As a fellow Weldor and wearer of a Ute kilt in the shop, I'm hittin' the like button now and proudly carrying on with the show. 👍🤘👏👏👏

    Mercy me, I don't think I could have sewn a kilt with that much detail and pockets with my wonderfully new machine and all the correct things likes scissors and pins. But you did it with staples and a pocket knife. AMAZING...Very AMAZING. Subbed

    I wear a Franken-Plaid, a variation on a great kilt without the foldie-over shoulder trauma,
    Half your fabric lengthways and pin/iron the fold to hold it,
    Lay on it to find your leg length and mark your waist on the fabric.
    Fold the top fabric over to meet your waist mark^ all along, iron the fold again.
    Measure hip to hip and allow that much at each end for the under and apron, I put a marker safety pin in.
    Pleat everything between those two points as you like, knife, box, double reverse box with splays etc.
    If you want to pin any bits feel free but I don't bother apart from my markers as mentioned.
    Belt under it, lay down and belt up, above your hipbone by 2-3", you can always pull fabric up through the belt but it's tough to lower your belt, go as tight as you can.
    Go two notches tighter, trust me.
    Stand up and check your fabric is out of the belt a good inch or two.
    Do the usual full lenggth mirror check for level etc and off you go.
    I farmed out the hemming when I bought it so I can honestly say I haven't put a single stitch in it.
    :-D
    But I am looking at a machine to make a sewn kilt soon.

    I got to the part about 10 layers and stuff, do you have an attachment thingy for that? My sewing machine came with something that looks like jaws on top to move the top layers in unison with the bottom layers when it gets too thick. Also one of my kilts is made old-school and you are right, the layers pile up and it feels super thick. They must have sewing machines of titanium over in Scotland.

    • @WarpedLegacy
      @WarpedLegacy  Před 7 lety

      The only other attachments I have are a zipper foot, and a broken button hole foot. And I don't know how to use either. This is whats left over from the machine my mom threw out(mechanics, the majority of the machine) and the machine my grandma threw out (Power supply, foot pedal and some internal wiring.). They were not even the same brand of machine, What kind of kilts do you have? This is my first. The real reason I made it instead of buying it was $ to get one in my size I would have had to have one custom made. Its hard for me to find clothes.

    • @PaulsGarage
      @PaulsGarage Před 7 lety +1

      for a first kilt this one looks pretty amazing! I don't have any utilikilts, which this reminds me of, but i have a 'sport kilt' which is basically lightly pleated, polyester (to breathe), and elastic with velcro to attach in front. I also have a traditional one made by my mom's clan in scotland sized to fit me (if i lose about 20 pounds again). You're right, NOT cheap, but very nice. Next up you'll have to make a sporran! Not that you need more storage, but they look pretty boss. I knew one guy who's sporran was made out of a badger. The head was the flap you open to shove stuff inside. I have expected it to come back to life and bite his hand off. Badgers are pretty grumpy usually, and I assume he would be even more angry knowing his carcass was forced to hang over somebody's crotch for all eternity.

    • @WarpedLegacy
      @WarpedLegacy  Před 7 lety

      +Paul's Garage I plan on making some sort of sporran I have a ton of storage, but none of it is safe for my phone(I don't put a case on my phone). And I can't use the holster that I usually use. So I'm gonna make a sporran with a padded pocket for my phone.

    • @WarpedLegacy
      @WarpedLegacy  Před 5 lety +1

      I dont remember how much I used. I think it was about 5 yards, it takes a lot more fabric than it looks like it does because of all the pleats. The phrase "the whole nine yards" if often connected to kilt making. A Great Kilt can use a full 9 yards of fabric (If it is a true great kilt, it basically just is 9 yards of fabric.. ). And while I do not remember specifics about the weight of the fabric, it was a heavy duty cotton canvas.

    *WAY* to much work for me. Besides, I would prefer the great kilt for versatility. And it doesn't HAVE to be 'the full nine yards'. I think they only use 5 or 7 yards for a 'daily wear' kilt. I'm Irish (at least two lines that hopped the pond in back in the 1700's that I've found so far)(and one line from Germany, one from England; similar time period).
    I don't have a kilt, but I would love to have one. So, how much fabric did you use to make yours?

    • @WarpedLegacy
      @WarpedLegacy  Před 7 lety

      +Brian Neeley 5 yards of 60 inch wide 10oz cotton canvas. And I maybe have enough left over to make a sporran. Maybe. It was WAY too much work. In the video I almost said "I'd be willing to do it again..... For about $2000." Pleats are hard. Especially since I did box pleats.
