer people that have questions for you?
Rolo Thatcher yes to both questions! Here's one of my latest videos - czcams.com/video/K74E18zmanA/video.html I work on all kinds of projects, see more of my work on Instagram, I'm @chariswilliams777 😊
What will you do with the wood?
mi sono iscrittooooohh !!!
nice
Tip, try using a heavier hammer,e.g. club hammer, you won't need to hit the bar as many times.
how do you remove the nails?
Just thanking you for the great ideas/suggestions and THANK YOU for all the other stuff. A lady who's not afraid of tools is goddess-like to most men. And an attractive lady doing that is w0w !!!
So are ladies in pick-up trucks. Keep up the great work.

Get yourself a floorboard lifter,ya cant beat it!!!
Totally agree with you. You can pull apart a pallet in a matter of minuets with one. Its called a, Roughneck 64640 Demolition And Lifting Bar. You can get one off E-Bay for £22 inc pp.
Try Toolstation at £19.12p Aye Mark!!!
+mark francom I throw water on the pallet then I wait let the water socks and then I use a hard broad and hes them up
Wish I had seen this before I started. 1 pallet took 2 hours. Only another 11 to go. Things should go a lot quicker now
Where do you get the pallets from?
That's just about the hardest way. I made an all steel pallet breaker and some boards are still hard to remove or they break. It just depends on how it was built. Some palletts use 3 nails or big nails. Also depends how much of the board you actually need.
So 2 bars. Ok I'll try that. The ring nails can be impossible. I've snapped a pry bar in half on a pallet. I've just used a skill saw to cut the centers out. Tough job, wanted the hard wood kindling.
