- Join me for a behind the scenes tour around the Central Tramway Funicular Cliff Railway in South Bay, Scarborough. We take a look inside the engine room at all the workings to drive the funicular up and down the hill, we also get underneath the track and inside the control room to operate the tramway.

Thanks everyone for your lovely comments and thanks to Darren for visiting us and sharing this fantastic video. You can learn more about the tramway at www.centraltramway.co.uk/ as well as discovering our self-published books and school educational resources. We hope to see you soon at Central Tramway, Scarborough.
Yes, and thank you for having me. It was a pleasure.
I have pinned the comment to the top, so everyone can read it.
@@AdventureMe Fantastic - thanks Darren, and you've inspired us to share more of our videos too!
My sister and I were down there last Saturday (4/6/22) - we rode the tram up at around half four - we rode in the right car going up - left if you go down - first time I have ever been on one - pleasant ride, it was!
@@centraltramway I went on this years ago . I remember the blue livery. Great to see it still running
Good lass Helen.
Oh yes. Very nice.
It's great that this tramway has been owned by the same family for so long, continuity is a wonderful thing. The fact that it has been brought up to a more modern standard without spoiling it's appearance and you only have to see it for real and ride on it to appreciate how well kept and maintained it is.
Yes it is a breath of fresh air
Great vlog again Darren was good to see. Thanks also to Helen for reaching out to you and inviting you back to show us all the inner workings
Yes. She was lovely
Fascinating! It's good to see how squeaky clean the engine room is. Pride in the job! A real collectors' item, long may it survive.
Yes it's immaculate
I was fascinated as a kid by the wedge, which opens the car door along with the station one.
The control box used to have a wonderful brass drum-type controller, with Up and Down notches each side of the central Stop position.
I don't know why the 'modernisers' can't see that such things are worth preserving. To me, they are a fundamental part of the whole system.
The Central Tramway is fantastic and the staff are brilliant, we visit Scarborough at least once a year and use the tramway around 4 times a day.
They are so lovely.
How delightfully quaint. So nice of the Central Tramway to invite you to film the operating system.
Thanks mate. More to come
This takes me back. I've been in Scarborough once when I holidayed in Butlins Filey. It was in the 70's before I started school, but I do remember being on this funicular train.
Thanks for watching, more to come.
This is a must to see when we come over to the UK.
Yes you must.
Brilliant video, been on it many many times, it’s a fascinating homage to the Victorian age, and great to see how well the owners have preserved this unique and wonderful Scarborough attraction 👌🏻👍
Glad you enjoyed it
I remember going on one of these in Scarborough, can't remember which one when I was a child. It's lovely to see they are still working and going strong! A great piece of History from you again.
What an opportunity. Great of them to offer you access. Thanks for the ride.
Yes I couldn't resist
Being allowed to ride in one of the trams was always one of the highlights of my childhood holidays in Scarborough. I remember the bottom station always seemed to smell of candyfloss. Very happy memories, thanks for this vid.
Thanks for watching.
Always do this ride everytime we are in scarby...cracking vid👌
It's got to be done
Gets better & better every week. Thanks
Thanks Ste.
We need more of this please!!!! Fascinating behind the scenes workings, good to see the old and new working together. Thanks to Helen and the rest of the crew. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Plenty more coming
Great video, Darren. Very interesting to see the workings of the tram. And Helen is a great ambassador, very charming and funny 😊
She is lovely
This video brought back some crazy memories
Nice to see behind the scenes Darren and the lovely Helen thanks
Thanks Jim
Similar to the ones at Hastings. Another excellent documentary. I believe the one in Hastings works on filling water tanks under the tram
Yes it does Keith. The one further down the road from this one does too.
Sadly the Saltburn cliff lift (water powered) has been closed due to COVID untill next season. So great to see Scarborough is getting back to life.
Thank you for arranging the restricted tour. An amazing tram still in use. Another great tour, Darren. Cheers mate! 🇬🇧🙂👍🇺🇸
Thanks Martin
The motor and gearbox are exactly like a lif system (elevator) with a worm drive gearbox.(my last job involved lifts)
Even dow to the 4 cables on the cars and the safety cable, if the safety cable stretches too much it drops some latchs to stop the cars going down at high speed, there's probably a speed detector on the safety cable as well that does the same, apart from the incline, the only difference is that one car would be a balance weight
The squealing you hear is more likely to be the electronic control which turns the motor into a speaker which is why you hear it., the electronic control is called a 'variable frequency drive'
Thanks mate. Sounds like a lift system then yeah.
Fantastic video, went up and down on this wonderful railway in 2019, Thanks for the behind the scenes, amazing to see , and what a wonderful lady Helen is, thanks again will have to try and get back soon.
Yes she was lovely. You should pay another visit
Love Scarborough so much, enjoyed many holidays there as a kid and always used the funiculars. Cracking video 😊
Thanks carol
Great stuff, really good to see these old funiculars being maintained and operated to this day. 👍
Yes we'll looked after
Been on that lots of times its so much quicker to get to the bottom near the front. Aw Helen seems like a beautiful lovely lady.
What a beauty example, and how well its been run . Helen was so nice and helpful to .was it still her family who own it.
She was fantastic. No she just works there.
Absolutely outstanding. You have done it again. Brilliant. So much appreciated. Thank you.
You are very welcome
Been up and down lot's of times the Tramway over the years great to see the workings great video Darren
Glad you enjoyed it
Another wonderful video . Love the cream and red livery One of my first summer jobs was working in the cafe at the tram station. I struggled with the ice cream machine and blocked it up with my useless attempts at ice cream cones! 😁
Thanks Dave
I remember I was little boy with grandpa + grandma been there Scarborough and Central Tramway and sand sea are beautiful places from back about 1965 or 1966. I will go there Scarborough one day and remember it. From Manchester 🇬🇧
Thanks for watching, more to come.
Darren you jammy sod getting a special behind the scene look around. Loved when you said the motor wouldn't fit in a a Ford Escort!!! That takes me back to when a Ford Cortina was a popular car (showing my age now) suitable for boy racers 😎 the usual catch phrase of when a bus/truck etc was being driven fast was 'what's he driving a Cortina GT' 😀
Stay safe, DougT the Mancs pensioner
I had a ford escort. Great car.
Nice video, and Helen is GORGEOUS!!!
Haven't been to Scarborough since 2001 did go on the railway though nice to see the mechanism 🙂
Excellent video Darren, and a big thanks to Helen and the team for behind the scenes access. 👍🏼
Yes. They were lovely
Scarborough looked wonderful. We had many happy holidays there when I was young. I went on the Central Tramway a few times. So glad it is still working. Interesting video, thanks.
Yep still going strong.
Great to see the inner workings of the tram. Have been multiple times to Scarborough and rode on this tram. Thanks to Helen for showing you around so we get to see it too. Great video Darren, keep up the great work.
Thanks dan
Fantastic video, used the tram on our last years holiday.
Thanks for watching
Brilliant. I know where I am going on my next visit to Scarborough.
Yes please do.
One of the delights when going to Scarborough was going on the funicular
And mine
Many happy memories of riding on that funicular with mum and dad - my first time on it was at 3 months old!
Me too
Had a late Aunt that was born in Scarborough, definitely on my bucket list to visit one day and the Central Tramway, thanks for great video Darren..
You should!
Hey Darren
It reminds me of the Angels Flight in Los Angeles. It’s similar in length and function.
There’s two in Hastings, although East Hill has not been working on the last few times I’ve visited. The West Hill version is unique as it travels through a brick built tunnel on its way to the castle.
Lovely video. Thanks for sharing ❤️👍
Thanks Robin. I've just sent you an emai.
This video is absolutely awesome. I'll deff be asking for Helen on my next trip there 👍👍👍
Yes do. Shes lovely
Thanks Helen. Love your work
If you love this one, then you will certainly love the Lynton and Lynmouth one.
about 5 times as long, and everything has been kept the same since Victorian days. Beautiful piece of engineering.
Great vid Darren , good to get the opportunity to see the workings behind the scene .
Yes it was lovely
Excellent video as always, love funicular railways.
Unsual configuration of the tracks though, bullhead (95R) S1 chairs, flatbottom rail (113LB), with bracing around what look like Scotches (Used to secure the points rails from moving in crossings) securing the rail in place. Talk about a mash up, but it does work well and has for 140 years.
By the way I had a Ford Escort MKii RS Mexico lol
Thanks Stefan. Can't beat a good old Escort.
Fascinating stuff, not been on that tramway for years, great video, tfs 😊
Thanks Alison
Fabulous thanks for making and showing us, must email Helen for a look round.
Excellent video Darren And congrats on reaching 20k subscribers
Thank you so much 😀
OH NO .!!!?....the guys" reached out to me" ??.how about "contacted me". Great video as always...thankyou. ps ...the sea looks wonderful!
I'm down with kids Neil lol
Wow I was going up in that tram several times in September, was on a break with my mate staying at the Royal (😂)
Fantastic to see all the backroom stuff and workings. Thanks Helen for letting us see it all, thanks Daren yet again very detailed and interesting video. 😎🤩
Thanks Sue.
Really enjoyed this, congrats on 20k
Glad you enjoyed it!
Brilliant video as always, thanks Darren
Very welcome
My missus is afraid of heights. I took her on the funicular from the beach. She was fuming with me! It's a wonderful thing. This and the bigger one up the Great Orme in North Wales.
Yeah I bet she was terrified.
Thoughly enjoyed this video love the trams, reminds me of the one in san fransisco going up the iconic road which features in many car chase scenes in movies, love all the classic stuff.
Such a cool place. Would love to have a look in the future :)
Thanks
Great stuff again! Thank you!
Thanks Sean
Thanks for a great video.
Thanks Simon
Another interesting Vlog thank you
Thanks Roger
The motor & gearbox setup is just like a vertical traction lift, it's also had a VF drive fitted at sometime that gives the motor that horrible noise.
Yes someone else said the same.
Great video, thanks
Thanks sam
thanks that waas enjoyable and hope to see helen next year ,
Yes, be sure to call in.
Great video
Thanks robin.
Nice gesture showing you around 👍
Yes they were lovely
Good on ya Helen!
Brilliant 🤩
Thanks for watching.
Great video.....🌹
Thanks Julie
Fab insight. Many thanks. …….
Thanks Karen
Very Cool
Thanks Mike
Excellent ..
Thanks John
The Victorians made some amazing machines. This uses very little power a small motor moving all that machinery by the way the cars are balanced. I went on these many times in the past and remember them being put in the middle at night. I think it must of closed earlier in those days. Interesting the other one is still powered by water. I will have a ride on this next time I go to Scarborough, save my legs a bit
Fantastic video Darren me and my fiance are going next year for a week in Scarborough so will defo take a look
Yes check it out. Fantastic place
As a Child I holidayed in Scarborough and would have rode on all of the Tramways, I believe there were 3or4 at one time from the age of 3/4. Also the one at Saltburn by the Sea. As my Grandmother came from Saltburn. The Zealand Hotel in Saltburn was unique, as it had its own Railway Platform. As you can probably tell I am from a Railway Family. My Father was a Driver in the days of Steam as was his uncle. My Grandfather was a Signalman. I just love anything to do with Railway, especially the History.
Thanks Alan. Plenty of Railway history videos on my channel.
Lovely!
Thanks Michael
A great video, as ever but, sorry to be pedantic, the machine marked 'Radicon' is the gearbox. The motor is off to the right. Fascinating stuff!
Yeah I kinda realised that later.
@@AdventureMe I commented too soon before watching the complete video, then saw that you had corrected that later on. Sorry.
Very interesting to this old Scarborian
Thanks Pete
This tramway helped to prop up Rotherham United for many years when Eric Pursehouse was the chirman.
Glad it had some use other than what it does. lol
Very interesting.
Thanks Michael
You never fail to
Ment to say you never dissapoint
Thanks Michael.
Darren super vid Darren 👌 👏 😍
Thanks andy
Nice lass Helen, I hope her surname isn’t “Back” 🤦🏼♂️
Thanks Daz, you push all my buttons mate ✔️👍🏼
More railway please. Ta 😊
So kool
Beautiful
Thanks mate
Used to be 10p a ride when i was at school
I have just sent you an Email about an event you might be interested in happening in Keighley this coming Friday🙂 Great Vides again.
Awesome thank you!
Hi Darren, just found your channel, and wondering if it’s possible to a behind the scenes of the Peasholme Park battle. Phil
Thanks Phil. I was there last week, but not for that. I would if they asked me to.
6:00 sounds like traction motors off the cl333's
been to scarborough loads of times darren but never been on that
You should give it a whirl
Darren, would you consider doing a Hadrian’s Wall series?
That's a good shout.
@@AdventureMe 👍😀😀😀
What you pointed at wasn't the motor! That would be the reduction gearbox - the motor was to the right and drives a worm gear in the gearbox. This then turns a worm wheel gear and the wheel off the shaft.
Thanks Alexis
@@AdventureMe No worries - I saw you got it right later on in the video - but feel you may have missed an important bit of info in terms of the gearbox and how it effectively acts as a safety mechanism. The Worm Wheel cannot drive the Worm Gear (screw) - so when the motor brakes it effectively stops the main flywheel from turning. It means that when they stop the cars, there's no risk of the cars moving back down if one was higher, once the motor slows the flywheel down it would prevent any movement. Interestingly when the motor stops it can't fully stop, it actually has to keep turning as the flywheel brakes as if the motor stopped things within the gearbox would get very upset!
@@cyberprog That must be a triple-start worm drive, otherwise stopping the motor would smash the gearbox.
@@tooleyheadbang4239 I said that :)
There one in like that in technology center in North Wales powered by water the same as that one have to come visit behind it I ride it in 2019 and 2018 the both of them
Fabulous video as usual but you well have to get to The Lynton & Lynmouth Cliff Railway in Devon it is water powered and dose not need electricity.
It is the only water powered in the UK and there is only 3 in the world
John from Dudley
Thanks John. I'll have a gander at it.
Saltburn, on the Yorkshire coast, IS in the UK!
big old buzz in way mama
👍👍👍😊
Coolbeens
Love that phrase
The only cliff lift that's using Bullhead rail, I see.
David Brown Radicon gearbox . 5:40 So called because it liste the 3 ways the gearbox loses its heat. RADiation DIssipation, and CONvection!
Fascinating stuff. Thanks
David Brown, of course, being the famous tractor designer.
I think he made something for James Bond, too!
