  • Howard's mom dies in her sleep while on a vacation in Florida. Sheldon surprises everyone including us, especially Penny when he comforts Howard in a very unSheldon like human way.

@@frostypizzaman1793 that line always hits me hard. I lost my dad when I was 18, he was 53. He was my hero, my best friend and I had no friends to help me through it. Ten years has now passed. A couple of my old friends have lost a mother and a father since then. I reached out to them and now we’re all okay. The old adage is certainly true: ‘Time Does Heal.’ But you need to keep yourself occupied to truly let the pain go.

People always mention the words of comfort that Sheldon offers to Howard, but nobody ever mentions how quickly Sheldon turns around from perusing the comic books to look at his friend. And the look of concerned sadness on his face as he does so is noteworthy too, since Sheldon is usually so self-absorbed and indifferent to the world around him that it would have been no surprise had he just continued looking at the comics. But, as Sheldon himself says in the finale, he loves them all, in his way.

I know that feeling. It might sound weird since it's just about a cat, but I once had a cat for almost 19 years but as she got older, she started acting a little weird. She stopped using her litterbox and just pooped wherever she liked, so I constantly had to watch her and be ready to put something below her so the floor doesn't get dirty. It was kinda stressful always having to keep an eye on her and cleaning up. But now that she's not there anymore, I weirdly miss that. She was my favourite cat and I'm still sad we had to put her to sleep.

I understand a little 2 well. I lost my grandmother one or two summers back and GOD did that hurt like hell. I hated myself for when it happened I felt like a big coward because even tho I called the ambulance and all I forgot how 2 use CPR and panicked. So when the emts told me when she was gone (after god knows how many hours of denial I went thru I may add) I blamed myself. It didn't help that the day before she passed my dickwad brother said terrible things 2 her face. I totally considered beating him 2 a bloody pulp that day. I only didn't because she was hurting enough as it was and I didn't want 2 make it worse. So the next day when I was in tears and my brother told me tears wasn't gonna bring her back I almost lost it right there. Ever since to this day I think of how I failed my role model/best grandmother and hated myself 4 being a coward. But I choose 2 stay strong for her and my late grandad as well. I decided while I may hate myself I can still learn from my mistakes. I'm sorry 4 going on this but this video reminded me of that. Sorry 4 messing up the comments section here..

I like what Simon Helberg did for Howard in this scene, no crying, almost no emotion, just stone-faced shock and emptiness. When someone finds out that a person they loved is dead, for the first hour or so, they might not even be able to properly display their grief. You are in shock, confused and unable to process the loss and void in your life. It seems so unreal and only after some time does the full extent of despair actually hit. It's like some part of your mind instinctively expects the person to come back and only after a while does your subconscious realize that they are gone forever. This was conveyed very well for Howard's character.

When my mom passed away, I was away and didn't even get to see her during her last moments. My brother broke the news, I didn't cry, I kinda knew this was coming since she had been suffering from rapidly spreading liver cirrhosis for quite a while. I realised how fragile life is. I booked a flight, went there, saw my mother completely still. Went for her cremation, saw her body disappear into the electric pyre, that was the last time I saw her, collected her ashes and returned home, I felt empty, started smoking (I had quit) but even after all this, I didn't cry. And suddenly, after about 6 months, I broke down completely. I was at a friend's place and I remember going to the washroom and crying like a baby by holding the water tap to support my weight. Over the next two years I went into depression, became a diabetic. It took a long time to come out of it, to fill the void, my mother's sudden passing away had brought in my life. I slowly regained the positivity and a purpose in life. Started eating healthy food, took up Yoga, weight training, started playing Squash and Tennis. I did everything that I had an interest in. Now my sugar levels are absolutely fine, I am happy and positive. I had quit smoking, found a nice girl who makes me happy and having a great time in my life!

Probably because they still tried to force some jokes in there, like Penny's remark how she thought Sheldon would say 'let it go'. You don't need jokes in a scene that is meant to be deeply sad and tragic. Even in a sitcom, it's okay to have a few scenes where the group tackles something that is deeply distressing for them and they try to cope as best they can to get through it.
The forced humor greatly diminishes the effect of tragedy and feels completely out of place. It would have been okay for this episode to not be funny and instead focus on the loss of a close loved one and how to move past it, but that's something this show really struggled with. It never knew when to let go of the jokes for a bit and let another, more serious topic take the spotlight for a short while.
The second scene, in the apartment, when the group discusses the tragic event was done much better and more tastefully. That's how they should have done it all the way through.

When Sheldon said, "When I lost my own father, I didn't have any friends to help me through it. You do," I got emotional the first time I saw this because my own mother passed shortly before this episode, and my high school reunion was a week later. The outpouring was tremendous.
The toast at the end gets me as well because my dirt bag older brother caused Dad all kinds of grief in the weeks leading up to her passing, and then, after I made all the funeral arrangements, deliberately raided my father's liquor cabinet, poured glasses for everyone in the room (himself, Dad, my other brother, and my cousin), and toasts Mom without me in the room. My wife started to say, "I think you're forgetting someone," but she held back. The sad part is I will never get that moment back even if they all got together right now and redid that toast.

This scene hits me in the gut because I lost my mother some months ago. The initial hit of the loss of a loved one (related or not) can be overwhelming, but the loss of a parent is a huge blow and the gamut of feelings can be extreme. The presence of friends and family can soften the blow somewhat, but the emotions take time to get over. I'm tearing up right now on this comment.

It doesn’t matter whether you’re a man who lost his dad as a kid, a woman whose been into science her entire life, an actress who works as a waiter in a restaurant, a nerd, a single Indian guy who’s shy around women, a comic store guy or a mama’s boy.

It hits hard to know that that the actor playing Mrs. Wolowitz actually died in real life. It hits even harder to know that while TBBT is finished, Young Sheldon is still ongoing and with the way things are going on right now, dark times are headed for the Cooper Family. If this is already heartbreaking, which it is, I honestly don't know what's going to happen when we see George Sr. die and the family going into disarray.
The line Sheldon said hit hard. But it hits even harder after Young Sheldon's later seasons
