- Progressive activist Bishop John Shelby Spong receives the Religious Liberty Award and best-selling author Jared Diamond receives the Humanist of the Year award at the American Humanist Association's 75th Anniversary Conference on May 27, 2016, at the Hyatt Regency McCormick Place Hotel in Chicago, IL.
I woud call John Shelby Spong one of the most effective speakers of our era. The fact that he is 16 years retired and still a better speaker than nearly all others, gives me hope for effectiveness in my own retirement and should make us ashamed at the pervasive job discrimination against the elderly.
judy thornber Hello from agnostic Lee. You like Spong and so do I. Finally he gives woman rights. I guess they found a woman has an egg for the baby through a microscope in the 1700s I think. Oh boy! I guess a woman has exactly half the DNA for the child! The average woman is a little less strong than the average man so their role is a little different but even that is changing. Woman are just as intelligent as men. They just were not given much chance in history. In some ways men are worse. 95% of the world wars even small ones are caused by men! A woman knows the pain of having a child or losing them. Men are the tribal ones when it comes to this. Love and take care.

I wouldn't call it terrific. It is ok, but really redundant and not nearly as revolutionary and he tries to make it sound. The basic ideas are what was taught in social studied classes when I was in 6th grade.
Charles C. Mann's "1491" is a much better book. It it about the same length, but densely packed with fascinating information. It covers all the subjects of " Guns, Germs & Steel" plus a whole lot more. It is much less fatalistic, showing ways that the Native American peoples were not as primitive as often assumed and had greater agency, but failed largely due to internal politics.
Shelby makes so much sense. He points cannot be disputed.

Im Brazilian, not theist in a religion style anymore - I would define myself as a "transcendentalist open-minded thinker" - but since I met this guy I loved him. He's a great and gracious man first of all, and a great and aware scholar about the meaning of this example of that cultural work about meaning made by a certain people, the bible.

I've had the book Guns, Germs, and Steel for about a million years. I hope to actually read it this year. And Dr. Spong, why haven't I read you yet, I'm sure you're on one of my "read before I die" lists. (Apparently I'm going to be around for a looooooong time.) Both of these speakers are inspiring and compelling.
Think of a world where all our religious leaders taught love,compassion and inclusiveness as Jesus did.(or was said to have)
Bishop Spong,brave,evolved and embracing his and our humanity should be causing celebration not causing so called Christians to be afraid and angry and even murderously threatening.
But this is our world. It is up to us to change that. Respectfully

If you like Bishop Spong you will like Jesus, Mari & Joji. It is on Kindle. It is a really good read.
No, they didn't miss that part of the Bible that says Thou shalt not kill, because Spong is dead of natural causes. Not of an assassination.
I agree with Spong. The gospels are literary accounts not some exact literal history. The gospels say Jesus healed many and resurrected the dead and walked on water etc. It said his fame spread throughout the land. There seems to be no contemporary writers who wrote about a famous man performing miracles. Perhaps but it seems strange. You have Jesus full of wisdom at the age of 12 at a certain synagog. No synagog has been found historically or at least not in that area. That to is not based on fact but myth. There may of been but nobody knows for sure. You have him ascending into heaven 2 completely different locations. We know this won't work unless there is some form of antigravity and a spacecraft would have to pick him up. We know in the 21st century this is problematic. Take care.
