How many outs do you have and what are your odds of getting there?
    Hero: T♦9♦
    Villain: K♠K♣
    Board: Q♦J♦J♠T♠

      14 outs

13 outs…the 8 of diamons is already accounted for in the flush draw outs, little worse than a 3-1 dog with one card to come….thats where I do my best work.

      @@kenrobinson1188 you have 9 diamonds for the flush, 3 non diamond 8's, and 2 10's for a full house. 9+3+2 = 14

@@kenrobinson1188 14 outs total. 9 diamonds(note that Kd makes straight flush, beating villain's boat). 3 eights(not counting 8d twice). (Kh makes a straight but villain gets boat). 2 tens.

All diamonds left are live (even K of diamonds as straight flush beats a boat!) which is 13-4=9 flush outs, then 3 more 8’s give hero a straight, and two tens left give us a full house so 9+3+2=14 outs or about 31.5% equity.

how do you know that you will win 30% of the tine? is this an arbitrary number? without having a drawing hand pos-flop, how do you then calculate equity?

Didn't know the rule of 2, very useful to know at any time the equity of your draws!

The rule of 2 isn’t super accurate as there are 44 cards left HU so to convert to percentage (14/44)x100= 14x(100/44)=14x2.27… so better approximation would be multiple by 2 and a quarter or 28+14/4=28+3.5=31.5% is much closer to the equity you have. Still a fold but a 3.5% difference is pretty substantial.

Jonathan, how do I know I will win 30% of the time at 2:09? Where is this number coming from?

    • @gagebillingsley1025

You can ballpark your equity by using the rule of 4 / 2. Say your opponent throws out a 1/3 pot bet on the flop and you think they could have top pair and you’re sitting with a flush draw. You need 25% equity to call (not factoring in implied odds), and your flush draw gives you 9 outs so that’s 36% equity assumed making the call profitable. However, if he has a set then your equity greatly reduces because you have to remove an out and then reduce your equity because they have a draw to a boat if you hit your flush. This is why it’s important to calculate your equity versus their entire range but it’s a little complicated and this explanation is fine for the sake of understanding the concept.

The easy math should be like this: what pot odds should I call on flop, turn and river with
    - a gut shot
    - flush draw
    - flush draw & gut shot
    - flush draw & OEST
    - full house draw (set/trips/2 pair)
    etc
This kind of math is way easier to remember. The main mistake people do is paying too much for a weak draw/
When you know these odds more or less, you will win more than lose.
For example, I often call or re-raise with a top pair on FD flop because I know there is only 36% chance to complete the flush. Is some countries people love to go all in with FD and no connection at all. So, learn the habits at the table and it would be easier to win.

It’s not that I don’t wanna do the math. It’s the fact that other people sit there doing the math thinking it’s ok to make the rest of us at the table to wait 10 minutes for a dumbass to make each and every decision. It’s so bad these days I literally give a player 2 or 3 minutes and then I call for a clock. Should not take 15 minutes to think out a $15 pot. If you’re all in I’ll give you an extra minute or two but that’s it.
