- Most of us see clouds every day, but only very occasionally will you be lucky enough to spot one of these 7 particularly rare types - some of which can only be seen in very specific circumstances or locations.
Noctilucent clouds
One of the rarest and most beautiful of all cloud types. They are found at very high altitudes - up to around 250,000 feet Visible on clear, summers nights between 45 °N and 80°N latitude ,they appear illuminated by a blue or occasionally red or green light. We still do not know much about how they are formed, but they are thought to be made up of ice crystals.
Kelvin-Helmholtz clouds
They can sometimes be seen as far as 60 miles downwind of the mountains that formed them. An extremely rare phenomenon, where clouds form as a billowing wave pattern Occurs when there is a strong vertical shear between two air streams. This causes some winds to blow faster at the upper level, than at the lower level.
Mammatus clouds
Bulge or pouch shaped, they’re usually seen emerging from the anvil at the top of cumulonimbus clouds. Formed by turbulence, they are one of the few clouds that come from sinking, rather than rising air.
Lenticular clouds
Usually formed behind hills or mountains, where the air is stable and winds are blowing from a similar direction. These tall geographic features interrupt the wind, the airflow undulates and condenses into these disc shaped clouds.
Funnel clouds
Cone shaped clouds which extend from the cloud base, but never actually touch the ground. Formed in the same way as a tornado around a small area of intensely low pressure. If a funnel cloud reaches the land it becomes a fully fledged tornado and if the funnel cloud reaches the surface of a body of water, it becomes a waterspout.
Fallstreak Hole clouds
Also known as a hole punch cloud - they form when part of the cloud layer turns to ice crystals which are large enough to fall. Water droplets in the cloud, cooled below 0°C but not yet frozen, will freeze if they find a particle to freeze on to or are cooled to below -40°C. Aircraft can cause this to happen by making the air expand & cool as it passes through the cloud
Arcus cloud
Formed when warm air within a storm cloud is pushed up from the ground by the cold air exiting downwards. Unattached to the storm cloud they are known as roll clouds, but when attached they are called shelf clouds.

Most of these aren’t actually rare if you watch the sky often and know what to look for. They’re just rarely as stunning as the examples shown.
EXACTLY. x
I remember when I was younger one day, I was getting out of school, waiting for the school bus to arrive. Then I saw a giant ass shelf cloud. I had a horrible phobia of storms at the time so I was dying inside. I thought it was somehow a giant tsunami that made its way there, because the back clouds had a blue-ish tone to them and were dark, and the front clouds were light grey. It haunted me for a long time.
I've seen and pictured 2 of these clouds.
I seen Kelvin-Helmholtz clouds and actually was mesmerised how they looked like dolphins almost, they were so wavey. I seen them 2 ot 3 months ago here in Ireland and just today I see Mammatus clouds as I was walking to the shop. Mother nature is insane
Aww i have seen 6-7 of this clouds shown in the video but i have never seen mamatus the last cloud cause in my area no CI are formed
So many clouds, so many to be seen. That's on earth.

The third cloud shown are extremely common, at least where I live. I even saw one today in a really small wind storm
I've never seen the zigzag type clouds... really interesting... the last one looks like a massive wave of clouds
There was once a funnel cloud forming above my house. My parents didn’t seem too concerned though.
Beautiful, interesting, illustrative and educational. Thank you very much.

I saw this for the first time in october 2020! It's so cool!
I keep watching for mammatus clouds. During the summer I've seen on many occasions where cumulus come together then form cumulonimbus which then goes to cumulonimbus incus but no mammatus. Patiently waiting to see that cloud formation I have seen all my other favorites.
I have seen 5 of the 7 shown. But then, I'm a cloud watcher, so probably not so unusual. I make sure to always have a camera with me.
How did you know when they formed
Wow Still Cool Today 👍s
I'm surprised undulatus asperatus didn't make the cut. For me, they tie with mammatus for favorite cloud type.
I saw 2 of these last week in little rock Arkansas the kevin-helmholtz and the arcus cloud on the same day
What about asperatus clouds?
i saw a giant cloud that was shaped like a dark ufo. O_o
it was weird cuz where i live we don't get many rare clouds like that...
did it form over a mountain peak or near a mountain peak? Do you live near any mountains?
Robert Lemons I do, never seen anything like described above
Lenticular cloud.
Formed when warm, moist air goes over a mountain, causing disc shaped clouds. When they detach from a mountain top, they become more UFO shaped.
prob a cell
When I saw a mammatus cloud as a kid I thought “popcorn”
Kelvin clouds really said 🌊 🌊 🌊
I saw the very low cloud Arcus and the hail was so loud
If I get to start my life all over again, I would really like to realize my dream as a meteorologist..........
I've seen lenticular clouds and kelvin-Helmholtz clouds before. I think I may have seen mammatus clouds before, but it was really faint so I don't know if it was or wasn't.
we had a supercell thunderstorm in belgrade this july, so the last type of the cloud explains perfectly how it looked like
the mamatus clouds terrify me alot.
i think i have cloud phobia now.

Don't be such a prune

Humans draw clouds while clouds draw the ocean while the ocean make clouds and the cycle repeats.
Here in NZ we commonly get lenticular clouds that look like UFOs due to high winds around the topography of the landscape. These are natural phenomena. There are some people on this thread who think these types of clouds are man-made. It makes me laugh.
who else thinks arcus clouds are terrifying
Yep mushroom clouds are rarest one.
I've only seen it once
What is the background music?
Im sure ive seen lenticulars above 16,500ft. Surely they exist over Himalayan and other high peaks!?? Not to mention when formed over a Cb, which could mean easily 8-10,000m high. Love th3 videos just curious for an explanation
I remember when I was kid I saw giant reddish cloud, the sky was red and scary 😟
0:31 i see almost everyday this cloud

At one time my siblings saw this amazing clouds which is a Mammatus one, Its really beautiful, we also take a pic of it🗿💅✨
And if a funnel cloud somehow came in contact with fire, you'd have a fire whirl.
How many of of you now realize you seen funnel clouds and thought it was a tornado but it never touches the ground
I’m looking for the Undilatis Asperitis clouds..

Have you ever seen any of these rare clouds? Let us know in the comments.
Met Office - Learn About Weather sadly you don't get comments
I've seen the Kelvin-Helmholtz clouds--recently. Very nice under sunlight. I wish I could see the Noctilucent clouds. Hell, I'd settle for any mesospheric clouds.

Think you need to speed up the video more, I could only see one or 2 words before it flashed to the next topic. If the goal was to miss it completely of course.
