UK Storm Discussion: Tornadoes and Strong Winds Possible?

In this UK weather forecast video, we look at the risk for some severe weather this afternoon and evening across S/SE England. These storms may be severe and even bring the threat for one or two tornadoes as well as strong gusty winds.

Quick disclaimer:
While there is a risk of a couple tornadoes across S England today - it is entirely possible none occur at all, as these things are very unpredictable.
And even if a tornado or two does occur, the chance of it being where you are is so low that it's not worth worrying about - the more widespread risk will be torrential rain, strong winds and lightning. But given there is a risk of tornadoes today its worth mentioning. Enjoy your Saturday everyone!

When was the last tornado in the SE of the UK and which town?

There have probably been a couple more that I have missed but the last major event was on October 23rd last year when we had I think around 6 tornadoes touch down. @@jamiesaviation7390

October is often pretty unsettled and when that overlaps with instability as the storm season dies down, you can get some significant thunderstorm events - last year a good example of that as you say.

I can remember when I was 10 years old in 1955 and a dust circle happened which I found exciting and stood in it as all kinds of small things rose up around me. It was gentle and didn't last very long. A mini tornado? Don't know just grateful it wasn't the start of the real thing.

What sort of gusts to expect?

Peak gusts will be 60-70mph possibly in the most intense storms. Most of us will see gusts of 30-40, sometimes 50mph in the stronger cells
