    Today, the pros use coatings and tighten the clearances. The coatings absorb the oil to dampen the piston rocking. If knurling were the answer, why don't the manufacturers do it? You are fifty years in the past.

    • @MrDanielSoliz
      @MrDanielSoliz Před dnem

      We most definitely do, I never said this is what we do to new pistons or a new build. The title does say this is what Smokey used to do. If tightening up the clearance to keep the piston from rocking didn’t work why do all the manufacturers do it. We learn from the pass. #Smokeybelongs

    I put my shims in the bottom of the spring cup instead of underneath it because I didn’t see any way of keeping them in place otherwise. Did I do it wrong? Mine weren’t as wide as those (used Howard’s shims). The fit perfectly in the spring cup and were about as wide as the spring.

    Tip of the day: Don’t use heli-coils for things like this- the alternatives cost the same amount but work 10x better.. they fail at a fraction of the original spec- emergency only😅 things like ez loc are better if your ez-coil level lazy , if can find the long(deep) ones but I recommend some called ‘timecert’ I think it is? You just cut to depth and they come with a chamfered neck and a installation tool to sit perfectly flush

    The reason it works so well is it allows for a thicker film of oil to build up on the Piston skirts

    • @appliedspeed9831
      @appliedspeed9831 Před dnem

      Actually, it is because the grooves and valleys in the knurling retain oil. The right way to do this is to use a plateau cylinder bore finish, thin rings and tight pistons in the bore. coatings.czcams.com/video/M9UTOUZOD2E/video.html

    How do you pull the rocker studs out my good Sir, and how do you remove the studs out of an aluminum head without destroying them

    • @MrDanielSoliz
      @MrDanielSoliz Před dnem

      The studs on all aluminum head screw in, now on cast iron you put a bunch of spacers and use a nut to tighten down and then start pulling the stud up and out.

  • @modquad18

    Trying to understand how this works. Does the knurling help block oil from reaching the rings?

    • @MrDanielSoliz
      @MrDanielSoliz Před dnem

      The knurling does two things it holds oil and that lets you run a tighter piston to wall clearance which keeps the piston from rocking, keeping the ring end gap tighter. Less blow by, making more power.
