Making a profit from Illness | THE DIRTY WAR ON THE NHS | John Pilger Health System Documentary

  • Designed to give millions of people "freedom from fear", the NHS today is under threat of being sold off and converted to a free market model inspired by America's disastrous health insurance system, which results in the death every year of an estimated 45,000 people. President Trump said the NHS is "on the table" in any future trade deal with America. Filmed in Britain and the UnitedStates, this timely, compelling documentary touches us all and reveals what may be the last battle to preserve the most fundamental human right.

We as average humans are in the grip of a perfect storm. The food we eat is processed to ensure we become addicted to seed oil fats and sugar, even fresh veg are grown in depleted soil resulting in poor health and obesity. Big pharma is ready to step in with a plethora of expensive drugs to control our lifestyle illnesses. All in the name of money. Take your own health care seriously and do research into everything you eat and drink, exercise regularly, you don't need a gym. Do everything within your power to avoid falling into the hands of these parasites. God bless.

The UK is a ruin, not just the NHS. All those public sector jobs that are outsourced and contracted to private companies, and staff put onto lame contracts earning a measley wage is a disaster. This is in no way how to treat the working class.

Ye, but that's part of the problem: it's not only the WK who use the NHS. There are extremely privileged patients using the NHS.
Really, from day 1 ( 1947) it should have been limited to those under a certain wage .
Once you get millionaires using it then the socialist aspect has already been lost.

@@morejoy5188Sorry, but I strongly disagree. The NHS was rightly dedicated to providing good healthcare to ALL, not just one group of people. Had it been limited to “just the working class,” care offered would likely have been, at best, merely adequate and perhaps worse than that. There is nothing to be gained by limiting it, much to be lost.
(I am a retired NHS nurse. I probably should be deemed middle-class, not working class, but regardless I am a whole-hearted socialist and believe in a good quality health service for absolutely all.)

The family around me had all the "lifestyle" illnesses. And what they paid for medication was unbelievable. In addition, one who had a variety of strokes/heart attacks had to downsize as could no longer afford her home. This led to emotional health issues. In my last time travelling around California I saw Medicin San Frontier were there to provide health services!!! I thought, I am so glad that the NHS exists. But on returning to UK, I realised that I was still behaving as if in the US, and very health focused. But I needed to see a dentist!!! I do not qualify for NHS and private means paying ridiculous prices for a checkup. I am never called back for further checkup because I do not have major issues which means more money. I've been on thyroxine for 30+ years. It's standard medication for a common condition and millions of patients will depend on it for the rest of their lives. This drug had no patents. It cost pennies to produce, and there's no development money that pharmaceutical companies need to recover through sales. The drug would now cost over £80 a month. If there was no NHS, 10% of my income would be used on this one drug, and many patients will be on cocktails of medication with this being one of the cheapest. The price has been driven up by competing pharmaceutical companies trying to drive smaller producers out of business. Their costs did NOT increase. This is just extra profit that they didn't earn but are able to steal from the NHS.

You can blame corrupt politicians for that, we've allowed this to happen, people don't care about other people anymore they care about themselves. The clip of Churchill getting booed by ordinary folk was powerful, they looked out for each other and stood as a collective, today unfortunately we have allowed the shit houses in parliament to divide us and they love it. It's time for massive change in this country before it's too late, we still have a chance to change it, if we come together as a collective, am I hopeful? It remains to be seen.

Tony Blairs Labour was the party who happily continued Thatchers PFI. I work in the NHS on the front line and the difference now from only 20 years ago is devastating. One of our consultants was a patient on our ward and she told me how herself and other Dr's and management were sent to America to see how their healthcare system worked. She hated it. Our new hospital well it opened in 2012 anyhow it was built by Sodexo and the wards are built mainly with single rooms ready for the private sector. Huge rooms and huge corridors that could have even extra beds. Some of those 28 bedded wards have had to convert bathrooms and dayrooms into beds and bays and that still isn't enough. Patients with dementia moving wards in the middle of the night. Staffing at dangerously low levels. Management walking around with clipboards causing havoc. I left the acute trust after 20 years because every shift I was arguing with site managers trying to protect my patients and staff. Now in primary care its better for me but I see the whole damn picture and it is heartbreaking how human beings are being treated. Don't get me started on procurement and the total waste of resources.

Plus, society’s attitudes have fundamentally changed. As opposed to revering the NHS, it’s now seen as a panacea for all ills - everyone seems to be sticking their hands in the cookie jar irrespective of wether the NHS can afford it. I am a Brit who has been living in the US for several years. One thing I remember about the UK that united the vast majority of British people of every political persuasion was a pride in the National Health Service and a willingness to defend it from attack and privatization. Here in the US, we have to deal with cut throat insurance companies that do not care about your health. They care about making a profit. It is not just patients who feel confused and ripped off by these companies, health care professionals have similar feelings. To turn the NHS into the American healthcare nightmare could not happen overnight, but it will happen eventually if the British people don't unite, organize, and protest on a sustained and massive scale. Privatization of elements of the NHS has been taken by stealth and ever so slowly by Tories and New Labour over the years so as not to alarm the public. Simon Stevens, former CEO of United Healthcare, my price gouging private health insurance company here in the US, was made head of NHS England by the Tories but was an NHS policy advisor for Tony Blair and New Labour before the Tories took over. Remember, even Trump said the NHS will not be off the table in negotiations for a US/UK trade deal.

It was only in 2008 that prescriptions were made Free of charge for all citizens in Scotland. Not forgetting being charged an illegal Poll and Council Tax for the right to live with my parents at their rented council house from 1990 at the age of 23 after Thatcher's Tory government replaced the fairer means tested Household Domestic rates with an illegal Poll tax which was replaced by the Council Tax, on the individual. Firstly kick out all private interference in healthcare (but keep their money) 2) no private corporation inside the UK can invest outside the UK & no corporation outside can take money fom the uk economy 3) tax them heavily 4) as a UK based corporation either they invest up to 30% of their excess profits in the uk with no expectation of profiteering or they & their company leave the UK in other words as a private corporation you should be expected to feed into the public sector services without expectation of profiteering but only to expect those public services to be there when you need them. Health & social care must come first & must be the highest funded service of any society period. If corporations do not like this then they are morally corrupt & should be immediately dissolved..

My beloved Husband was taken off the Ventilator he clearly needed. We were told that “the next 24 hours are critical” and that it was a medical decision to take him off the ventilator.
Appalling deathbed scene with a young doctor checking his pulse ever 5 minutes or so and two nurses standing in the doorway, watching. Our Children and Grandson stood by helplessly. I never thought that my Husband was dying.
To add to the trauma, we had not been able to see Alfie for weeks - he was in an Nursing Home as he had Parkinson’s Disease and Lewy Body Dementia. From being with him every day, I had not been allowed to see him due to the Covid restrictions.
I believe that the “medical decision” was because they deemed there to be no quality of life, but they were wrong. Rest Peacefully My Darling. 💔

Been working foir my local hospital 13 years, 5 of those on the wards as an HCA. We've recently brought back in house portering, housekeeping & catering after several private companies - the likes of ISS, Sodexo failed to provide an adequate service, think Hinchingbrooke on a smaller scale. We particularly struggle financially as part of our estate is a children's hospital that is PFI. Privatisation of public services does not work, should be reversed & all of it taken back into public ownership. Services should be run for the benefit of everybody not for private companies to make a profit out of...

The hospital I worked at the portering and domestic staff went out to tender and lost. the contractor did not submit for new equipment (basically it was not checked on). The tugs, vacs and buffers etc were 20 years old and shared. The 1st contractors sold out to an American firm due to losses. It cost the NHS big time. Happy to say it went back in house. I could add a lot more but it is over;20 years ago. I personally felt that tendering out services of any description should never have been allowed as common sense tells you they want a profit. Let me make this very clear. 13 years ago the British people voted for a Conservative government. A party that has never believed in the NHS. However, for 13 years the British people voted for them four times. When will the British people ever learn from their catastrophic mistakes. I would not be surprised if they vote for them again for the fifth time. The British people need to take a long good look in the mirror and ask themselves who are we? What are we? What have we done? What have we become? And where do we go from here? Because right now your country is just not investable right now. This will be for the long term. When are the British people going own up and say :’We are the mentally sick people of the world, we need help and we seen the errors of our ways. Our egos and emotions cloud our judgement. We British people should be ashamed of ourselves. The sad reality is British will never, ever own up to their mistakes. It’s always someone else’s fault. Shame!😔

John, I think people need advice on how to fight this. We need to (perhaps starting at a local level) get people engaged. Marches and protests only in London, are great for people who can afford to get there/live there, but for others local protests need to be led and organised. Writing to local MP’s just leads to being ignored or just sent a standard reply response. What do we have to do to make an impact? How do we identify and encourage true and decent leaders to come forward and support them? MSM will do us no favours that’s for sure. This government has been and still is, really cunning in misinformation and closing us down/depleting us in many ways.

In all fairness, we all need to take more responsibility for maintaining and improving our own health and make better choices for our children’s health. The NHS is SICK CARE not HEALTH CARE. In Australia we have this same national health care, and we have not yet reached this appalling state, but I feel we will as the costs soar, the people age and families are more unable to look after their elderly. Nutrition and some type of exercise or activity are the basis of a healthy life. Sure things will go wrong, but let’s spend more money on prevention.

Was told to go to A&E when they could not fit me in. Bounced from one service to another with severe pain and wound infection from 4th day. The majority of health problems and early deaths are related to non-communicable, or "lifestyle", diseases. Stress, poor sleep, lack of physical activity, poor nutrition, lack of sunlight and time outdoors, lack of connection and purpose, as well as exposure to environmental toxins, appear to be the greatest threats to our health. The bad news is, the medical establishment as a whole don't seem to study much/any of this. They seem to study clusters of symptoms = dieease = prescription of medication or surgery. The good news is, the majority of us have an incredible amount of power to influence our health and quality of life.

Stopping me having my family to visit!!! Giving me the wrong food to what I ordered, with holding water which I needed to rehydrate, causing severe constipation and bleeding!!! This is NHS of today, I tried warning the visitors there to take their ❤ Ones home!!! Still suffering PTSD through that experience 😢😢

If you want to keep your health for as long as possible. Give up sugar completely and fast. No smoking, no alcohol. Good luck.

Doesn't matter who you vote for the capitalist gets in. I'm so very depressed about my country. It's a hole I don't know how we climb out of. Apart from my husband there's no one to talk to. No one wants to know. "Stop talking about politics"... I'm 58 and I better stay well.
