    I mean it’s not a thing of absolute beauty but it’s ingenious and the fact it’s completely DIY, makes it extremely impressive. The aquaponics system for the plants was also a great idea. I’d love to see you rake another shot it some day to improve on what you learned with this build. Great job though. Super nice 👍🏼

      @@neilryan9664 Hi there i want to thank you for such insightful video on filters. I have a question i hope you might help me out. I have just build a pond without bottom drain so im now looking to fit a retro bottom drain, after looking at one of your videos explaining the difference between gravity fed and pump fed system, im comfident i can achieve a gravity fed system similar to yours. However, my question is it possible to fit gravity fed system to retro bottom drain using just 1 large filter box such as a waste bin containing the bio, mechanical instead of using 3 buckets or drums like you done yours on the above video?. Sorry it probably sounds like a stupid question. Thanks

  • @tamariderr
    @tamariderr Před 4 lety +3

    One of the nicest thought out filtration systems I’ve ever seen. Love the t-joints for customisation and adding in parallel UV and Aquaponics. Since it’s gravity fed do you find the vortex on the settling chamber a touch slow? Only modification I’d make is chucking in a bag or two of lava rock or alfagrog in the last chamber- much much higher surface area than the k1 and would complement the fluidised bed chamber nicely.

    • @neilryan9664
      @neilryan9664  Před 4 lety

      Cheers. The slower the vortex the more efficient it is. I had a pump fed vortex previously and found that only a fraction of the waste settled out. Yes lava rock would be a good addition 👍

    Hi there ... great setup. Only part about your pond that I'm still trying to figure out is how is the retro fit at the bottom of the pond pulling water out of the pond into your first container? Been watching your video over and over and can't seem to figure it out. Maybe I'm thinking to hard. Not a expert at plumbing here, clueless as to how your water leaves the pond with a verticle piping like that. Explanation would be greatly appreciated. I like to setup the same thing on my pond.

    • @neilryan9664
      @neilryan9664  Před 4 lety +1

    Lovely fish, I'm no expert, but the koi look well selected. You must have a good eye. I would love to see these, once you have grown them on.
    I noticed that the small UV is doing well, zapping the single celled algae, (green water.)
    I noticed the brush algae is thick in the pond. Normally my fish devour this as it grows.(You must be feeding them really well;-))
    This type of algae will only do your water quality good, so no worries.
    You asked for ideas. This is mine:
    How about building a nice wooden housing for your filter? It will be more pleasing to look at?

    • @neilryan9664
      @neilryan9664  Před 4 lety

      Cheers for the feedback. To be honest I know very little about koi selection and picked them solely on what I thought looked interesting, glad you like them👍 thanks for the suggestion... a filter enclosure is something I have considered before but I might have to relocate the pond soon so I'm gonna hold off until that happens.

    • @raibeartthehairypict4696
      @raibeartthehairypict4696 Před 4 lety

      @@neilryan9664 ah I get you. So there's a method in your madness then. The whole set up will be so much more esthetically pleasing, when you get it housed.
      Tbh I was wondering, why build a good formal koi pond, and put so much thought & work into building an excellent filteration system, it's obviously been a labour of love. Then not house it. Although If you're moving the system there's just no point at the moment.
      I used to manage a tropical fish and cold water wholesaler's. We used to sell a lot of koi. I Know absolutely nothing about show specifications. Yet I was told a couple of times, by koi dealers I had a good eye for selecting Koi. Apparently some people have It, and others don't. Going by your fish, I would say you have it.
      Good luck with your hobby. BTW if you seen what I use to filter my little pond. You would probably laugh... 👍
      Ps. Love your fluidised bed. K1 Media is great stuff.

      @neilryan9664  Před 3 lety +1

      It has been fantastic to be honest. Only thing I have had to do is more regular water changes but that is due to fish growing in a small pond. The only thing I would change is build it bigger!

  • @AdamGuiness
    @AdamGuiness Před 4 lety +4

    Being a gravity system, how do you calculate the flow rate to ensure the electric pump extracts equal vol of water ? Maybe you can install the whole UV into the brush system - Less piping and it kills off the algae much earlier and your vessels will be free of algae

    • @neilryan9664
      @neilryan9664  Před 4 lety

      Not sure what you mean about the flow rate. I have a 5000lph pump and that's how much water I move. The uv does not kill string algae.

    • @foxyben1212
      @foxyben1212 Před 4 lety +1

      I have the same question, surely if the pump is more powerful than the amount of gravity fed water then the pump chamber will just empty itself? Perhaps this is achieved because the output pipe to the pond is smaller than the 3" intake? Perhaps just lucky it equals out.

    • @juliusesarda
      @juliusesarda Před 4 lety

      @@foxyben1212 You're right... Plus the return pipe back to the pond have too many bend which restrict the flow of the water.

    • @anthonydrabble2005
      @anthonydrabble2005 Před 3 lety

      Yer very true. Is hard getting them to equal out. I know it might sound crude but if you have a pump that’s to powerful you can send the water through a copper or stainless pipe and hammer the pipe down to restrict the flow bit at a time until you get the flow right. Or jubilee down to smaller pipe bore. This is exactly what we do on the wash system in our milking parlour.

    • @anthonydrabble2005
      @anthonydrabble2005 Před 3 lety

      You couldn’t be more wrong if you tried. The bottom drain stays right at the bottom of the pond to get rid of all the dirt and as long as your filter system is no lower than the pond water level, the water will just level out and remain in the pond

    Some pipes could be just too small. i think that is restricting the flow. Especially the one that brings the water through the bottom drain through the wall. If you would drill the holes lower you wouldnt achieve anything as the water would just be pumped away and you would have the water levels even lower.
