The $1,000 LEGO Star Wars Darth Vader Minifigure & Why I Bought It.

  • Rare LEGO Star Wars sets & Minifigures have only become more and more expensive in the last 5 years. I have let some amazing items slip through my fingers because of my unwillingness to break the bank. But as a collector you sometimes get screwed by waiting too long to buy simething and the 2005 Toy Fair Darth Vader is one of those things for me.

      I collected all the Lego Batman 06-08 sets back in around 2011-2013 and honestly the prices have gotten lower on almost all those sets as Lego has made sooo many more Batman sets since bringing the line back in 2012. Arkham asylum 06 used to be a 500 dollar set used 800 dollar set new and now goes for 240 used and 400 new on average. The OG ucs batmobile goes for like 150 these days and the og tumbler from 08 is now like 150-200 instead of 400 like it once was. They still are expensive but not nearly as expensive as they once were.

    That bricklink listing is from a seller (uber bricks) that frequently sells star wars items for insanely high prices. I keep seeing that store pop up when i try to find canadian sellers, and the prices they have there are about 2-3x higher than they should be for pretty much every item

    There was a time right after I graduated High School, where I sold ALL of my Legos bc I was broke (early 2000s sets :/). I think of this almost everyday, I didn't do research and definitely sold them for a huge loss. The past few years Ive really rebuilt my collection and I think as an adult now, Ive really started to see Lego as an investment just as much as it is a hobby. This video really makes me feel good about my collection and the potential worth it will retain. If youre ever considering selling your collection, take it from someone that once did and dont, it could potentially change your life in the future.

    • @markvieyra9950

      Just as a question, I got into lego again now in my mid twenties after being in love with it as a kid (mostly Star Wars and bionicle). Now that I can buy sets almost whenever, I also want to dive a bit into investing in lego while it being a hobby. Do you still treat it as a hobby first and then buy extra sets to invest, or a mix of both?

    • @Tom-me3vn
      @Tom-me3vn Před 2 lety +3

      @@markvieyra9950 this is purely my opinion so don’t take it as straight fact but here’s my suggestion. Collecting LEGO should be just what that is, collecting them for display or to ‘play’ with. Selling sets should only be done if you need the extra cash, if you don’t have enough room to display some sets, or if you want someone else to have the joy of building that particular set as you once did. It’s entirely up to you if you want to sell or just keep many sets and let them go up in value. For now I would just steadily get a set maybe once in a while, take your time with it and don’t go crazy. Because obviously as I’m sure you’re aware also, it can be very very expensive. Hope this helps!

    • @Beer_Dad1975
      @Beer_Dad1975 Před 2 lety +1

      @@markvieyra9950 I'd stick with the hobby first attitude - sure if you see something you think might go up in value that you can get at a great price now then it's worth it, and you get the one of freaky things like in this video that are outliers - but statistically there are far, far better investments to put your money into. Even in this video Ryan says he should have bought a house a few years ago because of property values. I've been a home owner for a long time, but just in the last 6 years since I bought my current house, it has nearly doubled in value, and thats many hundreds of thousands of dollars.

    This is why I bought a Barb from Stranger Things minifigure shortly after comic-con. It wasn’t much at the time and it was also signed by the designer of the set. Now the non signed versions go for at least double what I paid. So mine is probably worth a bit more than those. I knew that if I wanted that figure, that time would be the best time to get it.

Also the light up mace Windu light color being blue is just such a pitiful disappointment. So much for the beautiful vibrant amethyst color we all know and love being translated to lego boy did they blow it. Hey Ryan, I don’t know if you’ll see this comment. But you know a lot about lego Star wars so I have a question. Recently I I ordered a lego 2008 phase 1 clone trooper off of bricklink. When it arrived I took the helmet off, and for some reason the color of the head was lighter then it was supposed to be, almost clear looking. I wanted to know if this is a factory error or something. It looks knockoff but I shined a flashlight on the stud of the head and it had the lego logo. Is this something you know about or have?

    Wow - talk about something that would definitely be worth a small fraction of what you paid once opened. Rare 2x4 black brick.

    Askmandr: I want to get a lego set for Christmas. My budget is about $400. What set do you think I should get or do you think i should save up to get a bigger set like the ucs atat or the titanic?

    • @SynphulHero
      @SynphulHero Před 2 lety

      With a $400 budget you could get the non-UCS AT-AT, (if you’re able to hold onto the money until January 1st, 2021) the Hoth AT-ST, snowtrooper battle pack and a few defense of hoth accessory packs for around ~$250 not including sales tax. That would leave nearly $150 for anything else you want.
