How to operate a still air box (SAB) for home and commercial mushroom cultivation

  • Still air is the name of the game in a still still-air-box (SAB). A still internal atmosphere allows for microscopic contaminant particles to rest on the floor of the SAB, turbulence generated by movements within the "box" will disrupt the settled particles, potentially resulting in contamination.
    Never modify a SAB with gloves, blowers, or fans, filtered or otherwise. Do not fill your SAB with flammable vapors or operate a torch within the SAB, certainly never combine flammable alcohol vapor with open torch flames.

      That works fine for a small tote, not necessary for this large SAB.

    Very informative, thank you. I've watched a lot of videos on mycology on youtube recently, and yours is the only one to cover the reasons not to use to a glove box. Lots of people promote SABs, but don't mention glove boxes. Could be very easy for a noob like myself to see a glove box, and think it's a better/upgraded version of an SAB.

    Agree on simplicity of SAB and usage. On the part of adding fan and filter internally and gloves access, thats depends on use and environmental factors. Not to say it is good, just an added layer of getting better air quality control within the box. The inter filter and fan doesn’t need to be turn on during actual work, just need to pre-clean and turn off beforehand.

      We're talking about techniques authored by semi-anonymous individuals to cultivate what was once illegal mushroom species.
      There are no legal actions that can be taken against individuals who have misrepresented information they've found published openly on the internet.
      This is a widely known fact in the online mushroom community, it's folks who are new to this community that don't recognize this reality.
      Unless of course, you believe that all of these folks learned to cultivate in a vacuum and have become so adept independently of others that their cultivation content is pure insight, hard earned experience, and skill. None of them are skilled, none of them have developed their own techniques, and none of them give credit where it's due while they charge unwarranted fees for unsuspecting newcomers to access info they have neither developed nor know how to employ correctly themselves.
      They're charlatans.

    Hi, thanks for this valuable info! And just starting and I'm going to remove the gloves from the holes of my SAB (it's just an inverted tub). I'll Also add something to put my materials a couple cm above the floor of the SAB. I wanted to ask you, if I Get more serious in the future, do you think making a proper SAB like this would minimize contamination reliably (providing good sterile technique) or is a laminar flow clearly better? Thanks!

    • @StipeCap
      @StipeCap  Před měsícem +1

      Both have advantages and disadvantages and can have different applications. Working with contaminated wild cultures or spore printing is best done in a still-air environment. Still air is often employed in areas that don't have access to a cheap/reliable power source in developing countries.
      Laminar flow allows for freedom of movement, workflow, and a greater volume of work when the appropriate infrastructure is available.
      Having both available is the best-case scenario. Sterile technique is key no matter what you choose.

    • @martindamasseno5164
      @martindamasseno5164 Před měsícem

      @StipeCap thanks for this detailed answer. I'm just a beginner but I'm Also highly motivated. I'll see how I can manage to make myself a proper and big enough SAB for now. I'm also trying my Best with sterile technique, exposing grains and spores as little as possible to the air and not putting my hands above this materials. It's more challenging that it seems, isn't it?
      If I can, I would like to know your opinion about this: should I, provided I Get a big enough SAB, prepare the cakes inside of it or not? Because it seems overkill, but, at the same time, we're really careful while preparing the grains, but not as much with the bulk, and I happened to Get contams at the bulk colonizing stage.

    • @StipeCap
      @StipeCap  Před měsícem +1

      @martindamasseno5164 Still air and laminar flow are for the sterile culturing phase of cultivation. Producing pure culture on agar, the inoculation of media like spawn, liquid culture, grain to grain transfer, etc.
      Anything past that phase that doesn't involve nutrient-dense substrate or media can be handled in the open air.

    You can use the same theory as a paint booth, dust particle floating around can mess up a paint job, so they wet down the inside to keep particles from blowing around and was vaccum vented! you don't need to vaccum vent, but use a spray bottle of 70% iso.alchoh. to moisten the interior, but not to the point where you have dripping from the top and onto your items you are working on!

    • @StipeCap
      @StipeCap  Před 8 měsíci

      Some folks spray the floor with soapy water to trap and neutralize particles, isopropyl tends to evaporate and produce fumes. Neither is necessary, but I'd choose soapy water over alcohol.
      The problem with a vacuum system is it pulls outside particles into the box, and disrupts the still air environment.
