I was diagnosed as a type 2 diabetic in 2008 I used metformin for a couple years but was able to lose weight and control my blood sugar by diet only for over 10 years. As I got older it became harder to control my blood sugars and went back on metformin and it is working great.
I have been using metformin for years, I am a type 2 diabetic, I am a long time diabetic, & am only in the early CKD. I am glad to hear some good things about the drug.
Can I ask if you think it was the metformin that started your CKD only I'm kidney transplant I don't know if I should take it or not it's all confusing to me .
@@maryskinner5079 no, in my case being a diabetic of over 40 years is what is weakening my kidney function, if anything, the metformin might have slowed the progression since I have taken it for 30 years.
Thank you for this. I should have begun metformin 10yrs ago but I was determined that I could outrun diabetes with diet and exercise. Of course, over time, this got harder and harder to do. Now my kidneys show some damage 😕
I had pretty good control of my diabetes for the nine years I've had it, I averaged a 6.5 on my A1C. My kidney's are down to 33. My kidney doctor said if I took Metformin one more time it could be lethal. I went off metformin in Sept. and now my A1C is 8. what do you guys think. I just sent your video to my daughter who is a nurse practitioner. Your show is the absolute best on medical knowledge.
Happy our show is helpful for you! You could get a second opinion from another doctor since eGFR is borderline the cut off of when Metformin stops being used in CKD. Also discuss other DM meds and really focus on diet and lifestyle to help lower blood sugar and A1c. Best of luck!
I had kidney discomfort or pain every tim I take Metformin, the timing cant lie, and I've heard more than one story of people exacerbating their Kidney disease with Metformin, it cant be all a coincidence..
My doctor stopped my Metformin and gave me Farxiga. My eGFR was 34. I started plant base and it came up to 56. I am still plant base and will take another lab soon. I am really thinking about going back to Metformin.
i’ve been diagnosed with IGA after a biopsy. what course of treatment could i be discussing with my doctor please? i live in a small town in South Africa.
I know this is not about metiformin but its a question i have. I read that (monk fruit) sugar subsitute like in the raw, has a healing property for the kidneys. I know from your videos that sweetners are not a good idea for kidney issues. Can you do a video on monk fruit please. I like to have a cup of coffee with my homemade nut milk and some sort of sweatner. Thanks
Doesn't a WFPD reduce the risk of lactic acidosis? Daily, I typically consume over 2 pounds (raw weight) of 15 different vegetables and over a pound of over six different fruits (tomatoes are a fruit). Thanks.
Thank You! I stopped taking Metformin because it made me feel ill, my stomach was doing cartwheels & way too many visits to the toilet & in pain. I struggle with it but now i am feeling mighty unwell & yes aches in my kidney(s). I read that getting my stomach banded will knock down type 2, i am considering it.
Exactly my problem it was. ask your doctor to prescribe Metformin that is control release. What it does it releases Metformin slowly to your systems and your body will get used to it. Mine did. With the other one I was doing toilet ran 7 times a day. Felt so Ill losing water and sodium. For now drink saline twice a day till your medication is sorted fast.
Doctor prescribed Metformin to lower increasing Albumin to Creatine ratio. Said it would reduce bubbly foamy urine as well. The ratio should be 0-20 mine is 127. Will Metformin help me?
I want to ask one question,do you think taking baking soda 1 tsp in a glass of warm water 3 times a week in an empty stomach will cause protein to leak from kidney?
Thank you for this. I'm on it and can relax now. When I first took it I realised I'm not eating as much and it was Metformin. I take modified release one because I can't tolerate the other one. 500mg am and 500mg pm. Is it ok the modified release one?
hello, i am 30 years old. My insulin resistance is gone. In my blood test, the glucose value was 113. My father and brother are diabetic. I've been using metformin 500mg for 2 weeks, the doctor suggested diet and exercise, but I said I wanted to use this drug because my doctor suggested this to me and now I'm wondering if I'm using metformin for 1 year, will it harm my kidneys?
Sir am 27 yrs old now. I had 2 misscarriages. 1st time i got preeclampsia n my baby was still birth😓 at 6th month. 2nd baby also gone on 4th month. This time i found protein on my urine. My spot pcr is above 600 . There is no albumin on dipstick. When we go on Ultrasound they reported that Rt kidney is normal n there is Renal paranchemal disease grade 1 on left kidney. What will i do now. I dont have a baby. Can i have a baby in future? Pls help with this.
Itching can be from uremic toxins building up in kidney disease. It could also possibly be a medication side effect. Or completely unrelated to CKD. Definitely check with your doctor!
Thx Dr HASHMI for this eye opening , on the point and well balanced thoughts about a hot topic. Let me just add that metformin increases Akkermansia , a gut friendly bacteria , found in a certain abundance in the gut of centenarians and that , when coupled with intermittent fasting , kills cancer cells without causing weight loss or toxicity. Metformin exerts its anti-cancer effect mainly by impeding tumor cell proliferation, blocking the tumor cell cycle progression, preventing the genomic instability, inducing apoptosis and impacting cellular energy metabolism . On the other hand, Result from a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover trial revealed that metformin had both metabolic and non-metabolic effects associated with aging in the elderly, providing evidence for the anti-aging effect of metformin : Kulkarni AS, Brutsaert EF, Anghel V, Zhang K, Bloomgarden N, Pollak M, et al. Glad to hear you're in the early stages of CKD and can control blood sugar and help prevent/slow progression!
ever tought that the drug caused CKD ?

Were you diagnosed with CKD while you were on metformin or after you started it ?

Knowledge is power for being able to prevent/delay progression of CKD! It is definitely not too late, even if kidneys are showing some damage.

Please share what you did to raise eGFR to 56
Why would you go back on metformin ? Farxiga isn't working well ?
Hi guys, what's the link that says metformin helps CKD for GFR > 30. Thank you guys

If Metformin help ckd patient for more damage kidney but why my doctor stop me for consume Metformin. Now I just consume glimipiride for my diabetic
You'll want to check with your doctor who prescribed/discontinued the medication! It could be based on your eGFR that they changed your medication.
