If youre getting the asus rog zeph g14, get ghelper that replaces armour crate, armour crate is nearly bloatware if though its made to help you which is why gehlper exist, it also helps stop asus programs running in the background, and with configurations, its almost 10-25C lower in temp depending on what you do even gaming, and silent mode on ghelper is actually silent no fans compared to silent mode on armour crate except if youre gaming but why would you be gaming on silent mode lmao. Ghelper does everything armoury crate does and is just simply better built, look at videos to understand it. Also side note the button for quick menu of armoury crate will just turn into ghelper menu once armoury crate is removed and ghelper is installed correctly.

I had the G14 4060, which offered really good battery life and performance, especially for the open box price. I returned it for the g14 w/ 4080 and it was a beast for the size but did get a little toasty. I wouldn't recommend the 4070, if you can find it. As well, apparently the mini-led version is not as good as the flow or M16. G14 imo is the best still for power, GPU option wise. 4090 is not worth it but the 4080 would be the best if you can fin it for a good price. The white colour on the g14 4080 I had was very clean looking as well. One final thing for any long term G14 users. Change the Dolby Audio Settings to Dynamic. This dramatically changes the speakers, for the better. In all scenarios.

Very nice and informative comparison. I would love to also see a battery life test, but I can already surmise a conclusion from the specs alone.
I'm going to upgrade for a Legion very soon. The better cooling solution on a stock solution and better screen is such a huge deal maker for me. My use case won't require more than 16 GB of RAM since at most I'll be doing some light virtual machining for work, but 50 USD for 16GB 6800MT RAM is a steal when a Crucial 16 GB 4800MT costs 41 USD on Amazon.

it was manufactured not only for annoying some sort of people but also for better cooling as well = performing, device longevity and more comfortable using without getting hurt from hot frame. The stylish design of zephyrus series is also my cup of tea, frankly, at the same time, it is rather flawed from engineering point of view cause the fans blowing all the heat out towards on the screen (wtf!? display is definitely doomed) or on the table downwards, dont have a proper air circulation (the G of 2024 revision, verryyyyyy hot sweeties).

As for the G14, its saving grace is that the the 7940hs and 4060 are both unlocked for undervolting and it has amazing community of people making apps and tutorials for it. Ive seen a lot of people on reddit get amazing temps and performance after some tinkering (windows reinstall, g-helper, undervolt, ...). Very good video and comparison. I'd emphasize that for me the ability to upgrade ram and having the better CPU on the G14 made a big difference. While it is a gaming laptop and I plan to do a lot of that on it. It's nice to have that processing power in performance mode that allows me to throw anything at it without any problems.
Not sure why your fans are running on silent mode on the G14, the G14 for me shuts off the fans and I don't hear them for the rest of the time I use it, unless I play a game, but realistically when are you going to play a game in silent mode? Most of the time will be performance or Turbo. I actually got the G14 on a HUGE sale in Dec. Got it for $1030 after tax. I added a 2TB Samsung 990 Pro nvme and another 16G Corsair RAM which were also on sale. This thing screams. So far best laptop i've owned. Spent total $1263 to end up with a 14" laptop with Ryzen 9 7940HS, RTX 4060 8GB, 32GB Ram and 2TB nvme laptop.

Amazing comparison video. I'm in Canada as well and have been going back and forth between the Asus g14 4080 and the Zenbook 14 pro oled with a 4070. Both had discounts at some point with the Zenbook at $2500 and the g14 at $3000. The Zenbook 14 pro in Canada has no touch screen which sucks. May consider the Lenovo but not a fan of the design personally and the soldiered ram/ only going upto a 4060 is annoying.

  • @Bulgdoom

So I just tested both the G14 and Slim 14, and both have problems. The fan curves are bad for both laptops with the minimum ~2100rpm, but the Asus has the G Helper 3rd party app which can turn off one of the fans (GPU). The Legion ToolKit for the Skim 5 doesn't allow that so it's a lil louder, even though it's way cooler running. USB C PD sucks on both, the G14 has no pass through and can only charge the battery and not power directly. The Slim 5 limits GPU TGP to ONLY 30W!! In battery power it goes up to 45W. I ordered the 140W lenovo usb c as a work around and some USB C to DC adapters to test a workaround. Both suffer from poor fan curves overall with a lack of settings for under 2000RPM, and limitations with USB C. Shame.

      Differences:

      - 2 screens (1600p vs 3.2) on 7 instead one one OLED a 1800p. My take is OLED > 3.2k > 1600p
      - slim 5 is soldered ram. So get 32gb. Slim 7 is 16gb soldered and a free slot (so buy a 16gb stick)
      -slim 7 has better speakers
      - slim 7 has 20-25% more battery
      - slim 7 has a numpad
      - slim 5 is lighter and more portable
      - slim 7 has a usb 4 port
      Same things:
      - performance is the same. Truly
      - cooling is the same
      - keyboards and trackpad are about the same

8gb is probably fine on a 4060/70 as they lack the power to push frames on settings needing above 8

Great video man. It's clear that the Legion is the more powerful machine here despite having an inferior CPU and lower TDP GPU.
I am just a little confused how does the Legion perform better in games when the TDP is lower. I did see the power delivery portion and the GPU in G14 essentially gets lower power than the Legion, then the GPU TDP is of no real concern as it doesn't tell the actual wattage being delivered to the GPU?
As far as the cooling and throttling, I get the cooling solution on Legion is better but shouldn't the performance on G14 be better the only difference being that it runs hotter than legion?
Would really appreciate if you can shed some light on my understanding here.

    • @TechGuyBeau
      @TechGuyBeau  Před 7 měsíci +2

You are much more likely to be GPU limited than limited by the CPU. so the g14 dumping loads of unneeded power into the cpu hits cases heat (thus throttling). The legion supply’s enough cpu wattage but then puts the rest to gpu, or just supplies less overall if uneeded. Lower temps means better performance if you are facing throttling
