This was delightful from start to finish, with gorgeous singing throughout, and a nice feeling for Offenbach style from the conductor and his forces. Yes, the production is jokey, but I'm sure a good time was had by all.
Special mention has to go to Ms. Costello, whose Duchess brought us brilliantly operatic singing, super-energetic Broadway-quality comic acting and a physical performance the likes of which will never be seen on the operetta stage again!
Honorable mentions to the entire remainder of the cast, especially the luxurious high notes of Mr. Yeakley and the sonorous lows of Mr. Powers.
If I had any quibble at all, it might be with the over-the-top fey portrayal of Prince Paul, which could have been ordered by the director, or might have been a collaboration between her and the singer. Either way, it was borderline offensive, too obvious and (unusual for this production) unimaginative.
Still, it must have been a heck of a night for operetta lovers in Kansas!
