- In this video I compare all the ways to play MGS2 on PC: the PC version, the PS2 version running on PCSX2, the Xbox version running on Xemu, the Xbox 360 version running on Xenia, the PS Vita version running on Vita3K and the PS3 version running on RPCS3. There are many different versions, each one with its own pros and cons. I also talk about certain mods available for the PC version, like V's Fix and the third person camera mod. I will also be making a review on the Master Collection Vol. 1 version of Metal Gear Solid 2, so subscribe to make sure you don't miss it!

Recently in my computer Science class I told my teacher about this game since we were talking about social media and how it affected society. I told him to watch the last codec call with the AI. I told him it came out in 2001 after he watched it and that blew his mind.
Great job soldier 🫡
then your teacher should "The Selfish Gene" by Richard Dawkins, wich kojima basically read and used as theme for mgs2
@maccaroni3694 The Selfish Gene is NOT FREEDOOOM
@@user-ek2xg3ps5sYakuza 4?
how old are you?
Appreciate the work, it's always a pain in the ass to get figure the most optimal way to play these older games but having rare guides like this make it so much easier. Thanks!
answered all the questions I had before I even typed them, great comparision. thank you
this is my first time playing the mgs saga, thanks to you i already finished mgs1 and now im going to play mgs2 thanks love your content!!!!
The camera mod makes pc worth it to me, the original camera gets really frustrating at times and the new one doesn’t feel like it makes the game easier, but rather more fair, like that room under the helipad with all the conveyer belts? Feels soooo much more fair now, if you get caught its your fault, not the fault of the rooms strange proportions and sightlines
You stare at the radar the whole time anyway. Camera really doesn't matter.
@@cookieface80 yeah it does, when you have that third person camera you don't need to stare at the radar (all the time), it makes the game more fun tbh. turning the radar into a useful sidepiece instead of a mandatory lifeline
@@RC--ji2ovthat mod is amazing but honestly I still keep it on the original camera mode, just because I like MGS2 having its own unique camera style... But that's just me 😁
Camera its dont really the issue the thing is ull need an original ps2 joystick+Lillipad to cancel the shots due this game makes use of ps2 presure sensivity function otherwise u habe to stop first person aiming and unequip the weapon to cancel a shot, same on mgs3 stabing guards necks issue. this hapens just on emulation and u dont habe to deal whit this problem on pc versions.
@@piopioporopopo9711 there are other ways to cancel a shot, i always just quickly double tapped the lean button which doubles as the open menu button, so it would just quickly put the fun away, i don’t think you can aim the rifle still but thats a minor problem imo
before the video i couldnt decide between pcsx2 and rpcs3. thanks to you i think im going with pcsx2. thanks man great video
This is a great video, very informative and well put together, thank you for this.
My one wish is that the pressure-sensitive buttons issue could be rectified similar to Xbox 360, on emulators like RPCS3. Like clicking the stick sets the pressure for square to the minimum required, and acts as a toggle, as holding L3 while aiming seems rather awkward (especially with the assault rifle).
Fingers crossed that the new PC versions releasing later this year are good versions.
Your videos are super high quality man! The content you put out is consistently awesome! Keep up the amazing work!
Thank you very much! I'm glad you enjoy it!
@@1Ocelot I sincerely do! Considering MGS2 was developed with CRT TV's in mind, have you ever tried playing MGS2 with native resolution on RetroArch with CRT shaders? Probably not the best emulation, but interesting nonetheless. I think also it would make the pre-rendered codec videos look less low quality, the same goes for all the textures in inventory.
Yes I have! It looks great. In fact, latest versions of PCSX2 have CRT shaders as well. But I do have to say I was surprised by the low quality of the codec videos. Even the Xbox version has better quality on those. Still, the PS2 version at native res with a CRT shader is very nostalgic.
@@1Ocelot I've been playing around with different CRT shaders on RetroArch lately, and I'm amazed how good some of them look. I have yet to try any PS2 games though. Interesting, I didn't know PCSX2 had any shaders. I'm gonna try that out for comparison.
Super intricate guide! Thank you
pretty good, well made and comprehensive material, thanks!
Useful comparison great work putting this together.
great video, watched the whole thing!
I've already played mgs2 alot of times and I never finished because of a save issue once Wich made me rage quit (lost like 5h of gameplay) but that camera mod I was completely unaware and makes me wanna install it again. That's brilliant
The modern compatability one I've already heard before but man that camera mode, specially when I just finished mgs3
another great guide
I love your Channel. The games which one you show are excellent. Very informative video. Thank you very much
Super thorough video, THANK YOU SO MUCH. You have a very keen eye for changes I think most people wouldn't even begin to think of, like that stretched water texture.
I'm hoping when the master's collection for the game comes out it is not ONCE AGAIN based on the Xbox version of the game 😅
I'd love to see this level of depth should you choose to make a comparison video for the master's collection, since it is now available for preorder on Steam :)
great video, lots of love!
Thank you very much! And yes, I will make videos about the master collection when it comes out!
Fantastic job comparing these!
Good Job! Thanks! The best video!
Great analysis!
Amazing video. Thanks for doing this
Ocelots newest ASMR just dropped.
15:04 This is most likely incorrect, however for some codec calls the PS3 version uses the PS2 audio and 360 version recycles some of the OG Xbox versions audio for it's codecs. The rain drops downgrade is seemingly tied to the resolution, the higher it goes the worse it looks. The smoke and fire effects running at a higher frame rate is not a downgrade, it still lasts the same amount duration it just plays back smoother.
Snakes bandanna is broken in most cutscenes for the HDCollection sadly, seemingly because of the framerate. Lightning also seems to be effected.
16:05 Otacons glasses and the sea texture are emulation errors. The unpatched PC version had the same issue as that one.
With the announcement of the Master Collection, there's no definitive idea of whether it will come to GOG/Steam or not, but I guess going forwards everyone's going to have a unified HD Collection as a basis besides those owning older stuff on GOG. Here's hoping the port of a port isn't a mess in and of itself.
Konami just confirmed on the collection's website that it is indeed coming to Steam.
Master Collection is terrible. It''s locked to 1080p and 60fps on of that, Konami said no K&M support for MGS2 and MGS3 but... After huge backlash Konami decided to add full support for K&M for MGS3 and MGS2.
The base for Master Collection is HD Collection..
@@calmarfps Not even, it's locked at 1280x720
Konami has aged these games like fine milk. Emulation is the way.
Thanks for your work on this video
The whole collection is coming to PC this fall! MGS collection Volume 1 has been confirmed by Konami! It would be the best way and hopefully with better updated controls.
pretty sure they've confirmed it's only coming to the Playstation 5. There's no where on their site or social media pages stating a PC release
@@silentgamers9124 they didn't outright say PC, but this is from the official press release:
"The METAL GEAR SOLID: MASTER COLLECTION allows fans to play the games as they were, as first released, on the _latest platforms_ "

Thank you Mr.Ocelot, very cool
Great video, thanks!
Thanks for this 👍
Damn this video got released just when I finished my first playtrough of MGS2 on rpcs3 though it is still good to know for a re-play in the future
Top notch content, my guy
well didn´t expect the 3rd person camera on PC but feels pretty oficial to me, excelent explanation as always.
thank you!
Did play PC version not long after PS2 ones back in the day. And considering the port quality, it was quite flawless running on Pentium PC era. The low audio quality could be understandable since PC setup on that era still struggle to try maintain all aspect as high as possible. In fact, despite those flawless, it was barely noticeable, considering back then when playing PS2 on normal television with AV input which would barely gave any huge significant quality over PC port which I ends up enjoying far lots more, having TV with component input can be considered quite huge luxury back then. The ps2 emulation itself wasn't perfected till at least a decade wait with more better common PC gear specs, hence personally wasn't rly a fair comparison by today's standard.
I played Metal Gear Solid 2 on PC after it was released on PS2. For Metal Gear Solid 2, I had a 700 Mhz Pentium 3 processor with Windows 2000 and AMD Radeon 7000 64 mb video Ram (the weakest 64 mb video Ram card) and 256 mb RAM. It barely played Metal Gear Solid 2, and this was on low settings (12-15 fps). Yes, Metal Gear Solid 2 technically requires 800 Mhz Pentium 3 or faster (but it is possible for slightly lower Pentium 3 processors to play that game because of the optimization). As long as anyone have the right Windows operating system and better than 32 mb video ram and they have at least 256 mb ram and put it on low settings, they are good. On the other hand, Metal Gear Solid 1 worked like a charm on that computer except for Psycho Mantis boss fight.
damn the timing on this video could not have been better. I literally just got the idea of installing MGS2 on my Steam Deck and was curious which version would be best (mods included)
I don't know about you guys, but I always hit the like button
I hope that the upcoming Steam version will become the definitive way to play this game, and I also hope that the SOS mod will get ported to it!
Exist a version of MGS2 Substance than was lauch before the GOG version, have the oil in Big Shell missing and wasn't good, the GOG version can be fixed for the community. Maybe this video need a update, because MGS2 was released a few weeks ago in the MGS MASTER COLLECTION Vol.1.
Thanks Ocelot (Revolver Ocelot)
could you make an updated MGS4 rpcs3 settings vid? that would help out a lot.
Yea im waiting for the master collection for my ps5 it would be nice to play on pc but i dont have one im fine with waiting for it on the ps5 with it being on new hardware it should generally be pretty dam good cant wait mgs still one of my faveorite games of all time
I wonder what your thoughts are on the recent native ports of MGS2 & 3 HD on PC from the Master Collection.
hopes up for modders to adapt the 3rd person mod for the MGS Master Collection on pc
Dude i love your voice
I'd say PCSX2 is the best since it's the only version with the skateboarding minigame and you can just download an HD texture pack to fix the low res textures and UI. But if you really want 16:9 than RPCS3 is the one you want (if your PC can handle it). I'm guessing the Master Collection version will be the same as the 2011 remaster, but at a higher resolution.
Best gaming franchise ever created!
I cant believe they are remaking MGS3, its gonna totally suck without Kojima 😭
And honestly, we dont need any remakes, every game in the franchise is as good as they will ever get, and dont need any improvement.
Its just Konami realizing they effed up with Metal Gear Survive, which reflects the creativity they lack.
Honestly as long they don't release it completely broken which I have little faith that they won't considering the MGS Master Collection has a lot of problems on PC or as long as they don't add things to the story that weren't there or remove things from the story and the voice acting stays the same I'd be and am interested to see just how the remake is gonna be. Also having just finished the The Subsistence version of MGS 3 on a PCSX2 emulator the only little quality of life thing I'd like to see added to the remake that probably will be added cause what game doesn't have it now is the ability to move while crouched instead of having to either stand or crawl. The only thing that I think that needs completely redone is his swimming. For a guy that's had a lot of grueling military training he swims super slow and like he's almost never even been in water. Also Konami do not try to make us purchase any camo or costumes please. That a DLC/microtransaction pit waiting to be made. But I beat Subsistence today for the first time and it's a great game that honestly holds up insanely well for it's age but if they're gonna remake it I'd just like crouched movement and overhauled swimming that's completely different from the original game.
Here's a tip, when you show the settings that you used on the screen, it is so small no one can read it.

Hey, I remember there being an Nvidia Shield version of the HD collection, meaning that you can play MGS2 and 3 on mobile. Maybe try that with an Android emulator next time you make a MGS video.
Interestingly the codecs loaded slow on the actual PS3 as well! I wonder why this was
I believe it was related to the audio being uncompressed on the PS3's Blu-ray disc, which took longer to load
@@1Ocelot hmm that would make sense but the emulator doesn't have a bottleneck for the Blu-ray it's being read from the disk! Plus I'm sure the downloadable versions of the game still have the same issue
The pcsx2 page for MGS2 says that the skin texture issue is fixed in the dev builds. Did you use the "stable" build for this video?
I played both Metal Gear Solid 1 and 2 on my PC about two decades ago. I used a 750 mhz Pentium 3 processor with Windows 2000 and a Nvidia GeForce MX 400 64 mb video ram card and 256 mb RAM and a DVD drive. Metal Gear Solid 1 played like a charm (even on high settings) except for the Psycho Mantis boss fight. On the other hand, Metal Gear Solid 2 barely ran on that processor (the graphics and sound were choppy) and this was on lowest settings (12-15 fps average). Plus, the controls were terrible, it had bugs/glitches and it crashed every 40 minutes to an hour. Metal Gear Solid 2 technically requires 800 MHz Pentium III processor or faster but it is possible for slightly lower Pentium III processors like mine to play that game. Just make sure the computer has 256 mb ram and at a least 64 mb video ram card like mine and (Windows 2000 or XP [preferably Windows 2000]) plus DVD drive and enough hard disk space and it will install and run on lowest settings. Both were worth playing on the computer, but I prefer playing these games on the PlayStation 1 (MGS1) and PlayStation 2 (MGS2).
Bro I have 4gb ram, 192mb vram.. but the game crush when I open raiden mission.while the first cutscene plays it crashes
@@rajablaze619 --- Maybe it is because you have too much RAM and too much video ram for the original PC port. Also, MGS2 PC port is terrible itself (e.g., it has bugs/glitches and crashes from time to time) so maybe it is not your computer that is the problem. MGS2 PC port is a broken version of MGS2. I would prefer to play MGS2 on PS2 or XBOX let alone PS3 or XBOX 360 because MGS2 is more suitable on those platforms.
@@123ucr ok tq bro for the response 👍
I like the inclusion of a metal gear 2: solid snake song "Level 1 Warning" remix in the conclusions section. Who made that cool remix?
I believe it’s one of the VR tracks from MGS2: Substance. The action track for MGS1 Snake.
That's correct! It's from the MGS2 Substance soundtrack
@@Sora2314 thanks! I though mg2ss song remixes was a vr missions (psx) only thing. Glad to see substance has this too
You planning to do one of these for Metal Gear Rising?
Have any thoughts on the master collection?
When is the CPU tierlist for RPCS3 going to make it into the description?
Done. Sorry about that!
I have a question on PCSX2 for Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, will the cutscene have audio lag?
The camera mod is best used with radar off
You gotta revisit mgs4
Uh, funny, I just started emulating the HD collection on rpcs3 and it simply works flawlessly.
I also find this funny, as the HD collection for me runs at 20 fps. Then again, my CPU is 10 years old, but Xenia works no problems.
There's also the issue of pressure sensitive buttons, which are annoying to control (at least on my PS3 controller on real hardware)
@@awii.neocities yeah, rpcs3 is very cpu dependent, but even then i still use an older r3 2400g which im going to upgrade to a r7 5800x3d in some time, but for a lighter game like mgs it still works.
@@comiumapedra5397 The ps3s architecture is really complicated, so much so that even newer cpus can struggle emulating it. Though I was surprised how far you can get with a Hasell i5.
Yeah this game is intended for the PS2
Im trying to play it on PCSX2 but I get slowdows in the cutscenes and it messes up the audio. Any tips?
Hey, you're pretty good.
is the PCSX2 setting for an older version? I got a V 1.7.4240 and a V1.7.5236 and I can't find options like manuel hardware renderer fixes or bilinear dirty upscale
Great summary... i guess i am sticks to the ps2 version
framerate isn't very good tho?
i hope eventually modders can make the master collection version on par with the ps2 version. shame the hd collection was based on the xbox version 😔😔
Hopefully, the Master Collection wil fix all those problem (and the problem of HDC)
I am going to play all games (except fifth one) from ps3, is it a good decision?
Depth of field seems to be fixed in RPCS3, does it work now in MGS3?
I thought the PS2 had a wide screen settings in the boot up menu (System)?
What is your opinion on the remake that was announced today?
I'm cautiously optimistic. I'm more interested in the Master Collection.
Played the og version and now i'm crying because no skate minigame
Can you make a video on mgs portable ops?
bro is there any way to use mouse while aiming? (PCSX2)
This video came out a day before the ps5 announcement, looks like you’ll need to remake this video again this year 😅
Solid 2 HD and Solid 3 HD are coming to PC on October so this needs an update.
my big issue with GOG characters ghosting & repetition in cutscenes.. any help to solve it ??
Ocelot, can you do one explaining how to play P.T./Silent Hills demo on pc?
You can't.
Sure there are remakes, and even a PS4 emulator in development, but it's impossible to run P.T on anything but a modded PS4, or a PS4 that has downloaded it.
need a bit of help with the 60fps fix for the PC port, I don't exactly know how I'm supposed to apply it to the game
i play it with rpcs3 and the HD collection
Trying to play using PCSX2 on steam deck and can not for the life of me get the pressure sensitive modifier to work.
Edit: In steam deck desktop mode I have gotten pressure sensitive modifier to work by starting the game, going into PCSX2 controller settings and changing the modifier from the default of Keyboard/S to left stick click.
Can't for the HD Collection version to be repackaged as the Master Collection lol
i want to know what your version if pcsx2 is, i have 1.16, the latest stable version and my ui looks much more different so i cant seem to find the pressure toggle bind
It’s in the controller settings and then click bindings.
Would you recommend a Dualshock 4 controller for PCSX2?
Ds4Windows is a fantastic program which allows your pc to perceive your DS4 as a 360 controller. Using ds4Windows works great with pcsx2
A very strange note on that XEMU doesn't support pressure sensitivity. Actually only Playstation 2 and Playstation 3 Dualshocks were pressure sensitive. PS1 or PS4 or PS5 or any Xbox had no pressure sensitive buttons except triggers obviously. That feature is now may be remembered as a gimmick and was dropped eventually.
That's incorrect, the original Xbox had pressure sensitive buttons, as you can see here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xbox_(console)#:~:text=six%208%2Dbit%20analog%20action%20buttons%20(A/Green%2C%20B/Red%2C%20X/Blue%2C%20Y/Yellow%2C%20and%20Black%20and%20White%20buttons).
Also here are some people discussing pressure sensitivity on Xbox controllers: www.reddit.com/r/originalxbox/comments/ros46w/restoring_button_sensitivity_in_xbox_controllers/
so how can we play MGS2 and MGS3 properly with pressure sensitive on PC?
@@1Ocelot original Xbox, you mean the duke? Who cares? There was like 1.5 games that actually made use of it and they're probably nothing of interest. So technically you're right but my point is still the same.
Any chance of a video like this for MGS3?
Yeah, it's on his channel.
whats that controller overlay
The best way to play this again is on pc installation with subsistence camera mods.
This is so random, but this is my first time trying to play MGS 2 and i'm on the first part and I can't see my laser on pcsx2. Does anybody know a fix?
What about unlocked frame rate?
