  • The Kubota B2601 is loaded with the B2782B Snowblower and the Landpride RB1672 Rear Blade to plow snow off the driveway. The drive is icy, crusty snow now. My subscribers have provided a few suggestions as to how they clear their driveways so today I try 4 different methods to see how each works on the current conditions. Check them out to see what method you think works best in the current conditions, here in the outdoors. Cheers and all the best!

    Hey there Gord!!! One of the biggest challenges I have when plowing our road is getting the snow to roll off my blade and over the snow banks. Because this doesn't always happen as well as I would like the road gets narrow as the winter wears on. Every now and then I'll try and blow the snow banks away to widen the road again. Sometimes this works , sometimes it doesn't. I like what you are doing with your lane. Multiple techniques to keep your lane as wide as you can for as long as you can!!! Smart plowing and like an old guy told me one time, "You always plow for the next storm." Have a great week!!!

    Yet another awesome video with creative camera positioning and editing. Dang GP, I don't know HOW you do it sir !! My vote goes to method 3 and 4. But like I say, my opinion and about $.75 will get you a senior coffee at the local McD's. lol.
    The layout of the roadway sometimes dictates the plan of attack. Also the tools available make a HUGE difference as you so adroitly demonstrate with the snowblower and the center windrow technique. I have no snowblower but I do have heavier tractors with chains that allow me to actually ride halfway off the roadway and really skid the windrow off the edges. Other places the banks come up on both sides just at the road edge, so I turn the blade backwards and push in reverse through that area and off down into the woods.
    So long story short....be ready to change plans in the middle of the job if the conditions dictate !! Great job, I enjoyed watching the blade scootch you partially sideways while windrowing the edge. lol. What's that they say...BTDT...been there done that. Side note...it'll mess up your rock in places, but try settimng the scarifiers one notch below the cutting edge on the box blade and see if that busts up the under-freeze quickly. But then you have huge chunks of icy packed snow to move too. And that could really be a problem. Btw..you probably shouldn't listen to me...hahahaha.
    Thank you sir for the video !! Just think...sometimes the old timers would drag a railroad tie, standing on it crossways for weight, with a team of mules for power. Are we lucky or what !! Apologies for the lengthy reply....but hey, I can't help it. lolol. Take care and be safe in the cold weather !!

    • @GPOutdoors
      @GPOutdoors  Před 5 lety +1

      Hey good evening T44! Thanks - some good advice in there. Another reason why I am still considering chains for the back. When I ride the windrow, it pulls. A few folks have suggested doing the blade backwards so I still have to try that option and see how it works for me. For some reason, that blade has taken me a lot longer than I figured, to understand how it works but I am getting a little better each time, I think. I really like method 3 and 4 too and feel a little bad cause I can't remember which subscriber suggested it to me and would have liked to thank them on camera, cause it is definitely a favourite now.
      And hey, my wife just got the seniors discount so I'll take some good stories and a cheap coffee anytime. LOL. Thanks and all the best T44!

    Um ive always shortened my toplink when i want more aggressive results. But you what works for you. I liked the approach of blading in then blowing out for your tight driveway. With moms i around twice each way with my blade on first angle because my tires are dry with 120 lbs wieghts. Considering loading my tires with 500lbs calcuim chloride each side then i could do extreme angle without being kicked sideways having wieght and chains. If it gets too bad i have a old trip latch loader with a snow bucket

    • @GPOutdoors
      @GPOutdoors  Před 5 lety

      Good morning TB! Thanks for the morning comment. I think it is a good method as well. I think most of them work well depending on the condition of the driveway so over time I will get a little better at it. I have beet juice in my tires and glad I did. Not sure if you can see on the video, but you are right. I do sometimes get kicked sideways when the blade is digging and full so perhaps I should also reduce the angle a bit sometimes first. We might have different style blades. Mine does cut more aggressively by extending the upper control arm, as the direction manual says to do, so perhaps I just a different design blade. Thanks for watching and for the comment. Have a great weekend!

    GP, one suggestion on your passes as it appears you traveled in the same direction and thus pushed all the snow to one side of the driveway. Not knowing the lay of your land that may be your only option.
    But if the lay of your driveway/property allows it, make your first past just slightly to the side of the driveway your blade is angled. Somewhere around a 1/4 to 1/3 of your blade width. Your second pass will be on the other side from the bank you created going the opposite direction down the drive way. The third pass would be the same direction as the first pass moving the bank of snow off the edge of your driveway.
    This should reduce the snow bank on the one side of your drive. Again it may not work if your land layout will cause melting snow to travel across your driveway, this could make it worse.

I have been through a few contractors over the years - all nice folks - but who eventually tell me I need someone with a blower. In or about January they can no longer plow it as the sides build up and the driveway becomes narrow - too narrow to plow any longer. I looked in the Land Pride catalogue, it looks as though your blade weighs around 250 lbs. If you want a bit more bite, you and Guy could fabricate a simple bracket to mount on the rear of the grader blade boom above the blade. Then attach some scrap metal plates to bring the overall blade weight up. My ancient 7' blade weighs over 500 lbs. and pretty much gets its own way, unless I clip a large rock.

I preferred method 3 and 4 for sure. I wish I had tried these ideas out earlier but at least now I know. And yes, learned the hard way over the years that you have to change methods throughout the winter and based on temperatures and precipitation. It comes kind of second nature now after a number of year as you just kind of know after a while that in certain conditions you know to do certain things and not to do other things. But very happy I am doing it myself now and not paying to get it done. That's the best part! Cheers and thanks! Have a great week Henry!

    Good day GP! Well done! Your snow blower can really throw the snow a long way. Was that a cup of coffee I saw on the fender of your tractor? Also, quick technical question: in the earlier shots from the tripod camera, were you doing a digital zoom in the editing software? If so, do you shoot in 4K and render in 1080 or do you just zoom 1080 footage? Again, great job, but I missed hearing you say “cheers”!

      LOL DIY! It was -27C when I filmed it so I was so cold that I couldn't bring myself to talk. LOL. I figured the picture said a thousand words. I just needed to get in by the fire. I film in 1080p. The zoom is through the software so I have to be careful as it starts to lose clarity if I zoom too much. And yes, that was an insulated cup full of the good stuff! LOL. But it got cold pretty quick. Cheers DIY!

      Yikes! -27C. No thanks! Glad you had coffee with you. It's a must-have survival aid in that kind of weather. Thanks for the info. My software supports it too but I've been leery of it for the reason you said. So I'll try it out - in moderation, of course! Cheers GP!

      I was too for a while DIY. But just give it a try on a small section in your next video. You should be able to adjust how much it zooms and just keep you eye on the frame while you do it, and you will see when picture starts to get grainy and then back it off a bit. I'm sure you'll do great. Cheers!

    Hi Gord. A little late to the comment. I discovered your channel recently. I've thrown my back out and have been enjoying passing the time binge watching your channel.
    To my comment. Have you tried raising the shoes on the blower to allow the sides to not float and let the rear of the blower dig and scrape the hard stuff so it can be blown?
    I'm north of you near North Bay and we got a lot of snow last year.

      Good day Alain. Sorry to hear about your back but hopefully you are well on the mend. I have a number of friends from North Bay. Thanks for offering the suggestion. The blower is attached to a subframe which does not allow the back to adjust or tilt. The shoes sit at their highest position by December and the weight of the blower does not provide enough pressure to dig into the hard stuff more than it does. A great idea I think if the blower had a different design or weighed more. I have tried pushing it with down pressure but it is very awkward and difficult. Thanks for offering it and hope you get better soon. And thanks for watching Alain. All the best!

      @@GPOutdoors its unfortunate that it doesn't work that way. At least with the back blade you have a good solution.
      Thank you I am getting better.

    Or, you could find or fabricate a bar that would attach to the blade with a few ripper shanks on it, to help penetrate the ice? 🤔🤔🤔 Other than that, nice video.

      Thanks Tomas. I think I'll be good with the box blade. I purposely packed it last into the shed in case I needed it but with the sander (broadcast spreader) I'll probably be ok for the winter. (famous last words...LOL) Have a great week!

    I thought you were going to do a pass down one side blading into the center, turn around and 2 second pass along other side blade into center, third pass blow the windrow off.
    Then wait for some more rain warmth and turn the drive into a ice sheet ... what has happened here

      Good day Leo. A lot of blowing snow I imagine. Have a little of that here now as the winds have picked up quite a bit. Stay warm and thanks for saying hi!
