They were correct. Messi's personality doesn't mash well with characters who are older than him and are extroverted. Previously for Argentina, he was barely vocal, put too much pressure on himself and tended to be stiff in big moments. Maradona, who coached him, did not see him as a leader of men. As he got older he improved this aspect. One of the reasons for that is because most of the old guys moved out and a lot of the guys who came in or stayed either worship him or are his friends from the past eg. di Maria.
At Barca it was similar post Xaviesta era. Even so, he still clashed with Pique.
We don't have to revise history here, but give credit to Leo for seizing the opportunity and finally leading the team to a trophy.

He is indeed a huge introvert, but I think the bond he has with them was a factor. Scaloni, Aimar and the whole coach team put a special effort in how the teammates get along, they tried to build a bond among them and they succeeded! They're like a family now, and also they fully trust Lionel in the leader job. I think all of that made him comfortable enough to talk in such a natural, fluent way.

Indian myself - supported and cheered for only one football team my entire life - since I was a small boy to now the age of 35. Literally broke my heart every 4 years. Fought really hard in 2014 against a tsunami of a German team but again broke heart in the last few mins. Totally disappointed the next time in 2018. In all this the emergence of Leo Messi was a phenomenon I never expected. When he retired temporarily in 2016 that broke my heart as well but he returned. In 2021 when they won Copa America I started having hopes because I started seeing a team in play unlike earlier when it was just messi trying his best.
I didn’t care much about the loss to Saudi.
The Mexico and Poland matches were good.
The Australia match was great. The Netherlands match was war and the croatia match was flexing muscles.
But the final was the ultimate football match and the King got his crown and my childhood dream of Argentina winning the cup became true. Vamos Argentina and long live the GOAT - Lionel Messi!

Returning to this after his 8th Ballon D’or. How things could have been different. If Kolo Miami had scored in the last shot / EMI Martinez wasn’t able to stop it, France would have won 4-3. Mbappe would get the Ballon D’or and I would have completely stopped watching football because the pain of that heartbreak would have been too much, Grateful to God for the last year. I noticed the whole team had a very different attitude after that farce 2019 copa semifinal . Messi suddenly making bolt statement criticizing conmebol , and I believe that was the moment where he and the whole team attitude & mentallity changed completely.
When the game againts Colombia in semifinal went into penalties, you could see in their body language (particularly Messi & Emi) , it was like they knew for sure they'd reach the final regardless.

I remember that when the end of the game was announced at the end of the Copa América, the camera focused on Messi and in the background the commentators (Argentines) were heard crying and saying, in between tears: "OK, that's it, it's over Leo, it's over, It's over, it's over, we're champions of America, damn it!" and at the same time the second commentator in the background shouted: "Finally, finally fuck, finally, finally!" It was quite an emotional spectacle, one of those commentators even interviewed Messi, and when he met him he couldn't help but cry with joy. I think it was the most uncomfortable and moving minute that Messi had to live. xd
