Are you drumming on a shaky foundation?
I remember taking a tour of New Orleans, and our guide was telling us how deep the foundational pillars had to be for the downtown skyscrapers. Because the city is below sea level, the support of these towering buildings have to be super solid and sturdy to withstand the elements.
Our drumming is the same: the stronger your foundation, the higher you'll soar.
I hear all the time from drummers around the world that have severe gaps in their playing that holds them back. This also happened to me!
A house divided cannot stand.
But once I went back to basics, everything clicked. I've been blessed to have been taught by some of the greatest masters that ever lived, and they all had one thing in common in their approach: SIMPLICITY.
Simplicity is not easy. Few drummers can do it like Steve Jordan, John Bonham, or Steve Gadd where they do SO MUCH with SO LITTLE. That's what's ironic about having a solid foundation: it's so much more FUN because you don't have to stress about doing that much!
'Less, but better.'
If you are going for complicated, you've lost your 'white belt mentality'. The very best rock the basics to perfection, and then stay eternal students for life. Can you make SIMPLE sound amazing? (I'm still working on it ...)
