- Crash Nebula was a potential branch-off from Fairly Oddparents, created by Butch Hartman. We learn about Crash Nebula's origin via a random episode of Fairly Oddparents, and learn about what could've been. It actually sucked for many reasons, and here's why.

Fight me cause Crash Nebula doesn't suck!
You’re phrase “the Butch Hartman school of and then the opposite happens” is catching on Mr.Ender used it and and gave you credit
As a person writing a story about aliens you Should think about what you say before you say it for the aliens looking weird to other aliens Many species of aliens could know about each other Making it not weird to see another alien. Also they’re going to school so I’m pretty sure they know that there’s gonna be other aliens also the turkey alien and the blob alien Are friends I don’t like this pilot anymore than you do but just think about what you say before you make an argument

*Fun fact:* Crash was supposed to be an adult but Nick thinks Kids only like shows about kids. Which is stupid because Looney Tunes exists and that show is beloved, Mickey Mouse exists, and Regular Show exists. Kids enjoy Marvel movies and they are about adults. Kids laugh at Peter Griffin's antics even though Family Guy is for adults. Nick wanted to make Spongebob a kid but Stephen Hillenburg fought hard for Spongebob to be an adult. In the end they compromised and had Spongebob go to boating school.

I feel like you're expecting too much for a pilot. I'm pretty sure they'd put more story arcs and character development in a full series.
Yeah that's one thing i found odd about this review. He acted like every future thing needed to be shown in the pilot when that never happens in a pilot to any story.
I think some of the problems stemmed from the lack of depth in the characters instead of a lack of development

Love her design.
She's conventionally attractive to him which is probably what he would have ideally wanted aliens to be or at the very least who he wanted to fight along side with. When he gets on the bus, he sees that his peers are the type of aliens that he'd have nightmares about so I don't blame him for being shocked, especially when they has powers over him.

@@dmlppspringtraplover Alpha didn't pay attention they did hint at aliens discriminating against other aliens. The missfit aliens who were Crash's friends said nobody liked them. Also there is the line I don't date matter.
@@icecreamhero2375 oh ok
How about this for a change. What if the aliens actually see the human as a superior. What if they feel insecure about themselves because they do not want to have to compete with a human, who they worry will beat them every step of the way. It could be a nod to your standard Alien Invasion movie where humans usually win and wipe out the aliens. There could be a few aliens that rise up against him, but the aliens that fear Him could show vulnerability, and possibly that would make them more interesting and could also give the hero an incentive to try and befriend them and calm the waters.
Baalf Games That would be such a unique way to write something like Crash Nebula
So Butch tried to make his own Buzz Lightyear.
Why didn't this work again?
Because Butch is Butch.
Its probably because it seemed like a ripoff. Most people don't watch ripoffs, unless they are laughing at them.
Ah a fellow man of culture
@@dmlppspringtraplover even as a kid when i saw this pilot i thought hey wait a minute this looks just like the buzz lightyear star command cartoon.
Because Buzz Lightyear of Star Command came out somewhere around the time Pixar noticed everyone wanted to know about Buzz Lightyear. Crashed Nebula came out in 2005, 4 years after Crash Nebula interest faded and we just accepted he was a background gag to fill up TVs.
The points missed here are interest and quality. Buzz Lightyear holds up because they actually made it to coincide with the release of Toy Story 2, when Buzz interest was still relatively high and they had to make it *good* so that even if Buzz Lightyear mania faded and someone on the face of the planet never knew the show was based off of movies, they could still watch it.
Crash Nebula on the other hand only appeared in seven episodes of the original Fairly Oddparents and was mentioned twice later, so this spinoff came out of bumfuck nowhere and the interest in Crash Nebula faded long before this thing lurched to existence - so when this thing showed up in 2005, I forgot Crash Nebula was even in the show.
I always thought Crimson Chin should've gotten his own series. He had the rogues gallery, his origin was already established, he had SEVERAL episodes dedicated to him, and he was a fan favorite character. Major missed opportunity. While with Crash Nebula, he was only mentioned a handful of times, he had no character development in the main series, and timmy never even met him in the series. Crimson Chin was hands down the better choice for a spin off
O catman
5:38 Yeah I think his scared reaction is still believable. I mean sure, he probably did expect aliens, but just because you expect to see aliens doesn't mean you're going to be fully prepared for what you encounter
One thing to consider on the whole human vs alien thing;
Compared to a lot of the species presented in that scene, Crash doesn't have anything special about him BECAUSE he's human. One of the things people do when they come up with aliens is give them abilities and powers that go beyond that of humans on top of just looking weird. An alien could have the ability to breathe fire when humans CAN NOT, an alien could have the ability to breathe under water when humans can not. The bus is filled with aliens but take into account what they can do on top of looking just weird and you'll see why Crash is still the odd one out. He looks weird to them but he also can't do anything to defend himself AGAINST them.
Consider it how Midoriya from MHA was before he got his powers. While he was at his base, just like everyone else in terms of being HUMAN, what made him the odd one out was that he didn't have his own powers and he was looked down because of that. Now on the case of Crash , he pumps himself up as being super excited but once he sees the aliens he freezes and take a look at the aliens; they aren't impressed with him. Crash was most likely thinking that the other aliens would be happy or at least sort of excited to see him but they aren't because they have no reason to be excited about a human who can't do anything and that's why he gets bullied right off the bat. Yeah, it's cliche and I will admit that but it DOES make sense because there WILL be people who look down on you no matter who you are and it's not JUST a human thing. In a story where there are so many various types of beings, it will happen and the moment with Crash being bullied on the bush sets that up on top of how none of the other kids are even speaking with each other until they start messing with Crash because for that one moment, that means that they aren't a target.
Also consider it like this; other humans possibly don't think of how they are ranked to other aliens so we'd have people who would either hate them because they are weird and then have that portion who is excited to see them without considering that aliens possibly don't want to meet US because they see us as inferior. That's what was happening on the bus. Crash was getting a big dose of bullying based on who he was when before hand he was excited, ready and friendly to meet the aliens without considering their reactions. The thing that makes this big though is that even from this, Crash doesn't turn to hate other aliens based on his first real encounter WITH them. THAT'S the important factor in him becoming a hero in that he doesn't let the actions of a few jerks cement his view point on the majority despite how badly he was treated. I know I'm going off on a bit of a hero-boy tangent here but as I mentioned, the situation is cliche but it is there for a reason.
Makes sense
Yeah it's cliché, but the simplicity is what sells it. When i was a kid, i actually wanted to know more, because it's a new hero learning new stuff and meeting a whole a new world. Also the artstyle was really well done, maybe if it got the green light, butch could have looked for a writer.
It's so clishee i literally saw the exact same thing in RosarioXVampire, and that Manga was cheap wish fullfillment at it's lowest form (althrough i liked the idea of having my own stalker wich propably kept me going longer then i should have)
Who cares about that????
Very well put, it is cliche but not senseless.
I would also add that he is the first human to have joined them ever (and he never even went to school), so it is presumable thay everyone knows other species across the galaxy, and therefore have a basic understanding of each others and some shared cultural norms, while Crash has none other than he saved a princess who looks and acts nothing like them.

The voice acting for the most part, was solid. But there was a severe lack of creativity with most of the characters. It is a shame because there was a lot of wasted talent in this rejected pilot. Steven L. Marmel who also wrote this pilot, wrote for I.M. Weasel, Johnny Bravo, and Danny Phantom.

The only thing that I really disliked about the Crash Nebula special is that it started off at a brief moment in the climax right before beginning the episode. It is one of the tropes that I hate the most and there's no piece of media that used that trope without having me react with hostility.
It's called media res.
@@buster3041 I think some episodes of Fairly OddParents and Danny Phantom also start off like that. I know a DP episode the Fenton Menace does with Jazz narrating briefly before it cuts to the opening theme.

I honestly like the artstyle for Crash Nebula more than Danny Phantom it has a comic book look to it.
I can't really think of a game I love that lacks polish I would've said Super Smash Bros 4 Wii U or Pokémon X & Y but I don't love those games I like Pokémon X & Y but there are better Pokémon games and I didn't play Super Smash Bros 4 that much. I can think of a non video game example I use to like Doug when I watched it on TeenNick until I started to find the show boring.
How is smash 4 unpolished?? I mean i guess if you compare it to ultimate its less up there in specs obviously cuz it cne out earlier, but it was pretty poloshed for its time.
Yeah Smash 4 lacked a bunch of things, polish was not one of them. If there's any Smash game that actually lacks polish it would be Melee and arguably Smash 64.
Smash 4 might have been rendered pointless because of Ultimate and not offering anything big enough to be worth revisiting (compared to 64, Melee, Brawl), but an unpolished game? It isn't.
But at least Danny Phantom has a simpler and easier art style to not waste too much on animation. Danny Phantom is based off comic books but Crash Nebula and even Crimson Chin are straight up from a comic book with in a show
I actually like the animation and drawing style, I really wish this became an actual series and I actually wanna say Butch Hartman should revive it, but unfortunately given his recent “activity” he’d probably ruin it and turn it into another bland religious toon like the Garden.
I toatally never realized it was supposed to be a spin off, I was a preety oblivious child
I actually remember this episode, and thought that this was the first official pilot pitch of Danny Phantom. Same voice actor, similar art style, but despite the plot being different, I felt a sense of familiarity of it. Looking back on it now, this series really wouldn't have gone far, especially in today's standards. There are too many cliches and tropes here that everyone would find sickening. Not saying that having cliches and tropes will instantly make your stories or shows bad, they can work but it depends on how you write them. Take Robot and Monster from the show Robot and Monster. Robot was a snarky character with brains while Monster wasn't the brightest but had a big heart. The two were friends and get into goofy adventures together. Even though this kind of duo has been done countless of times, it's the way their relationship as well as how they react in a certain situations that make their pairing work and drives funny outcomes from it.
But even so, they still had more character and were far more fleshed out than the characters here. And I think the major problem with this series (Aside from the writing, the tropes and cliches and the rushed episode plots) are the characters we see. All of them are just mostly stereotypes with just a one dimensional personality trait. You have the basic bully, the love interest, the outraged sidekick, the goofy sidekick, the bratty sister. There really isn't much to see when watching these characters play out a scene. Once you see them, you pretty much know how they will react in each situation because of the traits or one trait, they posses. The bully just wants to tackle the main character around because he believes he's superior, even though he has no reason to be. Had they given us better personalities for each character, the show probably would have been worth watching. The characters could have even been fixed, like maybe give the bully a reason to pick on the human, because he sees humans are inferior or weak and would be the easiest to pick on because ever other alien on that bus and school would be stronger than him. Have the love interest be sassy to everyone, including the main character, but see her slowly begin to trust others as she gets closer to Crash and his friends. Even the main character, Crash... he is supposed to be your average stereotypical boy, but not even he's that. Again, he is supposed to prove he has heart, but he mostly just gets saved by his own ignorance or cause he has others by his side. If he's a farmer, make him have a the trait of always working the hardest, but sometimes he won't get the best results, and even when he doesn't, he uses that to push forward.
Now, I get that this is just a pilot and I know Butch has made far worst shows in his career, but if you can't even get the audience to like your main character, that is a big red flag that this series was doomed to fail. I am not even surprised this didn't become an official show, it lacked not only talent, but any actual work. This only proves that Butch has lost his touch as a writer and director of his own shows, and this should have been his sign to quit while he was ahead. Then again, I guess that wouldn't have stopped him from being the trash man we all know today. Personally, I believe this series could have been a success, if someone with actual talent and passion other than Butch took over production.
robot and monster is based
Fam you need to space out your paragraphs. Though you do have a point.
Stereotypes and not going beyond them is butch's biggest flaw in all his projects. What you see on the surface is what you get.
I think you did a better job explaining why the show wouldn't work than the video did. I usually like AlphaJay content but with this one, he's judging an entire show based on a single pilot as if it represents an entire season.
Box Of Cartoon awww, thanks, to be honest I just listened to what he said and put it in my own viewpoint. He isn’t wrong about the stereotypes and lack of character. I’m not saying that the show had to be complex for kids to like it, but even kids shows like adventure time, gravity falls, Steven universe and many others, especially in this time, have better fleshed out characters with more personality than this. I get that character growth and development isn’t what Butch is known for, but in a story plot like this, you kind of need it to see how this kid became such a legend today.
@@cosmok-1367 To be fair his biggest shows had and relied on 2 dimensional characters and even get praised to this very day.

If you ask me a Pilot is a pilot things were meant to build from it. So a pilot not exploring certain things is not a problem because the series is supposed to explore them. That said knowing Butch Hartman it wouldn’t (especially cause he doesn’t pay his artist even)
Pilots shouldn't just have stuff to be expanded on later. Maybe the first episode of the actual show, but the pilot should be self contained. Look at most pilots and they just focus on what's important. Why are all these cliched and uninteresting dynamics taking up time that could be used to show off the strengths of the show?

Inuyasha: The Secret of the Cursed Mask. A very short, and very flawed RPG. I liked it as a "what if" story, and I like the co-op techniques. I just feel it felt like they rushed to make it while the show was popular, and not take the time to expand upon it before release.
Not going to lie, it felt that you were trying way too hard to explain the problems this episode had almost like cinema sins on this one. Not ur best performance compared to your other works. I get that you dont like this episode due to its flaws and what it could have been but you have spent too much time complaining about pretty much everything especially the whole "aliens should feel alien towards each other" thing and the bit of the voice actor of the little sister shouldn't have sounded annoying to you when that was the whole point.
onthebay15 Eh the voice acting for the little girl should’ve been done better, but I do agree with the rest though. It just seemed like he was really irritated for no reason.
I thought a lot of it was silly. Because you can't show all that he wanted in a short episode. If it was picked up I'm sure it would have touched more on some of the issues he brought up.
Agreed while I agree that the show was bad, I still belive that Alpha Jay had a bit too much expectations for a pilot and it caused him to start nitpicking at things that wasn't really as big of a problem as he led on and looked a lot like someone just finding reasons to hate on something. Still a bad pilot though.
He's like this on every one of his vids I've seen. His takes are laughable and I only click these to see rundowns on shows I've never heard of that look interesting.
yes! i honestly thought i was the only one who got cinemasins vibes from this. Most of his critiques were overboard for something that was meant to be dumb. this video just came off as a little pretentious tbh.
The main thing I kept thinking of during this review is that it's a backdoor pilot- of course there's a bunch of thing they aren't able to answer, they have to get through it and sell the idea
Man, that's a shame. And I really like its art style too. As for the question of favorite games that are jank and that alone would turn away others, I'm a Sonic fan. Enough said.
I was just watching this yesterday and still was wishing it became a series it had potential
I knew I wasn't the only one who didn't like this episode.
I hated the episode because in the ending timmy is
Treat bad and no reason for it.
I didn't like this episode either
I like it, but not the ending.
What if Ben 10 franchise makes a Continuation Spinoff of No Watch Ben(From Omniverse) Goes to Plumbers' Academy and become Plumber hero. That would be a Cool idea. No watch Ben become a Han Solo, Star-Lord gunslinger hero.
So take Ben 10 but take away everything that made it Ben 10.
@@_V.Va_ sounds like a fan fic
"Okay guys I know that everyone loved the idea of a boy transforming into different creatures to tackle dangerous villains and situations, but what if he DIDN'T? "
It could work because we've seen Ben deal with stuff while not being transformed. But it'd have be a short series and put its best foot forward.
In all the seasons of Ben 10 I doubt anyone would say their favorite moment with ben came from a time he wasn't transformed.
Plumber Hero? Is he stomping and hammering his way through hordes of koopas or what?
Am I the only one who didn't know this was a pilot for a new show and thought that it was just another fairy odd parents episode?
Crash Nebula sucked because Invader Zim wasn't the main character.
It had potential. I would have watched a season or 2.
Same.
i remember when i first saw this on tv, i thought it was pretty neat. I think that this concept could have worked, but you're right the writing needed work. I still think that the show's character designs and art style is far better than fairy odd parents though.
I liked this episode as a kid and remember wishing they'd make a whole series spin off for crash nebula.
I remember really liking this episode as a kid. I loved the art style and the idea of a space themed cartoon, I don't think we had that around that time. I wish this got greenlit and fixed up because I actually think this concept and art is more interesting than Danny Phantom's.
Love the video, the Crash Nebula pilot was hard to find as a kid. I always forgot it was a Fairly Odd Parents episode. Also the character designs were the best part of the pilot
Honestly, I think you're putting too much thought into what is effectively a pilot. Of course it's not polished; it's a pilot! Could it be better if it was actually expanded into a show? Perhaps (it would be interesting to peer into the alternate universe where Crash Nebula had a show that lasted 3 seasons and Danny Phantom was the show within a show that had a pilot episode inside a FOP episode). It being a pilot isn't an excuse for being unpolished, but pilots are usually pretty rough when compared to the final product. When we ONLY have a pilot to look at, it is easy to judge but it makes me wonder about that potential you mention a few times, if this were a full series.
Also, I haven't seen this episode in YEARS but for some reason I remembered that space chicken was voiced by Richard Horvitz, that shit lodged in my brain
Look at Dexter's Laboratory, Courage the Cowardly Dog, Powerpuff Girls, Hell Fairly Oddparent. They're not polished, but they have purpose and direction. They want to tell a story and they do it, no fluff. Look at the first episode of Danny Phantom, they give you something simple but unique. If this got a good series, the pilot would still be incredibly generic.
it doesn't matter if its just a pilot or not, especially when in the end it becomes forgettable and rejected.
the pilot/first episode is supposed to set the tone of the show and give a good first impression.
when most of the audience can't get immersed due to the shallow plot and characters, its doomed to fail bc no one asked for more.
@@milkmatcha3698 not all pilots match the final product tho
@@milkmatcha3698 Geez, you act like it's the whole first season...

I like it back then, was a different animation and has some quality, maybe it needed a better script for characters but didn't care way back ago so it was entertaining to me. Not that is the best but it worked out I guess.
I can’t hear the name Sprig without thinking about Amphibia.
This episode is a blip out of the crevasses of my memory. I barely
remember it but know I've seen it
A few times.
A game that I loved and it wasn’t that polished you say.
Let me introduce you to the Ed, Edd & Eddy video game.
Which one. There were 3.
The mis-eddventures on ps2?
2:10 The Earth Defence Force games; just all of them. Their repetative; incredibly dumb and could really do with some I frames. I still love every stupid B movie second of them.
Agreed. The raunchy starship troopers feel in game form is just great.
A man of culture i see
and indeed, EDF are very very grindy and repetitive
Unpolished games I like:
Spongebob the Movie game, there were some broken, unfair aspects of it but with that we got plenty of good levels and music.
Shadow the Hedgehog:
If you ignore how badly they made shadow an edge lord, you’ve got a game with decent platforming and combat.
Some levels reeeeeeally suck though.
@@AkameGaKillfan777 That Ark mission and finding all the artificial chaos was a nightmare. Then again I only rented it...
So you're mad about the main villain being stronger than his lacky even though that's how most villains in stories usually operate.
With the main villain usually being presented as being fully capable of messing with the main protagonist or killing them, depending on what parameters the story set for itself, all on their own but have lackeys to do the dirty work simply because they don't feel the desire to personally "take care" of the main protagonists.
That's not a new or abnormal thing and if the lackey in this episode was stronger than the main villain we'd question why he was even a lackey. Because in most other stories that fail at this, and have that as a flaw, that's the question that pops up and it seems like you want the main villain in this story to be weaker than the lackey for some reason.
It's a classic dynamic; the weaker kids usually do hang out with the stronger ones so it makes sense that the main baddie WAS stronger than his toadies but the question set up was HOW he was stronger and then we find out why. There's also a little detail that I noticed that would have added even more reason for the kid to want a team of his own; notice how long it took him to transform and HOW he had to do it. It wasn't something where he could INSTA morph. It did take a while and if someone had distracted him or punched him at the right moment, he would have gone down for the count before he was done transforming so yes. It makes sense that he had some boydguards on his sides when he's in his weaker form UNTIL he felt he had to go into his power-upped form.
@@SuperCosmicMutantSquid That's a good reason for him to have a lackey as well. And if the pilot got picked up for a series or another pilot, and it was anyone other than butch writing it, I bet that would've been used as a motive.
But butch wouldn't do that.
@@SuperCosmicMutantSquid regarding Ving, the way I would have gone about it is that instead of super strength Ving's Species have potent Psionic abilities like telekinesis, levitation, Pyrokinesis, creating Psychic Barriers, and a bunch of various other psionic based powers, the catch is though said powers require a lot of concentration and his body is physically very frail meaning that one solid blow to him and he goes down like a sack of potatoes.
Actually, the Rockwell and Ving dynamic can work, look at Vegeta and Nappa. Yes, Nappa looks more like the strong man, but the smaller Vegeta is the real threat
I always thought this episode was made to ridicule bad sci-fi comics
This is trippy. I didn't remember this was a thing, but I clearly watched it as a child, because I remember the designs of these characters very well. It's honestly baffling to me.
When he says "This naturally occurring source of fuel has been in our family for 5 generations", I don't think he was saying the turd he handed his son has been around for that long. It certainly wouldn't have flies around it after all that time. It would have crumbled into dust (or fertilizer).
Regardless of the writing quality and all that I gotta say, the animation and art style is pretty damn good, I easily prefere this look over Butches other shows
Wait, the rumour is that this show looks too similar to Sky High??? Even as a kid I only ever saw this as being a rip off of Buzz Lightyear, how were they more concerned about Sky High?

I get a lot of the points you discussed, but I still think this show could've worked if it became a full series. Now of course, pilots themselves should start off strong so that audiences would anticipate a full series (Infinity Train comes to mind). However, if the pilot itself is underwhelming but still possesses potential, then making it an official series (if it gets green lit, of course) could be seen as a second chance to improve the concept.
This was how I felt towards the pilot of "Summer Camp Island," since I liked the laidback tone and how it discussed problems that kids could relate to, but found the story's execution to be all over the place and feeling unnerved by the living objects. But once CN announced that they were making SCI a new show, I hoped they would expand on its concept and write stronger stories for it. And luckily, at least for me, the main show succeeded in that.
So who knows. Maybe this "Crash Nebula" spinoff could've done better as a show, even with its clichéd pilot.
Fam plenty of pilots are terrible and make me wonder how they even got greenlit at all. But they became some of the better received series of their eras.
Even for shows I like.
And infinity train had a lame pilot not a good one.
Crash nebula is a good pliot in my opinion.
K
Yeah I like it too
Sad it didn't become a show, it would've been our replacement when Danny Phantom ended, or at least for me it would've
Elaborate
Oh well, at least Butch Hartman got to have his action cartoon with Danny Phantom, a show that definitely needs a reboot so at the end Butch Hartman won.
It had real potential to be a great series.
They could've made it into a comic book series at least.
I think another good idea for a FOP spinoff (and Butch Hartman also mentioned this in his podcast) is Dimmsdale Days, about the different residents of Dimmsdale. Could have had great character-driven stories. A Fairy World spinoff would have been great too.
I forgot about the fact that this show existed
Execpt it technically doesn't.
I like the change in art style in Crash Nebula. It looks very distinct.
Actually a point I noticed was the fact he was the first human to ever attend this school while other various aliens have already been doing so. This would most likely explain why all the species were connected in some way and he was the one off.
The touching family moment joke is actually pretty funny, good subversion of how you'd expect him to react even though nothing else makes anything about it makes sense.
I think this review is a key example as to why you shouldn't pause-play nitpick media you're meant to watch in full first. A few things you've brought up are answered minutes later -- like why aren't the aliens equally afraid of each other? The "charity case" comment implies Earth is an unsophisticated galactic backwater and that the other aliens are already familiar with the idea of other sapient species.
I feel like this spinoff show could've worked, we could've maybe had another Danny Phantom on our hands given the fact if this had been given more room to grow. The character designs and styles are kinda neat too.
I guess the aliens bullying crash for being human would be like the equivalent of a kids bullying a foreign exchange student
Except if every kid came from a different country anyway and they all just really hated Americans for some reason.
