- A sampling of drills that you can do on the ice, when you've managed to take your first few steps by yourself but still want to become more comfortable when skating! This video is intended to bridge the gap between the pure "learn to ice skate video" that I shot and the more intense powerskating videos which I often shoot!

This middle aged guy right here has been trying to improve my skating, and this is exactly what I needed. I’ve been trying to work on skating backwards and my hockey stop as well.
great to hear that I could help! Did you watch my backward skating and hockey stop videos?
Why highlight his age tho lol
@@dogacimen6851 He's referring to himself, not Marcel.
cool, you can also do these drills skating backwards, try that.
If you are talking about yourself being the “middle aged guy”, you should have said “his skating”, not “my skating”. Otherwise, it seems like you are pointing out the coach being middle aged for no reason. Lol
All my uncles cousins and friends played hockey since they were Children and I've been a zamboni driver for 4 years now. I'm 26 and finally learning hockey. Thanks for the video.
Have fun! It’s never too late to learn!
I’m a new hockey player and it is my first year. My skating skills are decent but these drills helped me a lot. Thank you for teaching me. I’m going to be a better player.
That’s great! Glad I could help you to improve!
WHAT AGE DID YOU START ICE HOCKEY
@@mrfarmy9608 I was 5.
@@MarcelsHockeySchool I'm 15 do you think it's to late to start ice hockey
@@mrfarmy9608 no you can still start for sure.
Im so glad you mentioned the superman glide. im coming back to the basics bc i havent skated in like a decade, and i felt way less comfortable with the concept of falling than i should be & it kept me from committing to certain drills that feel a little harder. i kept thinking “oh i hope i fall today so i can be reminded that falling isnt such a big deal” so hearing that this is something that happens & that just throwing yourself on the ice can fix it is great
Thanks! Yeah we practicing falling with our kids in our skating programs a lot, and try to make it as fun as possible!
Thank you so much for these videos. I'm a hockey mom to a kiddo that is just learning and I've never even skated. These have been very helpful.
You’re welcome! Glad I could help!
Thank you for the video Marcel. I've been volunteering helping beginners. I will admit that some of these are still a little advanced for some of these kids but I will certainly use some of what you have demonstrated. Thanks!!
Glad I could help Stephen! Yes, maybe one or two drills are too hard for pure beginners. Here’s the link to my pure learn to skate video- hope than can help you too! czcams.com/video/FhnZLEOisek/video.html
I’m trying to learn and literally the first step I can notice the distance you are a life saver thank you so much for this I’m watching this and trying these on the rink at the same time
That's awesome that you're watching them and then doing them immediately after! Have fun!
I’m switching from figure skating to hockey (don’t love figure skating anymore but I’ve missed the ice, and I love contact and team sports) and I need this haha. It's so different. I tried to stop on hockey skates and nearly died lol.
Yeah definitely way different. Have fun!
The Superman clip deserves many likes! These are great skills to have for any skater!
Thanks so much!
Great stuff. I'm just a bit above this level and it's difficult to find good videos. More please! (especially one leg C-cuts - can't do them at all)
Phil P Thanks! Check out this one for the one-legged C-Cuts. It’s in German but I write subtitles in English for my German vids! czcams.com/video/qsqCX-6lEuE/video.html
Thank u!! I've been looking for some beginner drills. Unfortunately no one in my family knows how to skate properly and I'm too old to take lessons so I'm a self-taught skater for now. I started last year which got interrupted due to covid so I managed to only learn slow backwards skating and forward crossovers. My balance is decent as an ex-dancer so I can't wait to try these!!
Glad I could help! Have fun trying them out!
Just started skating and hockey and let me tell ya these videos have been a HUGE help. It’s hard to pick up hockey as an adult and almost 0 beginners classes for adults here in the Dakotas
Glad I could help you out!
@@MarcelsHockeySchool truly amazing thank you so much again!
Nice and smart video for beginners as I am !! ... Different from other I saw. Thanks Marcel !
You’re most welcome!
Love the superman !
Thanks! Yeah it’s fun!
Very well done. Love especially last drill never seen that before.
Thank you! Haha yeah we love the Superman☺️
Me encanto el final como se mueve de un lado a otro
I loved the ending how he moves from side to side.
Haha thank you!
Yo! Heading for the ice now Marcel..made a list of these drills for today. Thanks.
Cool! Hope the practice went well!
Thanks for the tip. I actually wrote a list and created a skilled skating book👍👍👍👍👍
This def was informative
glad I could help!
is that sarcasm cuz this is informative and fun
This was super helpful thanks fo making this

Thank you for this video, i really needed something basic i can start working on as a beginner 😁
Glad you liked it!
Awesome, thank you! Loved the superman cut at the end 😂
Haha thanks!
This is the video I was looking for. Greetings from Calgary.

thanks a lot!
thank you useful tips
You’re most welcome!
Awesome and resourceful video
Thanks a lot!
This is great!!!
Thanks!
Great video. What would have been nice is an explanation of why each of these are beneficial.
Thanks! You're right, I did explain 1,2 and 6 but not the other drills.
1. Get the feel of the edges
2. Getting low is a must for being able to skate more powerfully
3. Learning The "Egg"-style c-Cuts will help later with turning.
4. A"Pre-" drill for turning. This is how we start to learn a tight turn.
5. For Balance
6. To help not getting injured when falling down, and it's fun!
@@MarcelsHockeySchool thank you! It's a challenge to practice in a public session of chaos haha
Thanks
you're welcome!
Beginner skater at 28. Played hockey for like three years now but always at beginner level and never well. I can’t wait to try these drills. Can you comment on how your mobility is or is not restricted once you’re in pads? I can’t tell if my gear just isn’t fitted right or if I am just a bad/stiff skater
Have fun with the drills! Yes you will feel a bit restricted with gear on, but I find you get used to it after 2-3 skates.
hopefully im gonna play hockey this year, i skate for 5 hours a week and doing these in all of them might help :)
Good luck to you!
Thanks Marcel! Needed a refresher course been a few years since hockey practice.
You’re most welcome!
I first watched this video when I was getting back into skating a month back, I'm very much beginner level. It didn't really make sense to me and seemed a bit pointless compared to other more aggressive drill videos...I tried to egg and couldn't, so gave up.
Then this weekend, I was trying to learn to undercut and crossover and realised the c cut with undercut portion of this video, so I tried to egg and could and suddenly I realised how good this video is at getting you used to doing things that you'll use in more advanced moves. Now it's part of my routine every time I go (apart from the superman 😂)
Well there you go! These drills help you out with the more „real“ skating techniques you learn later. And the Superman is just fun 😃
@@MarcelsHockeySchool have you done more drills like these focused on the skating aspect? For crossovers and skating backwards for example. Of all the videos I've been watching, yours and Coach Jeremy's seem to get through to me most 😂
I am a beginner and have only learned for a few days. that is very useful for me
Thanks 🙇
Glad I could help!
@@MarcelsHockeySchool Of course!
I learn how to stand, walk, move in your video
@@lung19881117 that’s awesome🤩
im 24 and i started skating in Jan i want to be able to play hockey because i have a lotta friends who love it and i wanna give it shot and my dad played hockey growing up so thanks for the help
You’re welcome and good luck!
germany in the ice hockey community yayy🇩🇪🇩🇪
yes!
Danke für das Video vieler dieser Übungen werde ich mal ausprobieren
Daniel Duckhorn Danke schön 🙏
I've been skating on and off for years, played a little rec hockey but never enough to be any good at it (it's not big in the UK and there's not many rinks). I turned 40 this week and treated myself to some new skates and went to the rink for the first time in a decade. Public skate sessions are always counter clockwise so all my drills are way better in one direction than the other which is really annoying and I was stuck at the same level, never really improving. I am very quick over the ice when moving counter-clockwise, but clockwise I don't seem to have confidence in my edges and I quickly start wobbling or the skate starts skidding and bouncing. I took a lot away from this vid and I can't wait to get back to the rink and start trying them out and improving.
Glad I could help out! Yeah I know how it is with just one direction at public skating. I try to find a corner or got right to the middle circle with some people who I coach, so we stay out of the way but still can work the other direction.
my guy cleaned the whole rink with his front body
Haha😂
When executing the various "cuts" (like for the eggs or slalom), are you lifting the front of the skate slightly? Hard to imagine making any kind of turns with blades flat on the ice.
Good question: yes. Turning: back part of the blade. Stopping: mid to front. Striding: the last push comes from the front.
That superman move actually made falling look like fun.
ohhhh you bet it's fun! :D
I can't believe these are beginner drills!
They are. If they’re too difficult, check out my learn to skate tutorial
Great tutorial to bring to coaching. Except the superman glide, extend your right arm, looks more realistic, lol. Merci
Thanks! Haha you’re absolutely right, and I forgot my cape as well 😂
part2 bittteeeee
next year ;)
Schöne Videos 👍🏿. Ist eventuell ein Video geplant, dass die Laufwege der Flügelstürmer im Spielaufbau aus dem eigenen Drittel heraus beschreibt? Vielen Dank 😊
occiput12 Danke erstmals 🙏 so ne Aufbau Thema ist extrem spezifisch- davor müsste ich eigentlich 2gg1, gesamt Aufbau, Forecheck, D-Zone, und vieles anderes machen, also sehr schwierig....
Marcel's Hockey School schade, vielleicht schaffst du es ja doch 😊. Aber, vielen Dank
Helmets for beginners, too!!!
Yes👍 I wore one in my learn to skate tutorial. Just forgot it here 😃
The superman took me out. 🤣😂
Hit me too😂🦸🏻♂️
👍
Szia! Először azt hittem, hogy olasz zászló van a "logo"-dban, aztán láttam, hogy a családneved Juhász, azaz egy magyar név. :))) Üdv Magyarországról, köszi a videókat, nagyon jók!
Szia! Köszönöm! My father is Hungarian, but sadly, I never learned the language :(
@@MarcelsHockeySchool no worries - I m not surprised. :)) It happens sadly many times with hungarian parents and their children :((
Okay I always try to skate with one foot in the air but it immediately goes back down cause I'm afraid to fall pft
Yeah that’s totally normal. The more comfortable you get, the longer you’ll be able to keep one foot in the air!
watching this made me tear my acl lol
my feet feels numb after 15min ish. size should be right by pro shop. what can be the problem? too tight laces?
Could be laces too tight or sometimes your feet need a bit of getting used to the skates and skating
I am a beginner.
I find it hard to do the drill 3: the egg and also its backward equivalent. What are the possible mistakes?
Try to do a smaller egg. Often beginners try a very big one, then their legs get too wide and they get stuck. Also, shift more weight onto your heels
@@MarcelsHockeySchool
Will I fall backward if I shift the weight to the heels? You mean, for both forward and backward eggs? If it is not from your instructions, I may have thought that you want to shift the weights to the toes, the front part of the blades? I have hardly finished one complete cycle of the egg without stopping. Is this easy and can be learnt in a day?😑
And do the toe pick, front, middle and end of the blades play important roles and needed to be switch to in different drills?
Can you recommend protection gear for beginner skaters that aren’t intending to play hockey? Seems silly to be all suited in full hockey equipment to go to my public skating session. I really appreciated you including falling in your video!
Yes. Definitely wear a helmet, and knee/elbows pads are a good idea!
7:10 Buddy’s a zamboni 😂😂
Gotta save water and energy over here :D
I have nothing to hide I do figure skating
I play for a team named Queen city Royals and I used to play for A team named triad storm and they were doing it wrong now that I see and I’m just really mad about that
That’s too bad but I hope that you can still change things!
I just get thrown off by the tiny blade that you’re balancing on when skating. By just putting ice skates on and even walking is basically asking for a broken ankle. I don’t get how it’s safe, how is one supposed to balance their whole body with just something as slim as a pencil holding you up, you have no base? I’m just jaded and scared to try new things but it just doesn’t look safe and I’m scared to turn an ankle
The blades grip the ice well and you get used to it. It’s very safe. Wear protective gear so you feel comfortable
Curious where in Germany this is filmed?
Also, just a recommendation. It might be tedious, but adding a table of contents with time links to each drill would be awesome.
In Landsberg am Lech. Yes I agree with the table of contents- I believe that YT is supposed to do that automatically with the newer videos. The fact is, I subtitle all my vids (the German ones with English and vice versa), which is a ton of work already, so I dont really have time to put even more work into the after video stuff.
@@MarcelsHockeySchool Fair enough. Thanks!
And remember, helmets are way cooler than hospital clothes!
Most definitely!
if i did the superman at mmy mall rink i would get kicked out pretty fast lol
Your rink attendant needs to lighten up 😂
Do you always want to fall in front and not sideway? Will that hurt your hands?
No the hands slide on the ice
@@MarcelsHockeySchool
Your videos are fun and attractive.
Beginners always fall and this can hurt the hands badly if they stop the fall by hands. What you would recommend if they fall.
@@Leon-tm7wo wear a pair of gloves. You will not hurt your hands on the ice by falling. This is more of a problem on inline skates where the hands don’t slide on the pavement.
@@MarcelsHockeySchool
Maybe I have not described it correctly.
If the beginner lost the balance and were to break the fall by hand, for example stopping a fall that may hit the head, the wrist and elbow may be hurt and feel painful for some weeks. The impact force of the hand hitting the ice may be more than half of the body weight. So would there be a better practice when the beginner lost the balance?
And if pain ointment or pain pill necessary in speeding up the recovery?
Looking forward more of your videos.😊
@@Leon-tm7wo I understood what you meant, and again, it is still better to fall onto your hands than for example onto your hip. Wear gloves and elbow pads if you prefer to lessen the impact.
this is hard i only been on the ice once
and funny too at the end
Jaymi Australia life here’s a pure learn to skate video I shot, which might be more helpful to you: czcams.com/video/FhnZLEOisek/video.html
Definitely not for beginners
Richard Leonard This is my basic „Learn to Skate“ Video: czcams.com/video/FhnZLEOisek/video.html These drills I posted are a progression of that video
was sind das für schlittschuhe ?
lifestyle 123 CCM AS1 Tacks
whos here cuz of school
me ugh
LOL at the one legged skating using the edges. That is advanced skating. Most intermediate skaters would not be able to do this...
As I explained in the video, the one-legged glide on the edges was only shown as a progression which you can start trying after you can glide straight on one leg (which is a drill for beginners and the main drill in that part of the video)
Thanks. Not trying to be critical. I never knew exactly why bowlegged people have an advantage until this video. Now it makes complete sense!
웃기다 ㅋㅋㅋ
If I can ski decently I can ice skate dammit
Yes it makes it easier.
Yes it makes it easier.
My Superman died

Yes. If you want a more simple one I also have a learn to skate tutorial

Gibt es auch ;)
Interesting that you call c-cuts 'eggs' in German.
In English, it's called 'lemons', and in Kazakhstan we call it the 'hairy ballsack.'
lol
that is really weird
In Mexico we call them little fish “pescaditos”
You do not explain how to execute the technques or show we what you do. Furthermore, the moves you made are too far in the screen
All of the techniques and moves are explained and demonstrated. What more of an explanation would you like?
Unfortunately since I do not have a cameraman I have to place the camera at a certain spot and film from there.
Don’t listen to people like that
I really enjoyed the video and it really helped me out
@@elijahshepley7434 thank you. Don't worry, I don't especially when they can't back it up!
