  • DID YOU KNOW YOU COULD FLIP YOUR RING GEAR?
In this video, I show you an old school method to "flip" your ring gear, no special tools required, just a box, a lighter and a little elbow grease.
Question: How long do you heat it?
Answer: Till the fire goes out.
Question:How hot do you get it?
Answer: as hot as the fire gets.
Don't over think it, It's that simple.

    nice tip,
I dome that on many old cars and never had a trouble with that.I use a kitchen oven setted to 400 deg F to heat the ring gear.
The thing I'll add is to check carefully the starter motor engagement gear for damaged teeth tip, this usually goes with damaged ring gear.

You can always bake a cake and put the ring gear in the oven with it. 45 minutes on 350°.

Love it Danny, great tip. Best trick I've ever seen. Sure beats polishing several spots with scotchbrite/emery and trying to get an even temp all around by colour change...also no chance of overheating and ruining the hardness👍🇦🇺

This is kind of like the idea of putting a motorcycle head in the oven upside down, at 500 degrees held up with 2x4s so that when it gets to the right temp, the cylinder jugs will drop out of the head for replacement. Not sure if they can be installed in the opposite direction or not, I never tried it, just read it in the cycle manual...
Now after watching this video, even though I no longer have my old but sweet 1963 Corvair Van with a three-speed standard transmission, I now wonder if I could have done this to replace the ring gear on it, as the ring gear on the standard trans. in the Corvair, is mounted to the "pressure plate", not a torque converter, so they called it the pressure plate flywheel. Yep, now that is really eating at me. It seems the ring gear on that was spot-welded to the pressure plate, it has been so long ago. But it kept breaking the starter nose cone.

Damn it, that's real old school!; when i'd smoked pre-made cigarettes (Davidoff black before it was retired from the market) indoors... used to last me almost 6mins, outdoors... a bit over 4mins. Now that i smoke black rolling tobacco, one indoors lasts me like 15mins and outdoors... like 11, or 12 depending on the wind etc; if those time windows/scales help. The important part i think is that i didn't knew that you change/flip the ring gear or get a new one for less than 30€, i though it was part of the flywheel... two new things that i'd learnt this tuesday.

Love the old school tips. It was informative, educational AND entertaining. You made me want marshmallows with that “reindeer”. How about electricity? Could you hot wire it? Or would it get too melty in places? How about the Texas asphalt? Pizza oven could work. How about an old cast iron stove? Oops, too far. ⭕️ Naw, the tried and true box on fire is a controlled dose of heat. 📦 🔥 👍
