    Despite being a widely distributed and popular breed today, the American Bulldog was on the verge of becoming extinct towards the mid 1900s.The American Bulldog is a breed that is experiencing a tremendous resurgence. The breed redesigned and rebranded by John D. Johnson and Alan Scott. The original bulldog was unlike the English bulldog known today. The breed originated as a cattle drover and “catch dog” used to catch and hold cows or other livestock until they could be corralled. This bulldog also was used as a property guardian.

    The American Bulldog is an athlete. For puppies, owners will need to practice non-impact exercises to decrease possible bone and joint damage. As adults, the American Bulldog will need a range of activities from jogs, hikes, tug-a-war games, to training exercises. The breed does not do well being left alone in a back yard. As this may lead to a variety of behavior problems related to pent-up energy. This breed requires frequent exercise and constant stimulation. Developing his athletic abilities will help this breed stay fit and happy.

    American bulldogs are some mighty fine dogs. Much respect to working/purpose bulldogs such as American bulldogs and American pit bulls. Not only their power, drive, and grit, but their well-rounded disposition and overall concept. With dogs such as these, you have a dog that can work hard as a partner/purpose animal and then go home and love just as hard as a family companion. As one well-known author, historian, and bulldog fancier, Diane Jessup, writes in one of her books:
    "A breed that, until the late 1980s, was virtually unheard of, this breed was made from existing lines of large Pit bulldogs during the eighties to attract the novice Pit bulldog owner who thought "bigger is better." Pit bulldogs which survived and developed along unique lines in secluded Southern states. Some lines of American bulldog are Pit Bulls crossed with any of a half dozen large Mastiff-type breeds."
    Very sturdy, and well-rounded dogs. Not to step on anyone's toes, but I would fancy the Scott type American bulldog over the Johnson. The Scott type, at least to me, embodies the true spirit and ability of working/purpose bulldogs a bit more than the Johnson and have greater agility and higher levels of drive. They are closer to pit bulldogs in their build and work ethic and really do show that bigger is not necessarily better.

      It is kind of a split there, buddy. Generally speaking, the Johnson type, with its larger frame and muscle mass, is seen to be the more powerful dog while the Scott type is faster and more agile. Both types have their unique traits that lend themselves to certain qualities in their favor; however, in my personal opinion, the edge would go to the Scott type. While the Johnson type may be larger and have more power to them, the Scott type have higher drive, more speed, agility, and more wind to them to keep going more vigorously for longer. The Scott type seems to be the more functional.

      I love the bulldog but I hate the Johnson's they look like the 1850 pug cross! the Scotts dogs are bread for looks not traits and characteristics so in time the traits and characteristics evolved into another breed title along with the outcrosses that took place you no longer have a true bulldog. And therefore have the name they deserve American bulldog? Bulldog literally means fighting dog. Bull baiting come in later mainly as sport. I'm a breeder been breeding for many of years and along with breeding I research primary source documents regrading these dogs. I don't get my info out of dog books I read history and have many documents and artworks regrading these beautiful animals I have a painting of Hernando De soto with a bunch of dogs many look like hounds with big square heads but with a mastiff body. Head well suited to the body not oversized. Snouts longer then what you see today and come in all colors except all black. You have many dogs that have the same bloodline alaunt type but some went into different direction like Pakistani bully kutta can name many more but I'm sure you get the picture. You have alaunt mastiff type (canis alani), beisser type bulldog, and moniker type bulldog. Bulldogs was used to describe all fighting dogs. Bandogs are dogs chained up all day and released only by owner to roam at night to protect the property. So many German Sheppards today would be considered Bandogs. So any dog could have been a Bandog and bulldog realistically it was traits and characteristics that made them what they are. Once you know what you want you can get a dog whose traits and characteristics and needs that suit there owners (you). Hope this info helps those that needed the information.

      Danny Grapes you clearly do not know anything about the breed. The Scott was not breed for looks it was breed for athleticism. Both Scott and Johnson are Bullmastiff, old English and boxer . The Scott has more boxer line in them. The Johnson has more Mastiff and old English,, HOWEVER Johnson's are not a cookie cutter breed so some come out looking old English. Some come out looking boxer. Some Mastiff and other look like and American Johnson.

    I have 2 of these dogs and both were marked as pit/ bulldog mixes. Not sure if they are or not, because the breeds are so closely related. My dogs are in the 90- 100lbs range. Something I have come to notice is that there are a lot of these dogs that have bad confirmation and the snout is way to short. just like has happened with some of the Bullies and I wonder if E. Bulldog was added to some lines. I'd rather have a cross if it means better confirmation Ect... My dogs are well bred dogs Great temperament.

    My neighbour has one. He (dog, not neighbour) looks like a fucking monster, something straight out of Lovecraft's stories, with his bloody eyes, giant jaws and uneven teeth. People usually run to the other side of the street when we walk our dogs together, mine is amstaff mix. And this bulldog is the friendliest, most good-natured dog ive ever seen. He is not very good with other boys, but other than that he lets kids crawl onto him, he lets girl dogs play with him roughly, even waggles his tail at stranger adults. My dog is smaller so sometimes people come up to us and ask to pet our dogs, they usually go for mine first... big mistake. They dont know whos the cuddly one lol.

    American bulldogs are some swell dogs. However, some folks sometimes are mistaken about their history. This video did a mighty fine job of discussing the American bulldog, but some folks claim that the American bulldog is the original bulldog used for different manner of work and purpose such as stock work and bull baiting. However, that is not the case. While they are a fine bulldog breed, especially the Scott type which is said to have more American Pit Bull blood in them, the American bulldog is a more recent breed created after the times of bull and bear baiting, yet have kept some of the same essence and functionality as the original bulldog, which is said to be the American Pit Bull or Pit bulldog. As a very prominent and well-respected voice Richard F. Stratton says in "Bulldog EDITION":
    "There have been many people who pondered the idea of the modern American Pit bulldog being a direct descendent and the best representative of the old time bulldog. Long before the now recognized breed American bulldog came about, one authority wanted to call our breed the American Pit bulldog. Now, of course, there was already a rift among the fanciers, as some wanted the “pit” part out of our breed name, even with the Bull terrier name. I should mention here that a very well known American bulldog fancier once confided privately to me that we both knew which was the original bulldog. And you can be sure that he didn’t mean the American bulldog."

      CyborgNinjaRaidenO7 That's mighty strange. From my knowledge, Johnson American bulldogs came before Scott American bulldogs. Actually, if I am remembering correctly, Alan Scott separated himself from Johnson and made his own line because he did not like the direction the Johnson American bulldogs were going.

      american bulldogs are not made from pitts. they are considered the closest thing to the original olde englishe bulldogge. which is thought to be extinct but there are recreations of it. American bulldogs were the original pitbull....confused with the terrier version so they changed the name to just American bulldog. they are separate breeds. but the bully breeds thru years of breeding come from the original olde English bulldogs. (all part of the mastiff family).

    I've been breeding American Bulldogs for 20 years, they shed a lot! Not fair to moderate. The dogs in the video are all very bully and short, closer to 21", I don't think I have ever seen one that is 28" at the withers, my tallest dog was about 25", he weighed 110 pounds. The american bulldogs that are used for working are not this type, these dogs have too much muscle mass and gas out quickly, the hybrid and standard type have more stamina and can usually breathe better. We breed taller less bully dogs than the ones in the video and we breed them for pets. We focus on producing puppies that are healthy, we health test the parents, hips, and the common genetic diseases, ichthyosis, hyperuricosuria and neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis plus 156 other genetic disease markers for dogs but not specific to the american bulldog. It is absolutely crucial that the puppies be properly socialized by the breeder and that the new puppy's family continues the socialization and training until the pup is about 18 months old. Do not buy a puppy from a breeder that doesn't health test or socialize and train. Our puppies are potty trained, crate trained and chew toy conditioned when they leave at 60 days. Treating your dog like shit doesn't make you more of a man, it makes you an insecure weakling who feels the need to dominate another animal.

    I haven't finished the video yet but can someone care to explain the reason as to why their is a difference in face shape, for example with Johnson and Scott

    • @M3bully
      @M3bully Před 8 lety

      Personal preference of the people who bred the different lines.

    • @SlottiexBob
      @SlottiexBob Před 7 lety

      the Scott was bred as a working dog more so then the Johnson, so the Scott muzzle is longer for holding quarry wither it be cattle or game. the Johnson was bred more for show.

      @salahudeensalaam9440 Před 7 lety +1

      jd johnson type are your shorter muzzle dog more English Bulldog in appearance. Standard or Scott type has a longer muzzle square type head like a brick. Then You have a in between type johnson style and Scott types dogs crossed which this is call hybrid types muzzle range from in between both styles of dog's. Hopefully I explained things well.

    • @tshred666
      @tshred666 Před 8 lety

      Choke chains are fine with big dogs. Just don't use them on smaller breeds like pugs or chihuahuas because they can cause serious injuries, especially with pugs where too much tension on the neck can cause the eyes to pop out of their socket.

      No not if u train them right. I have one. He's great with myself (a teen) and my younger brothers and sisters. They are very loyal. They pull very hard because they are pulling dogs but I grew up taking him out so I can handle him. He is the best and very protective to his owners. Like all dogs he has to sniff strangers before they touch then they are ok and can pet him.
