  • Imagine living on stilts. Just pylons in the water with old washed out boards haphazardly semi-nailed down. A whopping 23 steps from edge to edge. No land. Completely off grid. With the sole purpose of trying to relax for a week. Could you do it?
OK, granted we had a king sized bed and the owner of the place was a chef. But still, doing NOTHING? For all that time? It was a real challenge! (Honestly)

I’m Rick Higgins and I'm on a mission to experience all that life has to offer. Both the normal and the weird.
Every week I bring you tales of my (mis?) adventures as I travel nonstop around the globe. Experiencing cultures, places, and of course, the all important food and beverage. Mind you, this isn't your normal travel channel. No resort level tourist tips here, just a real look at what life outside of one's personal borders could be
Oh and PS … please support the channel! 😇 Lots of behind the scenes stuff, horrendous flubs and bloopers, and a bit of what’s ahead lies just behind the links below. All for less than you just spent at that drive-thru. (Just sayin’).

I truly wish I had relaxation in me. This would have been the perfect place to just do nothing and enjoy it. Oh well, different strokes and all that. I'm just not a do nothing kind of guy I suppose. 😇

As beautiful as it looks, I'd feel trapped.

I would have thought so too ... and honestly I was a little apprehensive about not being able to leave the island when the boat was gone ... but then the hammock called me and I was OK. :-)

Me and the wife absolutely love your videos! Which did you enjoy more? Bocas or Puerto Viejo?

I love dogs, but where do they poop when they live on a building on stilts?

    • @rickhiggins
      @rickhiggins  Před 2 lety

I asked that very question! There is a small clearing on the island with a small building and a pier to get there. Not for guests but for the dogs ... and Sebastián. Periodically the dogs get "let out".

I have wondered about if I could handle an off the grid remote vacation. Not sure if I could. But I think It would be healthy.

Twas certainly different. If I were a relaxed kinda guy I would have just read, drank, and slept. But I was in a new place and that just triggers my "what's next what's next what's next" impulses. Of which my options were reading, drinking, and sleeping. :-)

Was it expensive to get there?

Actually, no. But we didn't exactly take first class. LOL! We took a small bus from Costa Rica to Bocas Panama. And there we took a water taxi (read: some dude with a boat) over to the island. The bus ride was around $25 per person and the boat ride was around $30 for both of us. It probably took us most of the day to get from point A to point B, but that's what travel days are all about.
Oh, and as far as the Costa Rica side, we flew into the capital and took a van down to Puerto Viejo ... a cramped 4 hour ride. Nothing down there is what you would call simple and easy, but it is fun. (Usually. LOL!)

How do you buy your own shack over the water, do they just build it and tell the government later on paying taxes

    • @rickhiggins

They actually own land on the islands, it's just not developed. Then they extend it on to large buildings over water, decks, walkways, etc. The land itself remains "native", although at least in this case there was a rudimentary building used by the owner.
