    One thing about the R50 that not many people point out is the inability to use a regular flash with it. If you pay close attention, it doesn't have the contacts to allow a regular flash to trigger. Instead, you need to use Canon's new proprietary flash. So, a hobbyist thinking about using flash photography on a budget should still consider the M50 for that purpose.

    A couple of years ago I "downgraded" from a well used 7D to an M2 and then an M50. I have a nice, but not complete, assortment of M lenses, as well as my EF L telephotos. I thought even though Canon was killing off the M series, I could go for quite a while before I would have to upgrade to an $$R$$...with the R50 it seems like it might not be as far away as I thought!

  • @barbaranostrand4214

    The R50 is basically an M50 Mk III with an R lens mount instead of an M lens mount. Canon has decided to support only one lens mount which makes sense from a corporate point of view. However, despite the hype in the video above, 1080P at 24, 25, 30, or 60 fps is more than adequate for pretty much anyone who only plans on owning one camera as 1080P is the broadcast standard and 4K is far greater resolution than is of practical value on most computer screens, all cell phones, and most people viewing large screen televisions. Resolutions above 4K are primarily for theatrical release. While a fun effect, slo-mo just isn't used all that much. If you actually need high speed video, then it is probably better to rent specialized equipment for the project. The R50 has improved autofocus which is primarily of use to amateurs. Derisively branding either the M50 or the R50 as a beginner camera is disingenuous as great photographs and videos have been produced with far less capable equipment. And, you can easily produce crap using Arriflex and Hassleblad equipment.

    I'm a kickboxer and jiujitsu practitioner. At my gym we tend to record using our phones in order to go back and reference certain moments in training and offer advice, critique, etc. Lately we've been having issues where our phones are simply unable to capture certain moments with the clearness that we'd like, usually due to the fact we're moving too fast for the iphone 10 or so to be able to catch the moments we really want to focus on. I've been looking at getting a dedicated camera for recording as well as for my own personal foray into photography. What sort of specs should I be looking at and what camera would would you suggest?

    • @connormccaskill
      @connormccaskill  Před rokem

      Hey man, that's sounds pretty cool! It's difficult to recommend anything specific without knowing a budget. That said, if clarity is the issue, I would look for something that can record in 4k at 60fps and then pair it with a decent optic. The thing is, it can get really expensive quick. Maybe consider a camera that is not super new that way you can save a bit buying it second hand. Hopefully this is helpful

  • @realworldaudio
    @realworldaudio Před rokem +29

    Thank you, I am glad to see the two side by side! I have the M50 mark II, and got it 1 month before R50 came out... :( Also, while I love the M50, I am also thinking of uprgading it as it fares not well in low light situations (photos get grainy fast already at ISO800, and significant loss in dynamic range, while 1080p videos are useful even in ISO1600). I am using it for both video and photos. I use only the 1080p from a stand, and I am perfectly happy with the video performance as far as picture quality and focusing. Also, the mic input makes a tremendous impact. So, it is the perfect camera for my little YT channel. Also, I can take it with me to shoot photos. While the M lens series is now "outdated", they have the advtnatge that neither the EF nor the RF lenses have: COMPACTNESS. (Funny though that the much older EF lenses are not called outdated.. it's just a question of framing. I think there's nothing outdated about the smallest and lightest lenses ever for Canon EOS cameras.)
    The strength of the M50 is the tiny form factor, the ability to take quality shots in daylight conditions without packing an intrusive monster. With the EF-M 22mm lens, it is as tiny as a point and shoot camera, and you can even put in in your pocket and take everywhere with you. To me, that is the #1 strength of the 50 series. And that's what is lost when we go to the R series, as the R lenses are monsters of a beast, the huge lens defeats the very purpose of the tiny body. Even the relatively smaller RF-S lenses are much bigger than the EF-M counterparts, and more expensive as well. Better optical quality though, but if I am looking for a significant quality jump from the M50, I would want to go for a full frame R model and the full frame heavy and bulky RF lenes. However commendable, I find the R50 a misfire, if I were to jump up from the M50 it would be the RP or the R for photos only, and likely the R8 if I also wanted to use it for videos as well and get it at a sane price. Also, for those who do not have either camera yet, I would still recommend the M50: the real reason for me to get either M50 or R50 VS the more expensive R models are the price and compactness - and the M50 (considering the lens as well) fares much better in both categories. For a real step-up from he M50, I'd go with the RP/R (for photos mainly) or R8 (video and sports)...

    • @connormccaskill
      @connormccaskill  Před rokem +3

      Hey fair points! I always did enjoy how compact the EF-M lenses were. I suppose I’m looking at this comparison from the perspective of someone who already owns RF glass. The RP would potentially be a great full frame upgrade from the M50. Probably could snag it for a solid price on eBay. Thanks for stopping by the channel

      I have the M50 and the RP, I Also use the R from time to time. I like actually to shoot with the RP for family stuff and private events, but be clear that dynamic range is even inferior to the M50. Also the battery life is not better if not even worse. Image Quality was much better on the R but I didn’t like the handling and layout. A bonus is that you can charge the new cameras with usb-c, which is for me quite a big deal, when I am traveling. I still love the M50 and it is such a shame that there never was a decent standard zoom lens. If I had to buy a new camera from Canon (I don’t do video) it would be definitely the R8 or maybe R6II for the better ergonomics and battery life. Maybe also a used R6 mk1.

    • @realworldaudio
      @realworldaudio Před rokem

      @@diegodivers Thank you, that was superb information! I did not expect that the M50 would beat the RP in dynamic range. So, the M50 is not so bad after all. My main issue with it is that it does not handle low light well at all. Has difficulty with focusing and ISO noise is quite rough beyond 2000. Also, thank you for the tip on the super short battery life of the RP. A lot to take in, thank you!

I can see why the R50 would be the better choice for people who don't have a camera yet since I almost paid the same amount for the M50 at the time, especially when you can use the R-lenses in the future when you upgrade to the R6 (which I am planning on doing).
    Using the M50 for CZcams and Instagram content is really more than enough with the prime lenses I'm using. As long as people keep asking which camera I'm using for my content I will keep using my M50 until I'm experiencing true limitations.

      Get the R50. It has better autofocus, which is exactly what you want for shooting children that are *always* moving.
      But get it with a prime lens (RF 16mm f2.8 or 24mm f1.8). Starting with a prime lens will help you become a better photographer much faster. If you have a specialist camera store near you, have them explain the prime lens thing to you (skip the general electronics stores, they are usually clueless).
      Simply put: for shooting children you want the best autofocus possible and for shooting people in general you want a lens that creates shallow depth of field for more likeable photos.

      Both are relatively different. If you are looking for the easiest camera to use, the Canon R50 is the way to go. The Fujifilm will be a bit more of a pain to use, but it has some fun personality and style. Either way, buy whichever one makes you happiest!

      @@jetardeshna3449 I think the M50 Mk1 is becoming a little dated now; used, for 500 eur I don't think is a great bargain and your money may be better spent on another model, but then it depends what features you are personally seeking and what you want to use it for. The M mount is being discontinued and it seems like the future is with their R range looking forward. The one thing that the R50 is missing is the one lens that made the M50 a category killer: the EF-M 22 mm f/2.0 STM. Until and unless Canon releases an RF mount equivalent, the R50 is an also-ran. Right now, the M50 MkII with the 22 mm lens is still unbeatable for a compact camera with a proper viewfinder.

But the same time I'm sad because they completely abandoned the entire M line up. The m line had one specific type of lens that other companies should make and that was its 32mm f1.4. I'm planning releasing a video soon on why the m50 would still be a good buy then following it up with that specific lens and why more camera manufactures to make lenses similar to that
