Ever since the TV show "Justified" premiered on the FX Network in 2010, fans have asked what kind of hat Timothy Olyphant wore in his portrayal of Deputy U.S. Marshall Raylan Givens and where they can get one. Some debate and controversy has surrounded those questions. In this video, we attempt to provide the definitive answer to which hat Raylan Givens wore.
I recently purchased a beautiful never worn Luskeys Supreme silverbelly from an older gentleman . He told me it was hand made and a very nice hat. It appeared to have never been shaped so I took it to my western ware and the hatter could not believe what he was seeing. There's no x markings anywhere and I asked why and if this was just a felt hat . He said my new never been worn hat was at least 50 years old and was definitely beaver , why not marked He did not know but from the feel he said it was at least a 20 X, he just kept repeating that this is a very nice hat . His jaw dropped when I told him the old gentleman was asking 25$ but he'd let me have it for 20$ , I gave him his asking price anyway but believe me I'll make it up to him the next time I see him.
Regarding the shots of the buckle being seen on both sides of the hat, having worked in TV post production for over 40 years, I’ve seen all kinds of mistakes being filmed. I wouldn’t be surprised if the actor did wear the hat the wrong way and nobody on the set caught it. Occasionally shots are also “flipped” in the editing room. BTW, good catch!
Airport: grocery store: school; library: Anywhere and everywhere that I cross paths with the public, hats stand out. A hat like the Stetson Marshall always gets a second glance.
Your channel was made for people just like me. We do not change with the times. Chase fads. Place ourselves with the “younger crowd.” We enjoy time honored traditions. Simple, rugged yet refined. Your presentations are always a welcome. Thank you, sir.
A wonderfully informative video on RGs hat. Justified was among the greatest shows, up there with Lonesome Dove.
Justified IMO was and is the greatest TV series ever.PERIOD!!! Wanna argue about it? Meet me in Harland Kentucky with a gallon of 'shine and we'll see who's the last man standing.
Great video. A couple of things to note. In the early scenes where the buckle switches sides, if he had the hat on backwards the actual buckle would also be reversed. There’s a scene in season 4, Episode 13 (Ghosts) where Raylan gets into the ambulance with Winona and takes his hat off. You can very clearly see the Baron logo inside the hat. I’m pretty sure they used the Stetson at the end of the gunfight scene because they didn’t want to put a hole in the Baron hat because they still needed it for filming / reshoots.
I did say “At least at the very end of the series” they used the Stetson Marshall and that it’s obvious they used multiple hats.
Just like in tv/films that have a featured car, they use several different ones for different reasons. That Baron hat is 100% beaver, so let’s call the Stetson the stunt hat.
Im getting ready to purchase the same hat, my question is the hat alredy shaped or do i have to get it shaped @@historynerdsmancave7567
I was wearing that hat for 20 years before Justified's first episode. I wear one daily still, but I have a Stetson Marshall hat as well. The hat I wear was just a silver belly Stetson that I once had cleaned by Paris Hatters in San Antonio, TX, where I live. The band was my idea because the original felt hat band was very subdued and I wanted something that stood out.
I bought mine when the series first came out. Love the hat. Had to have the brim reshaped so it looked like the one he wore. The hat comes with a lot of curl to the brim, had it steamed and flattened out.
Very nice video. Thanks for sharing all the history.
That tracks with the backstory of the hat that is given in the show. In one episode someone asks Raylan why he wears the hat. He basically just says that he saw it in a store and he liked it. With that kind of backstory I think it would be more likely to be a Stetson rather than a custom made thousand dollar plus hat.
Don't know why your channel came up in my feed, but I'm glad it did. Longtime fan of the FX series Justified and the Raylon Givens character. You've a new subscriber good sir and I'm looking forward to seeing what your future content will be. Take care and God Bless...
I just finished watching Lonesome Dove a day ago, must be why I got it in my feed
I wear a Dollar Store straw hat, rim down. Noticed that people are more tempted to talk to me when I wear it.
What can I say.. Being soft on the eye, I can wear anything.
as a young Texan, I needed to see this
Another explanation for the buckle flip is that editors in post production flipped the film for some reason. One reason was to get continuity with the next scene. This was necessary because scenes aren’t filed in order.
Came here to say this too. The way to verify is to freeze the frame and look for other details that are reversed, such as jacket or shirt buttons. Men's clothing is always left over right.
Also, does Tim's face have any kind of asymmetry? You may be able to detect it in the freeze frame. Admittedly this might not be as easy as it would with, say, Gabriel Macht.
I just want to say that you're putting out great content keep it up.
Rest easy because in City Primeval Raylan will be wearing the hat he was famous for, weather it’s the Marshall or Baron’s, it’ll be the original Raylan! Come on, did you really think they’d not have him wear the hat everyone recognizes him for? Even people who haven’t watched the original show recognize that hat from promotional material. No way they weren’t going back to that! I didn’t like Boon’s hat either, but it didn’t look like a 70s pimp, it was just different. I do agree they should’ve had it be the hat he wore in the books though. That would’ve been a respectable touch. Can’t wait for the new series. It’s sad we won’t get Boyd, but from what I understand the new cast is pretty amazing.
Nice video. Gives me a reason to go over to the Hatco, manufacture of Stetson and Resistol in Garland, outlet store and find one for cheap. I get all of my hats from them.
I bought one of these hats two years ago for $130. The pictures you showed of the two hats, you can clearly see the belt tapers to a smaller width as it gets to the buckle, on one version. My Stetson belt is the same width all the way around. Love the hat.
That’s why I said they must’ve used multiple hats, but you can’t discredit the matching sweatbands on the Marshall and the hat in the Justified finale.
Thank you for sharing info about a great hut and show.
My very first factory job at 16 yrs old was in a hat factory in Adamstown,Pa. learned how to steam and block them! We made white cowboy hats that were beautiful! This was in 1958, and I was making $1.25 an hour!! Now, at 80 yrs old, I'm making about the same on SS!! 😆 lol
Great video!! I ended up going down the rabbit hole of trying to figure out Raylans hat back in 2020. Baron Hats was a little too pricey for me, however Knudsen Hats down in California had their modified version of the Stetson Marshal that was a little cheaper and a few months wait. I ended up getting the 10x beaver blend to replace my cheap Silverado wool hat. After 3 years of rain and abuse, the hat still looks and feels amazing. Paying a little extra to get the “king of the nerds” Stetson is WELL worth it! I suspect this hat will last a very very long time!
Thanks for the kind words, and thanks for reminding me about Knudsen Hats. I've been meaning to spend some time poking around their website. Appreciate you for watching!
@@historynerdsmancave7567 Knudsen say though the actual hat is a hand-modified Stetson 6x beaver...so more confusion....
I really enjoyed hearing the history.
Just came across the channel, very interesting. I subscribed, liked and look forward to more.
Ya need to order quality hats from Catalina Hatters in Bryan Texas. That’s a real hat.
First time I've come across your channel and I believe this will very dangerous for me. LOL. Your suggestion for the Open Road transition at the end of the series would have been awesome btw.
My dad's oldest sister died a couple of months ago. She was 103. There was a small cottage on her property not far from the main house. It was used as a guest house for a long time and in the last 40 years it was used as storage. Her daughter, my cousin Maria was cleaning out the cottage and came across an old locked trunk. My cousin called me and said I could have it if I hauled it away. I agreed.
Once I got it home and opened I found a bag of gold jewelry that weighed about half a pound. My uncle's old Smith and Wesson .38 Special Revolver. A vintage Levis Denim Jacket in mint condition.
And my uncle's Stetson Open Road hat. He bought this hat a few years after he arrived home from WWII. He only wore it to Mass on Sundays. It is as close to new condition as an almost 80 year old hat can get. Once fall arrives, I'm wearing this hat. Gonna get it brushed and cleaned and ready.
Great video. Thanx for sharing.
Another really really Goode one..thank you
I always wondered what brand hat uncle Joe Carson wore on petticoat junction, always looked neat to me.
Thank you
It's the same hat in both those shots, and it's not being worn backwards because the buckle has the right orientation, it's because the negative is reversed, ...like looking in a mirror when your right side appears to be your left.
It wasn't just the model of hat. They reworked the brim to be much flatter than the standard cowboy hat brim.
I didn't see the JBS branding iron pin on your hat anywhere. Did I just miss it? My old Stetson crown has the front pinch sewn up, has a non descript liner in it but it still has the branding iron. I enjoyed this segment. Thanks for sharing.
The Stetson Marshall does not have a hat pin because it has the buckle set. It’s also supposed to look like the Raylan Givens hat, which did not have a hat pin.
Northwest Hatters, has a Raylan and all Beaver for under 700$ They also do 50 blend and I think a all bunny felt for around 200 I guess. I sure have a hard time steaming 4x, I can work 6x or better. My head requires me to shape em when I buy off the rack. I cant watch Justified enough!! love it and Deadwood! The world was a better when watching good western movies!
I love your hat knowledge, in my youth I was a hatter myself, , I just bought the Marshall and am looking forward to wearing it, by the way, I thought the bucket always went on the left side of hat for men , right side for women, by the way I'm assuming this hat is a wool blend, ]like there old 2x hats,
I would argue that in the show it was a Stetson Carson that he wore for the most part.
Edit: Caught your second video on this debate and you mention the Carson!
History, Hats and Bourbon … dude, I’m sorry but you just described every woman who fantasizes about going to the Kentucky Detby 🤣🤣🤣. That said, awesome channel.
The Hemp Open Road is my summer hat. It holds no heat at all. The wool Route 66 is for winter.
I have a Stetson Marshall also. I bought it because of Justified, it's a good looking hat.
A modern day western. Loved the show and your video.
Now THAT is a bad ass hat ! The band alone is awesome! Wear it in Good Health !
Using the Stetson as a "stunt hat" makes sense. They'd have to remove the lining in order to rig the squib for the bullet hole.
A very nice hat! I'm partial to the Conagher myself.
I get my hats at the Stetson factory in St Joe MO, 30-40X , and the hat a are fit to my head.
Thanks for that information as I write this Justified Primeval has been released. On the website for that Marshall hat it's now $159.
but i don't understand their sizing they say Free size. I didn't hear you mention the size?
No such size exists, so I’ve got no cottonpickin’ idea what it means either…
Just recently found your channel and love the videos. Appears the Stetson Marshall can’t be purchased anymore. Any other suggestions for getting a Raylan hat that isn’t $1,000?
The Stetson Marhsall can be found if you search via Google and other sites. There are a few currently for sale on eBay and Mercari, as well. If you can't find one in your size, the Stetson Carson is an almost identical hat that was also used during the filming of Justified. I believe I discussed that in the follow-up video I posted about the Marshall.
I just bought one from a local western shop the other day, they can be found just gotta look hard enough
My favorite hat is a Stetson Pure Beaver Stratoliner. I love Stetson.
I think I'll try to get one of these for the coming spring (3/4) months from now
I didn't know Boon's hat was a FEDORA, considering how he thought of himself as a modern-day old west fast-draw gunslinger. I also read that OLYPHANT had BOON's hat custom-made for himself... and I doubt Timothy Olyphant would wear a Fedora and NOT a Western Era Cowboy Hat. Olyphant is very secretive about who made the custom "Dead Man's Victory" hat and what it is called. A Fedora might work for HARRISON'S INDIANA JONES - But it does not work for OLYPHANT'S, Raylan GIVENS.
Also, an XXXXXX custom-made fur felt Stetson runs between $5,000 and $10,000 dollars. I read somewhere, OLYPHANTS custom-made "BOON" hat cost around 10K. That would be one hell of a Fedora if that's the case.
It's well-documented and confirmed by the show's costume designer that the hat used in the majority of scenes of the TV show was a Carson with modified brim.
Watch my follow-up video on the Marshall which has information directly from the Justified costume department. It’s on my channel. Thanks for watching.
The buckle on the right side of his head is probably due to the scene being flipped in editing. Used to happen all the time in the 60s and 70s when televisions were low resolution (Star Trek was notorious for it) but very rare with modern high def TVs. Still, 99.9% of viewers would never notice it.
I loved Justified. They probably removed the silk lining to "greek" it. It is easier to remove than the sweat band.
Looking Good! Just like him! Thank you, J
at 12:51 with you wearing the hat and him, his is much flatter, no comparisons to me just same color
Nice looking lid!!
Raylan will be wearing his old hat in the justified prime evil. they were showing set photos
Nice hat! Looking good.
I have this hat and love it
I bought a silverbelly 4x Carson and had it reshaped to match the one Olyphant wore in the pilot episode. Also had a quarter inch removed from the brim to bring it to a 3.5. I really like the Marshal, but think the ranch tan is too dark and the brim is just a bit too big to be what Givens wore, at least in that first season. I also added the exact leather band and buckle set they used
I’m working my way through all five seasons of Justified in anticipation of the revival series, and you can tell that the hat evolved from the first season to the last. Since the sweatband in the final episode clearly reads “San Angelo Collection” just like the Marshall’s, it’s obvious that’s the hat that was used, but I’m betting multiple hats, likely including the Stetson Carson, were used at varying times between season one and season five. Since Raylan Givens is a deputy U.S. marshal, I also have a sneaking suspicion that the Stetson Marshall was likely produced to be specifically promoted in conjunction with Justified, but some moron in the marketing department did not know that it was supposed to be spelled “Marshal,” like federal marshal, not “Marshall,” like someone’s name.
Where did you get the band?
Awesome hat, my man! 👍🏻
I think they did use more than one hat. Sometimes the brim looks smaller that at other times. Like a Stetson Carson sometimes then the bigger Marshall at other times.
I'm a long time Stetson guy. If you look at the hat band...the one you have is different from the one the Given character had. Whether that came from Barron or not is a good question. The tip end of the band is narrow, almost as if it were too small, a long way from the buckle. The Stetson hat band isn't that way. When you see the buckle set on the right side of the hat it presents a question. If he had the hat on backwards then the belt tip would be facing front, but it isn't. Was the hat band just put on "upside down" or is the image reversed? Hmmm. In the shootout scene with Boone, Given's hat lands with the crown up when Given's goes down. But the next shot shows it upside down and then you can see the XXXX in the hat band as you mentioned. I didn't like seeing Givens wearing Boones hat at the end, instead of getting a new Stetson. But, that's the way of the world. Thanks for your video!
Can someone provide a link where you can purchase this hat? I could not find it on Stetson's website. Thank you.
I bought mine from Outland USA - www.outlandusa.com/p/stetson-mens-marshall-ranch-tan-7-58
LOLOL "he looks like a 1970s pimp from the Beretta TV show" - that cracked me up. Honestly, that's a really nice fedora he's wearing, but fashion aside, I totally agree with you that it was a huge missed opportunity for him to not put on an Open Road. I appreciate the opinion and the good sense of humor 👍
Stetson made the marshal after the show came out. In the pilot he wore a Stetson baron. The marshal did make an appearance in the shoot out scene with Boone in season 6.
7:35 Hollywood will also flip their camera shots, for instance, if they shot the character walking to the left but wanting him walking to the right, they will simply edit the picture to just mirror or flip the shot the other way.
Does it have any blood spatter on it?
the scenes youre referring to where the hat band is on the other side may very well be just that the image is mirrored. in other words, in editing it may have worked better if raylan walked off to the left at the end of a scene, rather than to the right... for the upcoming scene.
The Justfied hat was made by Baron’s Hats in Los Angeles. They also made Timothy’s Seth Bullock hat for Deadwood.
Clearly you didn’t watch the video. He stated that almost immediately.
Clearly you didn’t watch until the end because he stated it was the Stetson that was used.
@@KnivesInTheMoon No, he stated that it was a Stetson they used to film the last scene in which they put a pullet through a $110 vs. a $1,100 hat.
To be honest don't think he wore that cheap hat all last few seasons think about it they can drill a hole in a $1100 hat or a $175 hat so you may be misleading everyone on that fact plus the hat Timothy wore best I can read on it was a 3.5 inch brim and reshaped like the buffalo drifter series and the bands are slightly different the one he had got narrow at the corner before tapering off to the buckle
Stetson Marshall is a good looking hat!! 👍
Just a thought on the 4x Stetson in the final scene of the series. Maybe the Stetson was a "stunt" hat and they didn't want to put a hole in the expensive one???
I can't find it for sale on their website.
I bought mine on sale here - www.outlandusa.com/p/stetson-mens-marshall-ranch-tan-7-12?q=Stetson%20Marshall
I think they used this hat for the shot scene because of it not being his actual hat from that other maker and it’s cheaper so they could put a hole in it that hat in that last scene is obviously brand new as there are no sweat stain on the hat band
The satin lining bears the registered trademark "John B. Stetson". That cannot be displayed commercially without written permission of the trademark assignee, which would involve lawyers. And $$. The Loot. 💰💰. Long Green.
Well the hat does look good on you, that's all I'm saying other than I really enjoyed this video.
I saw you on TV, you and your hat...
Lookin good hoss ! 🫵👍🥃
The Givens' hat has the brim nearly flat all around and not curled up on the sides.
Good looking hat but you need a hat with a higher crown. Consider getting it reshaped to a single crease. or maybe a pinch.
Agree completely, they dropped the ball with Raylan adopting Boone's hat. The fedora worked for Boone, but did not work AT ALL for Raylan Givens. The idea of using that hat exchange as an opportunity to bring the Open Road into the show is excellent, shame the writers didn't think of it.
I do wonder if the Stetson Marshall is in the scene because they didn't want to shoot a hole in the Baron's hat worn by Olyphant.
Justified, Southland, Deadwood, and Rome are all shows that should be shown in reruns. Bluebloods has it own channel, for heavens sake!
Looks good on you 🤠👌👍.
I’ll order one now 🤠
I have one of the Buffalo collection hats which is marked as 4X. But unlike the regular 4X wool hats, the Buffalo collection is made out of 100% Buffalo fur. Not as adorable as beaver or as waterproof. But still much more durable than straight wool felt.
Just as sheep “fur” is wool, buffalo “fur” is also wool. Just google “buffalo wool” and you’ll find numerous explanations. Stetson markets it as fur, but it’s a wool hat - just a more durable wool - hence the 4X designation.
What hat did Boone have on
The debate can be ended by contacting the wardrobe department head of the series. It’s possible that Raylon wore the Barons hat because Timothy preferred it, but Stetson was referred to as a story point. The bullet holed Stetson could also be explained as they ruined a Stetson copy of the Barons to not damage the wardrobe preferred Barons.
That was my thought exactly. They're not about to ruin an $1,100 hat for one screenshot.
I work with horses for a living - I don't buy those xpensive hats - Ive never paid more than 60 or 70$ for a hat - and I've got a bunch of them
The Yellowstone hats are mainly from Burns Custom Hats in Wyoming.
Wrong, Burns Custom Hats is in Salina, Utah
where can i find the stetson marshal raylan givens hat
I bought mine from an online store named Outland USA, but they have only a few sizes left in stock. Just search with Google, and you can find others.
How do you measure your head for a hat like that?
There are lots of instructional videos on the topic on CZcams. This one should be helpful to you - czcams.com/video/vB_jdrMuh1w/video.html
The band was put on wrong @ the set until they figured it out. Nice looking hat that is getting harder to find.
Same hat probably, but the Show hat has had the brim shaped.
So it’s your contention that because the hat that was shot is what he was wearing rather than they picked up a cheaper Stetson to poke holes into. I also feel like they ruined the lining when they shot it or however they made a hole and just removed it after that
Goody, Goody Gumdrops! Good job!!
nice hat
i need this hat
He was clearly wearing the had backwards.
The "Gus" started it's rise as the "Tom Horn" after Steve McQueen role
Subscribed!
They used the Stetson Marshall as a stand-in hat. Nobody shoots a hole in a thousand dollar hat.
I always wondered how someone on a U.S. Marshal's salary could afford a thousand dollar hat...
