Canoe Sailing on the Orwell Estuary. Fishy Noodle Pocket Stove Lunch. Solway Dory Sailing Rig.

- In this video, I am back on the water in my homemade cedar strip canoe. As a last chance paddle before the big Scotland trip, I head down to Suffolk, to the river Orwell estuary. Leaving Pin Mill, I paddle down stream using my sail and the outgoing tide to push me towards the ports of Felixstowe and Harwich.
After a lunch stop at Shotley, I head back upstream, passing huge container ships and luxury sailing yachts, tacking across the estuary and using my paddle for extra power to make headway into the wind.
The tidal estuary of the River Orwell is a beautiful area full of birdlife and great fun under sail or for paddling. There is good access from Pin Mill, where there is a car park and a good pub for that refreshing pint afterwards.

Simon your an absolute gent mate. Thanks so much boss! Epic video as always man I really love your style mate and the filming is always spot on 👌👊
As soon as he pointed the camera at that old wreck I knew you'd get a shout out - I remember it well!
A shout out from Simon himself!! Praise indeed dude!!
2blokes in the same neck the woods it was only a matter of TIME ( collaboration incoming👍)
Pleasure mate!! We should get an East Anglian collaboration mashup camp sorted soon 👍👍
Come on lads, I hope you’ve got this in the diary this year 🤞🏻🤞🏻
This looked like fun. That sail is a game-changer!
I love that you don't act like 'Billy-Big-Bollocks' , but play safely and acknowledge that you do so.
Top drawer, once again.
Safety first, bollocks second 😁
The first minute alternate title: English gentleman takes his canoe for a walk-about 🛶
Looks like that new trolley is working splendidly!
Hahaha - I like that Kimberly! The trolley works so well, I don’t know why I didn’t make one years ago! 🛶🤣
My neighborhood could use a trolley like that for her canoe. Do you have a video on making one? I'm beginning to think that I must have missed a bunch from You! Safe journeys to all And please stay healthy too!
Thank you for supporting this special cause by the way as I have watched friends disappear slowly. I hope they find a cure AND a preventative SOON!
Lovely trip!
@@maryblaylock6545 Yes, he posted one about 1 month ago. Here ... /watch?v=Ysg8BcknfSM
Pinmill is where Arthur Ransomes book "We didn't mean to go to sea" starts. It was always a favourite of mine when I was a kid its nice to see what it looks like.
Well now there is a book that I have not heard of. I will look it up on Google. Thank you!
Now an industrial estate named after him lol
Arthur Ransome’s own boat (named ‘Goblin’ in the book) was Nancy Blackett. She has been restored and now regularly sails the Orwell and beyond. Look up Nancy Blackett Trust. Come sailing with us?
More great content. Thanks so much for sharing your adventure today. It was excellent that you kept naming landmarks and locations, which enabled me to follow along on google maps: Pin Mill, Shotley Sailing Club, Felixstowe Port, etc. Thanks again!
Yet another masterpiece of filming and lovely music. Can’t wait to see the hat off 😲
Comes off in some of the older ones 🤣
Who are the 21 crazy people that DIDN’T like this video 😳. Simon is awesome. Entertaining & likable.
Best wishes and safe travels in Scotland. 🙏🏼⛺️😎
Thanks Roland! 👍👍
Really enjoyed this one, Simon, though I do enjoy all your videos. I knew Pin Mill more than sixty years ago when I was at school just up river at Woolverstone Hall - it was a bit different then! Over the years I've enjoyed cycling, hill walking, camping, dinghy and offshore sailing, and paddled few canoes, but I've never sailed a canoe. These days I'm in a wheelchair, but I've taken up cooking and I'm still learning from your posts. Keep up the good work!
Oh my smile was ear to ear to see you just proudly walking down the street pulling your canoe as if it were floating on air!!! Hahaaa! That was great!
Thanks for the ride !
Oh my Lord, whenever you launch or beach your canoe it brings back strong memories of a stripper canoe that I built in the 1980’s. The sound of Gravel scraping along the bottom really sends shivers up the spine. All of the little scratches that can eventually compromise the skin of fiberglass .
Those things need tender, loving care when on dry land. I couldn’t take the stress anymore and sold mine to someone else who could carry on with the TLC that it requires. Lovely trip and sail across the estuary, thanks.
Yes, it takes a bit of care and maintenance - just completed some re-fibreglassing repairs, but I built it to use it - I’ll deal with scratches and holes as they appear 👍🛶
Swans again Simon without Maggie to protect you! You are living on the edge my friend 🤣🤣🤣. Can't wait for the Scottish trip, really looking forward to it. All the best Gus 👍
Beautiful boat and rig. Thanks for sharing!
I can't wait for your trip on the Caledonian Canal. It's so beautiful , that part of Scotland.
Yeah me too Cheryl, thank you 👍
Not long now! 😀😀😀
@@simonablokeinthewoods😃 You do realise I'm living vicariously through your adventures. It's saved me sooo much money! Kidding! I find inspiration and ideas and so much knowledge from your vlogs. They aren't overly blokey like some blogs. Just great videos, and loads of info.
@@simonablokeinthewoods Wish Olympics had a canoe contest. All I use is square tarp on 8 ft. f.glass pole. Bacteria linked to altsheimer disease, according to ad. Maybe they’ll find antibiotic appropriately.

Just found this channel. Mixing old videos with new ones. Love the clever methods and calmness of your work.
Thank you!
That canoe and trolley is something you can be proud. Very well done.
Great video pal,me and our lass a sharing a couple of bottles of red while watching your vlogs this Evening.
Simon I feel like you would be right at home here in New England. Hope you get to visit someday. Thanks for the sweet content.
Simon, you would like the area surrounding Balboa Island at Newport Beach, California, lots of challenges to navigate and beautiful views, esp. close to sunset. Put it on your bucket list!
Hi fellow watcher. I'm in Mission Viejo.
Great stuff - Enjoy your Great Glen adventure
A man of many talents, that's a beautiful canoe you've built Simon
You've got the Polynesian sail. All you need now is the outrigger, and you can colonise the Pacific😁
no thanks lol, been done-twice
Hahaha, I think I might be up against some fierce resistance!
@@simonablokeinthewoods it is a cracking bit of kit though. Do they make an outrigger for it?
cuppa joe, comfortable chair, a Simon video and the day is better already!!
Hey! Norwegian "Makrell i tomat"! Awesome stuff man!
We take of my 84 year old sister in law. We take her camping with us and she loves it.
That’s a Beautiful Canoe.
That was fun! Sail is really working and the cart wheels too :D
Glad to see you back
Another great video., awesome job.
I grew up in Felixstowe. Worked at the port for a few years after leaving school. Great to see you enjoying a day out on the Orwell.
Another great video Simon.
Lovely video Simon, I’ve paddled the Shotley to Orwell bridge route a couple of times in a sea kayak, with a stop at the pub at Pinmill on the way. The canoe sailing rig looks like it’s working well. I reached 5.5 knots downwind on Loch Oich when I did the Glen a couple of years ago. I also paddled it with the guy that wrote the guide book. So if you have any questions about the route I might be able to help. You now doubt hane done your homework, but 3 things that could be handy. No open fires allowed at the sites on the canal itself, get ready for the 70lm portage at Fort Augustus, and be open to doing the trip starting at Imverness if the wind is wrong. Have a great trip, I’m super envious!
Good one Simon ~ great little canoe sailing rig and surprisingly fast.
👋 Thank you Simon..that was smooth sailing ⛵ 🧡💛💚💜 🤠 👍
Great Job "Simon, a bloke on the Orwell Estuary." Nice easy winds, for the most part. Glad you missed inclement weather. Looking forward to seeing your next submissions concerning the Scotland Adventure fighting Alzheimer's Disease. Hope to see you without your hat :) Believe me, I'll do my part to reach that goal. Smooth Sailing in the future!!
Thanks JG for the support mate 👍
Thank you hugely! 👍
Thanks for a breath of fresh air!
Nice mention for Craig there. He's a top lad, i always enjoy his videos and like yours, they've gone on my regulars list. I'm loving the sail idea. what a great way to get around. you can really see why our ancestors used the waters as roads back in the day. I was trying to work out how the rudder at the mid section of the canoe works, (I'm not that hot on these things).
Look at all those containers full of Amazon and e-Bay goods most likely. Those ships are monsters aren't they. I spent some years in Southampton and Bristol so I've seen a fair few monsters ships. Good interesting stuff Simon, thanks for making and posting.
Simon: Thanks for another great video! But you don't need to apologize for the color of your jacket. I'm a beginner bushcrafter (learning from you) but a seasoned sailor. And although a gamut of olive greens and browns are much favored in clothing for bushcraft activities for the purpose of blending in with the environment, bright yellow and red are the preferred colours for open water sailing. Contrary to bushcraft, you want to be as noticeable as possible when you are sailing in open waters. There is a reason why that huge buoy (called "butt"?!?) you past sail on your starboard side at 3:12 is red and most open water life jackets are orange. Horses for courses.
Absolutely, I wear a bright jacket in the mountains for the same reason -safety first 👍
Simon, I love the canoe’s chariot!♥️ It works so great. Thanks for the video and getting to see you sail around in the estuary.🌊⛵️
Hello, I just watched my first video of yours. If I were you I would take Richard with me everytime! Lol He not only didn't forget to bring his part of the food, but he cooks also! lol I enjoyed the video very much.
Just brilliant!!

As a convert to paddle-sailing myself, I must admit it is a fantastically exciting and versitle way to cover a lot of distance and preserve energy when the conditions are favorable. Nice work brother!
I would get absolutely beaned in the head when that sail swings around 🤣
Can't park your yacht on the beach..! love it.
Nice work Simon, looks like a right bit of fun.

Hi Simon, I was the Operations Superintendent for Ferry ways out of Ipswich between 1999 and 2003. That's some great countryside.

Canned fish what a delish' dish!! I love them too.
Good luck in Scotland, just got back from that trip, an amazing route. After seeing some guys canoe sailing and watching your video, just ordered a rig to give it a try. 👍🏻
Nice to see your confidence growing. Using the cleat for the sheet makes a big difference in consistant winds. Another great sailing video.
Great Video mate....💪
Keep em coming Simon 👍👍👍👍👍👍
Very cool

Nice video looks good.... Looks like you will need a mini trolley and mini canoe for towing all your gear for your big trip. 👍👍
I lived in Martlesham Heath when I was stationed at RAF Bentwaters 30 years ago. Thanks for the memories! I used to kayak there and the river Deben.
