There is an extra letter L in about 6:10. I'm sorry about this!
Dear all! So many of you have told me that you want to learn Finnish or that you have already learned this song in Finnish. It's an honour to me, and to help you with your aims I decided to make some new videos. This is the first clip in a series of tutorial videos for learning Ieva's polka in Finnish. I hope you find it useful! I will make a similar clip for every verse.
The language in this song is not literary language, but the Eastern dialect from Savo district. So this is not the kind of language you would learn in "Finnish for beginners" course. :-)
I have made the whole thing by myself and I'm aware of the fact, that it's not professional quality in any way. But I'm learning new things all the time and hope you are too. Have fun and let me know how you are doing with your Finnish studies! :-)
EDIT!
OK, here's the story of the first verse. My translations are not exhaustive, but give a rough idea of the meaning of the words. The text is written in dialect, so there are words that can't be translated unambiguously. But I hope you get the idea of the story, which is told in a humorous and down to earth style. Lyrics by Eino Kettunen.
FIRST VERSE:
There is a dancing night going on in a barn in a small village. The boy hears the drifting sound of polka and he wants to go dancing. Now, Ieva is the one he wants to take dancing, but her mother is keeping an eye on Ieva. She fools her and gets to dance with our lad anyway. The boy says that Ieva and he just ignore restrictions and they dance from one side of the dance floor to the other. Probably for hours. :-) Then comes the chorus which doesn't mean anything except the last word would be something like slowly or little by little.
5:50 The whole verse

Reminds me of that one episode of Friends
especially when Joey buy a tape for his cassette player
tape goes like "We're now count from 1 to 5... un, deux, trois, quatre, cinq!"
and Joey goes like "eh, blu, bla, flu, fleg!"
and the tape goes "good job!"
"thank you!" Joey replies proudly to the cassette player

@@HanniAutere Do the other three people who sang levan polka with you have CZcams channels as well?
@@HanniAutere Your accent is good when you speak English, you deserve more subscribers
@@Surya-jv4ls yes.. Search on yt, Ievan Polkka.. You will see they sang again
@@dragonbeastgaming9363 I already found the song I am not able to find the other three people who sang along with Hanni Autere
Do you know how sweet you look and sound? You give me and my wife the impression that you are a wonderful and kind and fun person. Thank you.
Thank you so much! :-)
She seems so calm and relaxed. She's like that ideal elder sister I'll never have.
Here it is finally! :-) I would appreciate it if you gave me some constructive feedback concerning the contents. I'm definitely not a Finnish teacher nor a professional TV host, but I tried to be clear and positive. :-) I hope you enjoy! I'll make the rest of the song after I get to hear from you if this style is ok or useful.
@@fatihbt Thank you! :-)
Your style of teaching the pronounciation is very good.. you make it lot easier to understand and repeat. Please continue this series..
@@pritishpatjoshi9348 Thank you, I'm so glad to hear that. I will continue soon! It's much easier to do the rest of the verses. :-)
Finnish pronounciation is tough. Your smile and attitude are very encouraging though, so definitely a great plus here!
@@chaelipark Thanks for your feedback! I will think about making more specific pronunciation videos. :-) I don't know what pinning is, can you help me with that?
For one who is unable to recognize her...She is that Red Skirt Girl in original song video!
If you didn't notice yet, there are more tutorials in here, have a look! :-) I'll make some more, too. So stay tuned!
You're a really good teacher. I need to learn a language from a nation close to Finland, but there aren't any good teachers. With someone like you, I think I'd be able to learn.
@@StaticImage Thank you! =)
I'm from the middle east, and I'm so happy that there are people like you, I'm so proud of your personality 💐🌸🌼 My appreciation
I listened to this growing up and would always try to sing along, 8 years later I have finally learned the actual lyrics. Something special and your personality is glowing
I’m so high right now, idk how I got to this video but I ain’t leavin! I’m invested and gotta learn this now!
Fun fact: Finnish is one of the very few languages in Europe that is not Indo-European. Indo-European is the most dominant language family that spans across most of Europe, the Americas, the Persian plateau, and the Northern Indian Subcontinent. Most of us find Finnish very unique and magical because it is part of a rare language family (Uralic) that is not very well known or heard by the people other than the native speakers.
Wow, you have a lot of basic info there! :-)
@@HanniAutere Thanks for the reply Hanni. :) Yes, I like learning about different languages. The Ievan Polkka song introduced me to Finnish. Such a beautiful language!
@@தமிழோன் :-)
I'm Hungarian, and Finnish language should be closely related to the magyar (Hungarian) language.
But to tell you the truth, I can not understand a world of it...:D
@@lajkatajka I know, I don't understand Hungarian... :-)
this is so wholesome. after all these years seeing Hanni embrace the internet really warms my heart
How can you not have the best school system in the World with this kind of teachers and people!
Thank you. :-)
The cutest lyrics tutorial i ever seen
Thanks! =)
I practiced and tried to sing with you. Accidentally summoned a demon. Now we're both learning.
Great video I really like that Folk song
I practice the entire 6:33 minute video here, go back to watch the original and it's just 15 seconds.
Guess, I should just stick to "pol pol pol pol"
:-) Really? Is the verse so short?! :-) I didn't know...
My goal for 2022... learning this song by heart in fluent Finnish.
You can do it! =)
So, finally I'll be able to sing properly instead of summoning a demon everytime!
Anyway keep up the series👍
WOW! 3000 subscribers! What a Christmas present! Thank you all! :-D
@@chaelipark Yes, I'm aware of the monetising possibilities. I'll have to proceed in that field soon. Thank you for your support!
You deserve even more!
Love u teacher!
this is actually a great introduction to Finnish phonetics, not all that difficult as ä, ö, y (ü) and h (ch) all sound like their German counterparts.
I may have a bad voice but my determination to learn this song is greater than you can imagine.
I'm proud of you! =)
Hanni, I heard this song when I was like 12yrs old and fell in love with it even though I dont understand a word. Now I’m 31yrs old and I keep listening to it from time to time, and now im trying to learn it, thanks to you :)
Keep it 2x speed and listen this 05:51

I’m Japanese high school student .
I love IEVA’S POLKA!
I want to be able to sing this song soon!
I’m practicing to learn Finnish because a long time ago I heard this song some where and it was always stuck in my memories but I forgot the name of it so like 5 years later I figured out it and now I’m here-
Im also taking notes how to sing this song :D
100.000 views! AMAZING! :-D Thank you for being part of this!
I feel like this was made to shade all those ‘covers’ of Ieva’s Polka that just use gibberish lyrics instead of the real Finnish lyrics. I love it.
There is gibberish always, as I sing my solo with nonsense language. =)
I swear Hanni is the nicest person she knows how frustrated we get because we can't sing along :D
Aaaargh! There goes the next few weeks of my life... if I'm lucky! Thank you ever so much for doing this, my wife adores this song and I'm determined to blow her mind by being able to sing along to it! :D She's going to freak out!!!
Go for it! =D
You have no idea how much I've wished this. As someone who was introduced to this song by some anime meme from the mid 2000s as well as the hatsune miku remix, I've just been completely enamored by this song since I was a small child, especially Loituma's adaptation. Even though I'm simply an american girl, who in no way is finnish, because I was introduced to this song at such a young age, it has grown to be extremely nostalgic and meaningful to me, as strange as that may seem. And so to learn how to sing it properly just feels very cathartic to me.
She is soooo pretty!!!
To be honest, I do not feel that I am receiving the tutorial from you through the video. Rather, I feel that I am learning directly from you face to face through the way you communicate with the viewer and your charming smile. Much respect to you, Hanni.
As a spanish speaker its easy to pronounce it 😊
Hi I am from India and I was a fan of this song since years.. I have tried to sing it completely multiple times and sort of gave up it was too tough with a lot of tongue twisting Finnish words .. arrive 2020 and I have listened to the song over a hundred times and practiced the chorus parts going through the live videos on repeat .. but the main lyrics were still difficult.. Thank you very much for this Tutorial it will help me practice and get the main lyrics right .. Hope you all are Healthy and safe.. Love your music..
I'm happy to hear that this is helpful for you. :-)
I’m still looking at both the videos form 2020 and 1995. You all are aged like fine wine. May be happy and healthy life is the reason. No wonder Finland is the happiest country in the world ha ha.
Maybe it's music that keeps us going. :-)
I hope that you know that you, your band, and your work is loved the world over.
Im going to learn this song so I can sing it to kids when we put them to sleep every night. I just hope that I dont make some silly mistake in pronunciation and accidentally summon a demon...
Oh, Im so excited, thank you!
I love the way you Sing "Hilipati hilipati hilipati hillaa,
Hilipati hilipati hilipampaa"
I always wondered why Lauri Vuohensilta from Hydraulic Press Channel always pronounced it Hüdraulic Press Channel. Now I know. My grandmother was full-blooded Finn, so it's cool to see the language and culture of the Mother Land.

I replay this part so many times. So calming
:-)
As a brazilian I gotta tell you how pleasant it is to sing along this song.
Finnish is so beautiful
Seeing you in 1995 with all the other members performing this song and seeing you now blows my mind. Makes me think woahh
:-)
The hero we needed has arrived, just in time for christmas!
Dear Hanni,
thank you for your tutorials - we have watched many recordings of Ievan Polkka during learning the text and these are the best. It was a brilliant idea to publish them!
It worked, we sang Ievan Polkka in Finnish at our concert with songs in different languages :)

after 25 years of this song.. you still looking beautiful...❤❤❤
Im 33 and I wanted to learn to sing this since i was 16. I got drunk today and I dont even know how i remembered it but I googled "the girl with the leek song" then I remembered the original and then I added slow to the google search and here you are. In all your glory, teaching me how to sing it. Thank you my beautiful lady. People like you are what keeps me going. I love you.
Same with me .. Im 35 and wanted this since i was 15... Im so happy 😁
This is the best. I can actually sing the verse with a reasonable amount of accuracy!
Cool! I'm proud of you! =)
Actually you don't even know how legendary you became after you sang that song ...it's my favourite song on CZcams !!...hats off to you !
Love from india 🇮🇳🇮🇳
I think 'pol pol pol' is the best I can do lol. Stay healthy, Hanni! :-)
That's very important part of the song! :-)
You are teaching it is like a mother. I love your compassionate voice
Dear Hanni, as a native speaker of Hungarian, I find your tutorial particularly interesting and educative. Although Finnish is not understandable for a Hungarian speaker, strangely enough, it does sound like Hungarian. Thanks for this wonderful lesson!
I was always wondering if there is any mutual intelligibility between Hungarian and Finnish.:) Most unique European languages, I'd say...
As a Finn, it was a shock for me to visit Hungary for the first time. I had been listening to Germanic and Slavic languages for a week, and suddenly on the train from Prague to Budapest I heard this group of girls speak something that sounded.... normal! Like I should have understood what they said, but didn't, and yet it sounded so cozy and familiar. She said something to the effect of "körökö" or so, and it felt so right after hearing "strshlng" and "vtrshk" all week!
It was extra trippy because Hungary doesn't at all look like Finland. It was very beautiful, though!
This is a legend Internet Anthem
Quarantine brought me here. I've heard this song for a long time. I haven't think about learning to sing this song before but the quarantine.
Who could possibly dislike this? I mean, seriously?
The people who are upset she’s giving away gorgeous Finnish secrets to gorgeous Finnish songs.
Thank you so much for this! Finnish is such a beautiful language i wish i could learn and im so glad I can at least sing the first song ive ever heard in it.
OMG ITS HANNI HERSELF! Its good to see you making new type of content, Can't wait for more

I have so much respect for people like you. 🎼
Oh my god! It actually works. I've learned it in less than 30 mins. I'm so proud of my self. Going to get me a beer right now!
It's better if you grab one before. It took me only 24 minutes :)

But I guess it will take a long time to completely learn it
Hanni, you saved 2020.
I’ve been butchering this song for years trying to repeat what I could hear. It’s so helpful to hear you break down the Finnish so patiently. I think I could get this down with some practice. Thank you for taking the time to teach us.
Your voice is still as graceful as you sang it originally....years ago!!
I don't know Finnish but feel connected with music.
Thank you!! I love this song and now I hope to be able to sing it as well! Greetings from Mexico!
Are you the loving and caring Grandma in good old fairy tales ^^
P/s: you have the voice of an angel, not just in songs but in normal speeches as well. Wish you all the best!
Well, here in Finland quite few people are grandparents at this age. =)
i now know the lyrics and no one can stop me now lol

Much tenderer voice than I expected!
I loved it, you explain everything with a calm, it makes easy to understand, thanks you!
Hi from Brazil 🇧🇷
As a Turkish speaker, pronouncing Finnish is kind of easy for me. It is also a language I would say pronounced like it is written once you get the sounds the characters make
Exactly! That's why it's so easy to read it! =)
I sing ievan polkka on discord repeatedly, the next day all of my friend sing the same song😂 thanks to this tutorial, it made me easier to remember the lyrics and influence my friend to sing ievan polkka, greetings from Yogyakarta 🇮🇩
I like it how this became a meme and at the same time relaxing.
=)
Hey, I usually dont say these ... But amazing way of teaching .. and your face says you are actually interested to teach rather than just for the views. I can clearly say you are doing it out of passion.
My respects lady. May you achieve greater heights

I love it that people love this amazing song so much that they go out of their way to learn how to sing it correctly.
You're so kind while teaching! I loved it!
This is absolutely amazing! I was thinking of the history of this song and just how far it has come with us through our technological evolution. Its kind of mind blowing! Thank you so much
thank you so much.
the pronunciation is easy for us slovaks, but to sing it so quickly is not. anyway, nice song, nice language, nice coutry - the things which make me visit your beautiful country, after this pandemic situation. keep doing....
