Since the first time I heard this song I’ve felt the same way. I dreamt of learning to play the guitar, sit on my porch and play this all day. I got the porch but no guitar.
Having seen and listened to the Allman Brothers many times in New Orleans during my college days at LSU in the early 1970s, this Stonybrook recording of Blue Sky belongs in the Library of Congress. The very epitome of live perormance perfection. Duane Allman is the greatest guitar player of all time in my view: a standard that all others will strive to exceed. Dickie Betts is standing right next to him. Lastly, just groove to the incredible bass fingering of the incomparable Berry Oakley. This band was God-sent.

This is in my top 10 of live performances of any song I have ever heard.Nothing beats listening to this song while driving in my car on a beautiful day with the windows down.
This performance of "Blue Sky" captures The Allman Brothers Band at their peak - tight, harmonizing, and ripping slide guitar - just prior to Duane's passing the next month. Every Allman Brothers fan should have this version in their playlist.
Paul Thibodeau I was born 28 Years after Duane passed but ill always feel like I lost an old friend. His playing comforts me in a way that few pickers can. Garcia, Hendrix and Mike Bloomfield are the only others who give me that feeling that Duane’s playing does. This is such a wonderful version of this song and the quality of the recording is wonderful. I’ll always owe my father a debt for introducing me to this incredible music.
Fast forward till 2018...still the best live recording of two of our greatest national treasure and orginal guitar players in our history: Dickey Betts and Duane Allman. This is heavenly rock as it should be played. Never forget this, my friends.
Absolutely fucking incredible. With Duane gone from us for so long (most kids don't even remember him), it is easy to forget that he belongs right up there with Hendrix (and, like Hendrix, his early death undoubtedly led to his failure to fully blossom into what he undoubtedly would have become.)
This and the live Mountain Jam from the March 12th Fillmore East show that was originally on Eat A Peach, and subsequent deluxe edition releases of At Fillmore East.
You obviously never experienced them live...Sorry on your behalf, and on everyone, since the recordings weren't that perfect back then. Let your imagination flow! Listen!
It's great, but the studio version (which i'm sure really is a 'live' performance, with better mixing and just tighter/cleaner playing/singing) is still better. Did they even overdub (besides the vocals) in the studio version? I'm thinking they didn't (that's the way EVERYONE used to record in those days....none of the 'one track at a time' stuff everyone does these days...the WHOLE band playing together, all in one take).
Saw them in Rochester, New York a year or so after Duane died. Almost saw them again at Watkins Glen, but the traffic was so bad that I never even got close. RIP Gregg. You made life more bearable for me, and for many others. You will always be missed. :/
I was a Stony Brook student (it's two words not one) with this being the last Allmans show at school. They played there 4x in the two year run up to this 71' show that had Duane and Berry perishing shortly thereafter. Great night.
@@jackwindrom253 Henry James "H" Quad dweller here. Saw them every time they played at SB. April '70 with Chicago, that summer with Mountain, with Delaney and Bonnie in Oct and this show in Sept '71. Although I kick myself about the shows I missed ( GRIN with Nils Lofgren, etc).

When music like this plays, any problems the world has become negligible. We need songs of this caliber to play on every street corner of every minute of everyday.
Saw them live 1971 7/31/1971 at the "The Park" North Baltimore Ohio. Everyone was alive then. Dickey was always my favorite I think because his dads influence as a bluegrass player is reflected in his phrasing, tone, structure and style. I think I love Duane's playing more now because he embodied old blues players, and his downright perfect ability to play off the top of his head. (improvise) Together they were best. Dickie was heart and head. Duane was all heart.
I will never tire of this!! Ever! Duane Allman put together the best Band ever!! Just listen how he makes his guitar just soar giving the whole band the standard!!! And man if they didn't deliver!! Berry plays his Bass like a third lead!! Man what talent!! Thanks Capt. for such a beautiful job!!!
Love this song. Amazing how these guys played together for such a short time - with Duane, and their music is still affecting us years later, and it will be just as much of a gas when we're gone too.
This is incredible and I'm only just finding it. Unreal. Yes, this is an instant live favorite for me, along with Mountain Jam from Eat a Peach and Liz Reed from At Fillmore East. Best band ever.
The mix of feelings in every of the ABB songs from that era is amazing and unprecedented. They seem not to play the music, the music comes out of them raw , passionate and strong ..... The sky and many of us are crying for the early loss of Duane and Berry and the era when the music stood for itself ......
