  • In which I attempt to make a ceramic something from faceting swarf. It doesn't really work, but you'll still learn something.

You have reached the hold my beer in creativity stage. This could be on The Red Green show.

Oh this was cool! I'm glad you continued with this little project. I'm one of the paranoid folks who constantly cleans out my swarf, but I'm also interested in learning what else it can be used for 👍

This was entertaining. Could you use it for paper mache projects?

You would have to use much higher heats with those kind of minerals ...

That was fun Patrick, thanks. Now ask her about using it for textured gesso. Whole new video.😁

Sarah's primary medium is gouache and watercolor, so maybe I should send some her way. I wonder how I would declare swarf on a customs form?

I wonder what your swarf looks like under the microscope, can you see all the little bits of stone?

I'll try and remember to bring some your way sometime.

Try using it as an enamel on metal (copper). You should be able to fire it with a propane or large butane torch.

probably the only option to create a mineral from cutting dust would be to use something like an Electric arc furnace and the entire furnace chamber to pump in a large amount of gas like argon and then it would be possible to create a mineral

Not sure if already mentioned, but wonder what would happen if you took the swarf up to glass melting temps? Some of the material might fuse, creating an interesting effect. Might also just pop as the moisture bakes out of it and sit in the fire looking at you funny.

Great video! Neat experiments. I always wondered if there was something i could do with the trub from my rock tumbler, maybe I'll have to give it a try

Try melting the gem powder using an arc welder and carbon electrodes . Be interesting to see if they would form into a crystal of sorts.

pit firing is not going to get hot enough to really let most glazes like melt

This was actually a really cool experiment. No explosions, tho. Next time you can try to make paint from the 'clay'?

Why are you using aluminum foil? Aluminum melts at a relatively low temperature, about 660C. Good kilns for ceramics get much hotter than that, so if your aluminum foil has not melted then you didn't duplicate a kiln.
Your scarf may be a decent ceramic if properly heated, but you didn't get nearly hot enough.
Material in gemstones are mostly irrelevant to plants, unless they contain trace amounts of the metals needed by plants (Ca, Mg, Fe, Mn), so the scarf isn't going to work as a fertilizer either. You've just got a tiny amount so adding it to your soil is probably going to be irrelevant.

The Al foil melted on the second go round, that's why I had to pick them out of the embers. Thanks for the info!

  • @stefflus08
    @stefflus08 Před 10 měsíci

Nope nope. Not nearly hot enough. That aluminium foil shouldn't have made it at all. You need to make at least a small kiln that creates a bit of draft. The pottery itself needs to be full red or into the orange as a minimum.
