Brilliant video. Am I the only one to think that there is an irony in the fact that the modern electric trains (at the start of the video) are branded "LNER", while the Flying Scotsman (no longer in her LNER livery) is in British Rail livery? I love the fact that the diesel was unhitched and Flying Scotsman ran as she was meant to - under only her own steam.
Hi,my name is Phil I did 50yrs on the footplate 8yrs on steam i started at edgeley shed on 4th April 1961 I finished my time out at longsight as a driver but on the 19th of February 1973 I fired the flying Scotsmen from Manchester to derby works and on the 25th of August I fired lender from derby to Manchester I finished on 2011 Regards Phil.
Absolutely amazing...! This remind me to my grandpa..He is train driver when I was young I always excited to hear his story job :) thank u for awesome video. I've subcribed :-) Warm greeting from Indonesia..
Wunderschön, gepflegt und blitzblank der ganze Zug. England hat noch eine gepflegte Eisenbahnkultur. Beautifull this Train. Britannia is top in Railway Kultur ! This Loc is a wonder of beauty in all. Mit welcher Leichtigkeit sie diesen langen Zug, nach dem Anfahren, beschleunigt ist allein schon eine Spitzenleistung.
Thank you for sharing this great footage. I watched her come through Alexandra Palace 20 minutes later. Taking it nice and steady, a glorious sight. What a shame to read in the comments that she failed down the line.
Lovely engine sadly I never saw her type when I trainspotted there in the late fifties as a kid. The magnificent A4s where there of course and they used the turntable and left an engine at the buffers. Some of the nice drivers would let you on the footplate and give you a ride up the platform and stop and let you off at the end. Wonderful days.
I just caught steam's last gasp. I saw Lord Farringdon blast through Grantham, chime whistle on through the station. "Streak" went up the cry as schoolboys rushed to the end of the platform. From then on I was hooked
Beautiful engine!! We stood for over 2 hours to wait for it to go through Newark on 19th June, but missed it as it was 3 hours late! Gutted! Thanks for sharing the video.
Good video ! Scotsman was due to stop at Huntingdon, but since it said on the steam info website it was cancelled we didn’t go to the station to see it, 😞
Really? I don't remember seeing it down as cancelled on the website? I saw it in Huntingdon though not from the platform. I saw two of the "lest we forget" inter-city 225s as shown in this video come in at roughly the same time as the Scotsman so they can't have been much different in pace. Those were also stopping at Huntingdon along with some azumas at the time because of track maintenance or something so there was a lot going on.
Good to see the some of the new arrangements at Kings Cross - presumably controlled from York now. A few more 47s will put a stop to the nice clean ballast! It looked like a brisk, clean start for Flying Scotsman as well. I was surprised not to see the 47 ‘on the tail’ when watching the departure. Evidently no electric heating requirement for that set.
When I was a young lad I attended the Royal High School in Edinburgh every morning I would pass over the Bridge at the top of craigentinny av just in time to see and hear The Flying Scotsman Roar by on its way to London I was always late for school
She was in Scarborough 3 years ago & I managed to get on the foot plate & get some photos, Showed them my friend who is a real steam enthusiast & he was so upset!
I know she changed owners, but I’m surprised her number changed as well. But this is probably something an American wouldn’t understand, who watches allot of 1225 PM, 765 NPR, as well as Flying Scottsman
60103 is the number she carried in service with British Railways until withdrawal in 1963. 4472 was the number she carried in LNER days and when Alan Pegler owned her and took her on tour in the USA and Australia.
Poor quality coal apparently, couldn't keep the boiler pressure high enough. She was running solo without the back-up donkey on the back. Not sure why, as shown above it was there at Kings X . We all love to see these old ladies on the main line but if they cause that much disruption then it's not helping the cause.
You should have seen the place in the fifties and sixties when the place was filthy and full of steam. It's the modern trains that look out of place in a Victorian station.
So that's where all that money's going? King's Cross is nothing like as grubby as I remember it. I am surprised that they allow a dirty steam engine to dirty their nice clean ballast and shiney catenary.

Great to see her (him???) back where he/she belongs - thanks for uploading.
A magnificent locomotive
I love the flying scotsman so much
your channel name is too long

The Flying Scotsman can pull 13 coaches!
Isn't The Flying Scotsman just speedy and strong?!👍🏼💗💖

More upset than if you hadn't taken any photos for him?
A great video. Thanks for showing it. Sorry to be a schoolmaster but there is no need for apostrophes in “Videos For All Ages”
Love how she just disappeared in her own cloud of steam when she departed
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
What a fantastic video. Does the Flying ever run in original 2 tender mode.
no the second tender was used for the LNER Peppercorn Class A1 60163 Tornado build back in 2008 i hope i have answered your question
@@dylanpurcell1246 There was a documentary on BBC4 the other night showing the Flying Scotsman with 2 tenders. It’s I BBC iPlayer.
@@charlottevictoria.hubbard7472 what is the documentary called
@@dylanpurcell1246 4472-Flying Scotsman.
The second tender was added by Alan Pegler in the 1960s, because of the problems of getting water on long runs. It was never "original".
Is that Pete Waterman hanging out ,backing up ????
Unfortunately a jinx has struck on poor flying Scotsman again whilst halfway through the east coast mainline

Yes, I agree but hauled into Kings Cross by 'her tail' by a class 47, how undignified for "Scotty!"
So what’s with the Diesel engine?
To pull it back from Edinburgh I thought?
The diesel locomotive provides dynamic braking
Over 2 hours late at Retford, any information on as to why?
Failed due to low boiler pressure.
Oh hope they fix it soon
Scotsman was decleared a failure just north of retford and was dragged by a 47 to york
@@wjs_1106 ok thank you hope they fix her

Why do people find this loco so wonderful?
If you fill the need to ask that question - then you are on the wrong site my friend !
Then don't watch plain and simple
She's a beautiful feat of engineering.
Is it just me or does Flying Scotsman looks a bit out of place in King's Cross now?
No
Out of place ❓ Never
Maybe with all the electrical stuff going on and the modern looking structures.

not a big fan of the br flying scotsman id love it if they bring her back to her lner glory
I like the BR Brunswick Green but I'm not keen on the smoke deflectors. Too Continental-looking.

I'm pretty sure it was running on oil or something as it certainly didn't smell or look like coal.
Only to fail later.
Should of burnt a few of these useless masks, that might made a bit more pressure.
What masks?
