Eisner is like the cartoon re-occurring villain for Defunctland videos. Sometimes he’s a villain, sometimes he’s a nuisance and sometimes he’s just present and doesn’t even do anything wrong... but undoubtedly, he almost always turns up at least once an episode.

I actually met Kellyn a few years before she passed away. She was an instructor at my local Curves, and when my mom told me who she was, I was totally starstruck. We became friends, and we had burgers together at In n Out one time. She even gave me a book of inspirational quotes as a gift just because, and she adamantly told me that I should never ever let anyone dictate who I was or my own happiness. She stopped coming around to Curves suddenly and I only found out she was sick when my mom happened to get the news from another Curves member. I was incredibly sad to hear when she passed, but I am so happy that you made this video, which is such a lovely tribute to her. The last time I saw her, I remember her riding off in her red car, blasting Oingo Boingo's Dead Man's Party on the radio. She is one bad ass woman.

Harp Ann seriously a bright light in this world. Didn’t matter that she was older and not on camera for Disney anymore. She just had an awesome attitude in general. I wish I had one last chance to see her just so I can give her a hug and let her know I never forgot her advice. I do miss her.
Wow, nice! I was born at the end of 1982 so I was sadly too young to enjoy the Mousercise craze. I love the '80s and Disney and have unfortunately never heard of it or Kellyn until now. How fun! I would have loved to have had Kellyn as my elementary school physical education teacher. She rocked 😎

I can't imagine having the energy this lady has. She does all that aerobic work and barely loses her breath during the talking segments. They would record multiple shows a day?? I have to admire the woman's stamina. And she has a real enthusiasm coming off of her, I think they found the perfect host really

I totally remember this, more from the late 80s since I was born Sept. ‘82 and 1987 is what I well remember and on and would catch it on the free Disney channel screening event weekends and was so happy Disney channel would offer those otherwise I just had to listen to the audio and fuzzy channel visuals lol

Kellyn seems like she was a great host. I expected this episode to be about a silly, messy Disney project, but I genuinely like the concept.

Definitely! Her charm and energy helped turn what could have been a boring jump into the fitness bandwagon into something truly delightful. And shooting six episodes in a single day!!!
agree, she made it work.. it could have easily flopped with the wrong host. 5 eps in a day seems like a lot until you realize that's basically what instructors were doing full time in aerobics studios all across the country in the 80s.. 5 eps was probably a breeze compared to working a day in her father's studio.
Some people just have a talent for it. I don't have that sort of rapport with kids. I would look stupid trying to do this but she pulled it off.

Sounds like my gym teachers in the early/mid 90's. Parents had to threaten to sue the school before the instructors would heed my medical notes stating I had asthma and truly couldn't be made to run the mile, and certainly not at pace with the other kids. Apparently these notes also stated I had an inhaler to use but it was never made available to me during gym class.
@@FairbrookWingates Gym teachers have a habit of taking shit way too seriously and way too far. Especially the male teachers, as I notice they're often the ones that proudly embody the toxic traits of masculinity; being really macho, ignoring children or parents concerns because "______ builds character, so stop whining", they're often still hung up on reliving their glory days of being a star jock at their high school, they often whine about "participation trophies" (something that has been a thing since the 1970s, when they would've been kids/tweens/teens depending on their age)... you know, the usual. While the female PE teachers, at least mine in middle school, often would be just as bad as their male counterparts, if only because they wanted to be taken seriously as women or had a lot of unresolved internalized misogyny where they would be unnecessarily harsh on female students because "Oh I had to do it too when I was your age, suck it up!" or "I have periods and get cramps too, and you don't see me holding a pity party and feeling sorry for myself! Go run a mile lap NOW!' Gym teachers are their own species.

I recall a male gym teacher in elementary school that wasn't too bad and one semester of high school I took an independent weights class under a male instructor who just left us alone to work at our own pace. It was always women who were making my peers and me run the mile, as I recall.
I remember my gym teacher yelling at me "I've had kids with asthma that don't breathe that hard when they run! Stop faking it!" Guess who had ~ undiagnosed asthma~
The want me to have endurance and stamina, but they don't teach you how to build it, they just expect you to be able to do it. That's not healthy that's torture imho

The 80’s, and Coke
For those wondering why Mickey's voice sounded weird in Mousercise. That's because during that period, Jack Wagner was the official voice of Mickey Mouse. He also voiced Minnie, Goofy, Chip N Dale, Pluto and various Disney Characters during that period. He mainly voice them at the Disney Parks throughout the 1980s. It wasn't until Disney created "Disney Character Voices International" in 1988 that Disney starting using the official voice actors to voice the characters for other material. Wagner voiced Mickey and Minnie as late as 1988/1989.
Very interesting. I know on the "Mousercise" record from 1982, Pete Renaday voiced Mickey Mouse; he was pretty much Disney Records's main Mickey voice. The same record also had Tony Pope as Goofy, and Clarence Nash reprising the role of Donald Duck.
I simply figured Mickey was deep into his helium tank addiction at the time.
I honestly thought that when Kevin said that the Steve character was narrating the Did You Know segments, that Steve was the off-brand stand-in Mickey voice just for this show because the official Mickey voice actor wasn't available for whatever reason... And then, Steve started actually talking.
I can't believe they thought that knock-off falsetto sounded good for Mickey.
I’m hurt that Kellen is no longer with us. I literally woke up early to exercise with this show as a toddler, towel and all. This was those most fun I’ve ever had exercising in my life.

Kellen seems like such a good person, I work with young kids so I've really come to appreciate when you can tell someone else enjoys talking, interacting, and teachings them, far too many elementary teachers I've met seem to hate children
I'm sure there are teachers out there that genuinely hate children, but I personally believe that it might be less that and just stress from being overworked, underpaid, and underfunded. Doubly so since my sister-in-law is working to become a full-time teacher, and she's been a teacher's aid to preschool to elementary age kids, and she enjoys working with them, it's just the stress of the job, not making enough money, having to worry about whether or not the school she's working at will continue to employ her into the next semester or if she'll have to find work in another district that is 1) actually hiring and 2) will pay decently (she's shared stories of being severely underpaid working for intercity type schools because the district doesn't deem payment or proper funding for the classrooms as "necessary" because the kids are from low-income families and "most likely not go to college, if they don't drop out of high school first" so the schools are widely written off as unimportant compared to the more homogenized (dominantly white) schools in their district. Being a teacher can be a thankless job, and I really sympathize with anyone who chooses that career-- especially those who still enjoy it after all the shit they have to deal with.

My first grade teacher hated kids, or maybe she just hated me. I don't really know why she would because I generally stayed out of trouble and when I did get in trouble it was usually because I misunderstood an instruction. IDK but either way she was mean and I missed my kindergarten teacher a lot that year
YES, I totally agree. I also work with kids too and you can just tell when someone 'has it' and she definitely had it. Made to share knowledge and joy with children on a topic she was passionate about.
Despite being a fat little indoor child, I loved music and dancing and was obsessed with this show as a kid. Kellyn was such a good host, and I remember thinking she was so kind and pretty she must be a special exercise Disney princess when I was very little.
Also, this video reminded me of "You and Me, Kid" which I had completely forgotten about until I heard the title, and went into full flashback mode.

When I was in middle school I owned "Mickey UnRAPped." Which is exactly what it sounds like. With classics such as "U Can't Botch This" and "Whatta Mouse."

Cynicism aside, I’m glad this show didn’t look like it talked down to the kids watching. It gave them good fitness tips and even told them to take a break if they were tired. It’d be cool if they added it to Disney+ for kids stuck at home.

@@rhett8819 They would have signed contracts giving up the right to their likeness on all recorded video of themselves done for the show that Disney could do almost anything they want with it. fairly standard media contracts. However putting on Disney+, if they are anything like my nieces, and nephews they would skip by it, and go EWWWW 80's!!! yet sit through Stranger things, and other 80's stuff without even knowing it. Go Figure 🤷♂️
The non Disney owned music label music rights are the real issue. The "popular hit tracks" segments would have to be cut or replaced because they likely only got rights for the tv airing.
I was in kindergarten when that original record came out. We had to do it as a way to encourage fitness. I guess it kinda worked as I got into weightlifting for a while as I got older.
I can vividly remember waking up at 6:30 a.m. everyday as a 5 year old to never miss a mousercise. I loved doing these workouts and would get so giddy seeing the characters workout too.
Now 30 years later I am still a workout fanatic. This is one childhood TV subconscious programming I’m actually glad did it’s job ✌🏽

I wish there were more fun workouts nowadays too! For adults as well. I’m 20 and I would prefer mousercise😂 lots of adult modern workouts are like “NO PAIN NO GAIN, SO GO EVEN IF YOU FEEL LIKE DYING OTHERWISE YOU ARE A P..SSY”. They are also now often made by people with serious eating disorders, etc, so they also start praising a bad lifestyle, strict diets, working out through pain and discomfort, and plenty of other negative stuff. Which always only pushes me away
I’m not a huge sports fan but even this video and the mousercise positive vibes got me inspired and wanting to get more fit. I loved this friendly approach, where the trainer tries to make working out fun and actually makes you smile (instead of making you feel bad about yourself)

I was a mouserciser when I was a child. At the time, it came on at 5 am and I remember rushing downstairs to exercise every weekday morning. I wanted a leotard and ankle warmers so bad!!! Thanks for the nostalgia, I completely forgot about this show.

Aw, Kellen looked like she was the perfect host for the show and really gave her all to those performances. I also love all the teachers exercising with their students virtually during COVID-19, great way to stay engaged and educate kids on healthy lifestyles.

Another one from my child hood. I did this in my kindergarten class. But I remember in the morning I would get up with my mom and she would do Jane Fonda and I would do Mousercise. We would watch and excerise together. I remember loving it because it was my special time with my mom.

Kellyn really does seem to have been perfect for this segment because watching her move, she has so much energy that she almost looks like a cartoon character herself. What a brilliant personality

Yeah, I hate how there's so little Disney Channel Original stuff from the pre-2000s, except for the movies. I think today's kids would enjoy Mousercize, Adventures in Wonderland, Sing Me A Story with Belle, and other shows.
Seriously, I remember this. My mom worked for cablevision. So we got all the early HBO, Cinemax and Disney entertainment. I feel sooo old, but I sure loved those leg warmers!

I tried getting my 62 year old boss to do Richard Simmons work out tapes with me, and he counter offered with Olivia newton john. But i think i just found the perfect middle ground, so thanks Kevin.
This feels fun and creative for kids who loved Disney. This also checks off another series from the original Disney channel that DefunctTV has covered, which is a real treat. Kevin's narration throughout the ants at a picnic workout part was so good! It's overall a good time!
That is amazing that even during all of this Teachers are still trying to help kids out even online. Amazing people that are not respected enough.
You know what Disney could have done to help So much with the distance learning stuff. Actually created all of the in universe captain America edutainment Videos for schools that must have been made.
God I loved this show as a kid. My mom even has some old VHS tapes of ME working out to it. So many great memories. The Disney Channel I remember was so wonderful to grow up with. Thanks for covering this ❤️

Every morning my mother would drag us out of bed to Mousercise when I was a kid. This brought back so many memories. I am so deeply sad that Kellyn died from cancer. That show was only as good as it was because of her. She was so amazing.

I had that orange audio tape back in the day. It's kind of funny that Disney had orange audio tapes in the '80s and Nickelodeon had orange video tapes in the '90s. God, I'm old.

That orange cassette tape was called the “Disney Songtape”. They put out a series of albums with a booklet that came with it. This ran from 1979 and into the 1980’s.

My elementary school gym had these poster boards with mousercise artwork/instructions on them. Every once in a while for gym class the coaches would lay each poster against the walls making "stations". You'd get into groups, they'd play music, and you'd move on to the next station when they blew the whistle. This was in the early 00s.
This series keeps getting better and to think I only found it about a year ago

THANK YOU for this episode! I was a big fan as a kid of 4 or 5, watching the reruns in the early '90s. The show would come on at some ridiculously early hour on Saturday mornings (6 or 7?) and I would wake up before my parents to watch it. (I'm sure they appreciated my keeping myself occupied...) I'd always grab a towel so I could be like the kids on the show with their mats. I'd forgotten that was actually a suggestion from Kellyn and I'm glad you included that in the video. Great memories.
