A Wild Idea | Buffalo, a Boot, and a Family’s Work to Save the Prairie

  • For years, we’ve been sourcing the humanely harvested meat for our Patagonia Provisions® Buffalo Jerky from Wild Idea Buffalo Company in South Dakota. Their mission is to regenerate the prairie ecosystem by reintroducing and increasing the free-ranging herd size of its largest native herbivore, the American bison. Wild Idea’s general manager Jilian Jones sums up the reciprocal purpose of their work: “We have to have healthy land, healthy soils, and then that feeds the buffalo, which then in turn feeds us.”
But it never sat right with us that the hides were ending up in the compost pit, so we came up with the wild idea of making a boot out of material that would otherwise be wasted.
A Wild Idea shares a day in the life on the ranch and the ethos that informs every aspect of their work, how our Wild Idea Work Boots are crafted in Portugal by fifth-generation cobblers and how everyone involved in the process is motivated to leave things a little better than they found them.

Everyone needs clothes because it is illegal to be naked and we need protection from the climate. There is no better clothes for the planet than the one made by Patagonia. Not even close. Saying they are an oil company is just a ridiculous statement. Study their mission and company DNA AND what they have done year in and year out and you will see just how ridiculous that statement is.

"I've got sleeves," as the grandfather tears up. You hear about the loss of passion between generations of farmers. This boot is an interesting concept from an environmental perspective as we all question the role of plastics that were once the promise away from animal products. I know Patagonia does their research, works with incredible farmers and suppliers, and is breathing life back into lost trades. Commend you all for the hard work.

therefore i say this. This is all pretty good.....BUT....are we saying that there aren't any boot makers in USA that can do this job so its at least in the same country and therefore less damaging to the ozone in form of saving on sending all the leather/hides over the ocean??????????
is it not a more cost effective, time efficient and more importantly, from what patagonia are trying to portray, more sustainable way of going forward with this kind of project???

well the horse existed on prairies prior to the white man (which were Spaniards with Arabian horse genes), hence "reintroduced" (since horses evolved in north America) but bison had existed on the prairie since prehistoric time. Natives expanded their range heavily by burning large areas of shrubs to let the grasses grow ( a job the extinct megafuana browsers would do) a form of wild permaculture.
