      Do you think you can have a session talking about consuming whey protein? The most common types that people take or buy in general is the Whey Protein Concentrate and the much better one with less fillers, Whey Protein Isolate which is 90% pure protein powder. My doctor says that I can drink it and I'm like, "I'm a stage 3, CKD and I'm good to take it???" It;s suppose to be more easily digestable and a much cleaner source of protein powder compared to the Concentrate that has many unwanted ingrediants! This is the one major topic you don't hear many people talk about and isn't Boost, Ensure and other protein drinks that we buy over the counter very simlar to the protein powders anyways but just contain different essential vitamins and other things?

    Great info. I'm a fanatic on exercising. With the recent news of a eGFR of 57 I was told not to perform vigorous excercises. Maintaining good Kidney function is so complex, thinking exercising 6 days weekly I'd be helping my kidneys but now told to be careful not to perform vigorous weight training. Would you guys consider doing an episode on exercising and CKD? Thanks, James

    Thank you for this segment. I watch you bc was a caregiver for someone in my family who recently received a new kidney. However…I had a recent scare on my first night a European vacation when my doctor called me at midnight to say my potassium was at 6.2 from my blood test that I took on the Friday before my flight! I’m 62 and I’m fairly healthy and my goal is to always be within range for my blood tests. So both my doctor and I were alarmed. After going over my diet, she felt that maybe what I had been eating might contribute to the high potassium and wanted me to find a diuretic on my travels (which was difficult in the countries I was visiting). I researched and searched your videos for high potassium and of course, I was more alarmed at the consequences of high potassium after watching this video. And then you talked about the impact of tightening your fists during the test and that is exactly what I did bc the tech had a hard time getting a vein-and i clenched my fist for a long time. So with that bit of info, I felt a little bit more at ease, but for this trip-I definitely did not ‘eat’ my way through Europe-I completely changed my eating behaviors and ended up losing weight at the end of our trip. My blood test the day after I returned home showed a 4 potassium. So a long story to say that your videos are extremely educational. So thank you.

    Insightful information .. I learnt a lot. Have a question around potassium ..Can one be in Stage 4 CKD, still have potassium levels in range of 3.5 - 3.7 mmol/L. She is on sodiumbicorbonate less dosage. She is on low potassium diet. Do you think this can be a case of psuedo hypokalemia. Her BP level is high around 160/100. She is on Telmistaran, nebivolol and amplidopine for BP.
    Can she eat fruits and veggies..

      We definitely recommend that people with kidney disease consume fruits and veggies! It can help lower blood pressure too. You would just choose fruits and veggies that fit individual potassium needs. Even a "low potassium diet" isn't a "no potassium diet"!

    Interesting. You guys are doctors and never mentioned anything about the pump. That’s the regulator is that correct? I’m talking about the sodium/potassium pump that’s the regulator that keeps a balance throughout our body and as well as the other electrolyte calcium/magnesium pump. And how it’s very important and it’s well in balancing the health of our body. The sodium potassium/pump it’s a possibility if the potassium is too high you can add in more sodium and if the sodium is too high which can cause high blood pressure just adding more potassium to control high blood pressure. Our body is extremely remarkable and if you give it the right foods and nutrient it’ll do everything what it needs to do, isn’t that correct?

    • @PlantBasedKidneyHealth
      @PlantBasedKidneyHealth  Před 2 lety +4

      Hello! Potassium helps control blood pressure which is important for kidney health. Most people in early stages don't have issues with blood potassium levels and therefore should not restrict potassium intake unnecessarily. As kidney function declines it can become more difficult to control blood potassium levels and intake may need to be limited in diet. It's important to understand your individual lab results and work with your doctor and renal dietitian to understand your individual needs.

      @PlantBasedKidneyHealth  Před 2 lety +1

      Hello! We recommend working closely with the nephrologist and renal dietitian in the dialysis unit to address all possible reasons for high potassium. From the diet side, you can keep a food journal or track your intake in an app like Cronometer so the dietitian can see exactly how much potassium you're taking in. Salads can always be adjusted to be lower potassium ingredients if needed. Also important to make sure that there are no potassium additives hidden in any food you're consuming (potassium chloride for example).
