Bach - Ich ruf zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ BWV 639 - Van Doeselaar | Netherlands Bach Society

- There is far more happening in the simple chorale prelude 'Ich ruf zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ' BWV 639, performed here by Leo van Doeselaar for All of Bach, than would appear at first hearing. Still waters run deep. The slow, gentle melody of Agricola’s 16th-century hymn ‘Ich ruf zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ’ is supported by the pedal in a calmly progressing accompaniment.

Wonderful, one of my favourite pieces since I discovered it through Tarkovsky’s Solaris
I could have written the same comment.

Everytime I'm going down to see some comments I see lot of people who doesn't speak Russian are familiar with Tarkovskiy, I'm so glad.

This simple piece is proof that Bach did not require complexity to convey emotion and musical beauty.
Maybe short, but not really that simple I would say
It looks simple because it is perfect, but this is not that simple.
It doesn’t sound complex because Bach made it sound effortless. Which is why it sounds simple. And it is in those simple, yet supremely musical pieces that Bach shines as the greatest composer, like the F sharp major Prelude from the First Well Tempered Clavier.
It sounded simple to me too, until I started learning it on an organ with 2 manuals and a pedal 😂
You can buy a whole bookshelf full of musicological literature on this piece alone.
If it sounds simple it's because Bach always kept the average listener in mind, trying to make his music as accessible as possible.
Beautiful. This is one of the pieces I chose for my wife's funeral in August 2021

Mr Schoeberlein, sorry for you loss!
Me and my siblings chose this piece for our father´s funeral as well!
Sorry for your loss
This piece is a dagger to the heart. And this rendition is utterly perfect.
Right. Today I’ve accidentally heard this masterpiece in a church. It is an Orthodox one, with a lot of icons and candles. It’s been something.

It's impressive how powerful this piece is. I listen to this everytime since I discovered Bach through Andrei Tarkovsky's films.
I love Bach's melancholy pieces.
One of Bach's most meltingly gorgeous compositions.

Like many times before, Bach takes an ancient theme, destined to be lost to time, and makes it timeless. The unusual case of a titan (Bach), standing on the shoulders of a common man (Agricola).
Such a big instrument and such a soft interpretation !
Probably one of the best new, historically built organs on the planet. All credit and appreciation goes to the Flentrop team back at the time the organ was created.
Yep. About twenty old pipes is all they had to go on. The rest has had to be reconstructed from historical models elsewhere and photographs of the original.
This is among the best interpretations

for as much as i have a distaste for what religion can do to people, there's a certain level of respect it commands even out of my atheist mind. it can inspire some of the greatest works of art I've seen, and even join some of them.
Wow I‘m speechless, this is incredibly beautiful❤️😍 As a pianist I know this piece via the transcription for Piano by Busoni. And actually I don‘t like the sound of an Organ. But this is pure beauty😍😍
Leo Van Doeselaar is obviously seriously enamored with the music of JSB...easy to understand, and this is a great performance of an incredible piece of Bachian genius. Anyone else wish they could have been a page turner, or registration assistant, for the "Old Wig"? Dang, I wouldn't have asked for a thaler. Come to think of it, I would have paid for the great honor.

Sublime
Beautiful. As is Dinu Lipatti's interpretation of this piece on piano. Very different because of the percussive nature of the piano, but sublime.
Wonderful. This piece reminds me of the Harrowing of Hell. Everyone should turn back at some point in their lives to listen to this. No matter how insignificant things seem to be, it’s not over. When your woes are many, through all silence, begin introspection. I love Bach.

I like how the comments here are either genuine passion for Bach's music or ULTRAKILL references. Both are acceptable.
Bach is, by far, the best musician ever and a great believer in God and his son Jesus Christ. Curiously, opening the competition to occupy the position of director of the music school and the church of Saint Thomas in Leipzig, several musicians presented themselves. After the presentation of the respective works, Johann Sebastian Bach occupies sixth place. Due to different reasons, the five before him resigned, Bach did accept the position of school and church musician. Councilman Platz observed in the final committee session that, "since we can't get any of the best musicians we will have to choose a mediocre one." What an unfair and lapidary phrase! How many times are people's lives decided in this way!Bach's music is that of a huge believer in Christian dogmas. Most of his works have the following inscription at the beginning: I.I (Iesus iuva: Jesus help me) and ends with S.D.G (Soli Deo Gloria: only glory to God). Such was Bach's faith that, in the words of his son Carl Phillip Emanuel Bach, "the whole family began daily activities by praying the creed."
What? How can this be...
@@screenplayer3934 Incredible but true. But that has happened with the greatest geniuses: not only Bach, but Schubert, Mozart, Beethoven, Van Gogh, etc., etc. They have not been known and valued until at least 50 years have passed since their death.
This makes me feel like i've taken everything away from someone and they've turned into perfect hatreds.
