      Since you were already in Düsseldorf, they have a suspension monorail too. It connects the railway station "Düsseldorf Airport" with the airport terminal.
      Another suspension monorail nearby is in Dortmund. The Route length is 3.162 km and it connects the suburb Eichlinghofen with various points at the TU Dortmund.
      Different to Wuppertal, both of these systems are driverless.

    For those wondering why the Wuppertaler Schwebebahn is the way it is: The Schwebebahn was built as such because Wuppertal is located in a river valley (that's what Wuppertal means; Wupper Valley), and because of steep slopes, the original towns that now makes up Wuppertal expanded lengthwise (resulting in the thin shape of Wuppertal today). It wasn't suitable to build a tram nor an underground subway, so as a way to both unify the valley and find a place for transit to solve congestion, they built a suspended monorail that followed the Wupper River (as shown on the map at 6:02).
    It's not a system unique to Wuppertal as like you mentioned, Japan as well as Memphis, TN, Dortmund, Düsseldorf Airport, Dresden, and recently Chengdu, China all have these, but of course, Wuppertal has the oldest suspended railway. And department stores in the US used to have mini-versions of these during the holiday season that took excited children through a wonderland to see Santa.

    While touring Germany in 2022, my wife and I made a special trip to Wuppertal just to ride the Schwebebahn. We did the whole line, from Oberbarmen to Vohwinkel and back, stopping off in the city centre for lunch, and had a great experience. Pity that Wuppertal is such a grimy industrial city though.

    I ❤️ architecture. I'm in the U.S., northern Minnesota by the Canadian border. Structures here are maybe 100 yrs old at the most - farmhouses, tiny schoolhouses, Lutheran churches & train stations. That's pretty much it where I live.

    • @JohnHazelwood58
      @JohnHazelwood58 Před rokem +1

      Don't get me wrong, but 100 years isn't "old" - well at least where I come from (good "old" Germany). The oldest building in my surrounding is over 800 years old, but I know that there are even older buildings in Germany. I think the oldest building dates back to the year 1097! If I did my math right, we are talking about a house which is older than 925 years! :)
      Btw: The first ride of the "Wuppertaler Schwebebahn" was back in 1901. So this "flying traing" is even older than 100 yrs. That's just as a side note! :)

    • @HelloOnepiece

    • @JohnHazelwood58
      @JohnHazelwood58 Před rokem

      Germans even have a word for it: "Altstadt" (< translt. "old city") as they have old cities with old buildings!? o_O Over 800 (!) very old cities survived the "oopsie" and a lot of houses / buldings, too. I just need to take a look out of my window and see a huge building from 1219. Compared: When was the USA discovered? 1492 ... so: you won't find such a building there, I guess?! o_O Otherwise Disney would have picked an american castle as the "sleeping beauty castle" and not a german casle, which was built in 1884 ... btw.: you can still visit it! It's open for tourists! :)

      @idot3331 Před rokem +3

      @@JohnHazelwood58 Yeah I think that's their point. Beyond a few places in New England, all American architecture is relatively very modern, at least when compared to Europe. Because of this, they're saying that they appreciate the older architecture of Europe more. You seem to have missed the whole point of their comment and have gone on a rambling tangent in a weird bragging tone about how old your country's buildings are. I live in the UK with plenty of very old buildings, but most people just take them for granted. Living in an old city isn't really something to brag about, it's just wherever you happen to be born.

    • @vivianpowell1732
      @vivianpowell1732 Před rokem

      @@JohnHazelwood58 Americans understand that the buildings in our country are not as old as those in Europe and other parts of the world. We don't need that lecture. The town I live in on the East Coast of the United States was founded in 1670, and my home is less than 3 miles from the landing site. So I am fortunate to be able to have and share this relatively long history of my old parish.

      Of course, people will complain again, because it's "way too expensive". That's a strange attitude, considering what a monthly ticket on local public transport currently costs. A monthly ticket in my city with local transport currently already costs 77 euros.

    I know the older one (the orange and blue one 72 model), because when I was young my grandma used to take trips with me to the Zoo in Wuppertal, and of course it always included rides with the Schwebebahn. I totally loved it! A bit pity the newer model isn't as reliable as the old one and does often have cancelled rides, because of technical problems.

    • @5thElem3nt
      @5thElem3nt Před rokem

      Well, most of the problems have nothing to do with the new trains. First a power rail fell down, than the track was damaged. And they have problems with the ne control system all the time. But the control system is not part of the new trains. The trains could work with the old system, too.

    Ja die Schwebebahn gibt es schon seit über 100 Jahren, aber, ab 1997 wurde die gesamte Strecke erneuert und die Bahnhöfe saniert.
    Yes, the suspension railway has been around for over 100 years, but from 1997 the entire route was renewed and the stations renovated.

    Love the elephant! I thought it was just graffiti until you mentioned the story. Tuffi ftw! 🐘

    Danke! I like your videos about travelling by train, ferry and so on so much. I found your channel, because I'm so interested in Japan and want to go there soon. But your videos about Europe are special, too. I have now so many inspirations. Thank you for including Germany! You do always a great job! 👏

    Its cool. The mechanism on top (the rotating wheels like thing) seems like something out of machine city of movie Matrix.

    The train is beautiful. When I was in Europe I didn't get a chance to go into Germany wish I'd known this I could have rode the rails. So Kuga within the next 5 years if you decide to come to United States especially come to south Louisiana or even New Orleans. Let me know I'll show you around my state. Where you can experience two Cajun culture and party in New Orleans. Just not during Mardi gras. If my health allows it and if I'm not in Tokyo around that time cuz I do plan to go there. Since you're from Tokyo can you do like a helpful guy to the understanding the subway system there. I've been to New York City and it looks more complicated than the Big Apple subway system. It is the biggest city in the world but also the cleanest. Take care and have fun can't wait for you next video
