  • In an apparent idyll high in the Swiss Alps, a secluded village society prepares for the next wedding. Amina is to be the lucky one this time. The groom Elvino, however, soon turns his attention back to his former wife because Amina sleepwalks into the bed of a stranger who has just arrived. Count Rodolfo, son of the former lord of the manor and travelling incognito, cannot convince the villagers of his innocence nor that of Amina, until she sleepwalks again and the collective belief in the supernatural is put to the test.
    With its pastoral setting, its Utopian vision of a harmoniously ordered society and a happy ending reached by way of situations of great poignancy, La sonnambula is Bellini’s first mature masterpiece. Here he extends the expressive range of his lyricism with the most beautiful coloratura and lilting melodies; from Anima’s opening aria - which embraces ecstatic introspection, tender recitative-like musings and exuberant virtuosity - to her heart-breaking closing scene. Bellini creates a sense of the lead characters being part of a close-knit community by a constant musical interaction between the soloists and chorus. Teatro del Opera di Roma’s new production is conducted by Francesco Lanzillotta and is directed by Jean-Philippe Clarac & Olivier Deloeuil ‘LE LAB’, starring Lisette Oropesa as Amina and John Osborn as Elvino.

    Dear Lisette, you are a superstar and should not be in those horrible productions. Here in Mexico City, Bellas Artes, with much, much less money (and in Mexican pesos $1 = 6 euro cents), they do more dignified things and although not spectacular, at least with dramatic coherence.

    Muchas gracias OV y Teatro dell” Opera. di Roma..Tenía muchas ganas de escuchar esta ópera. Una de mis favoritas , de una música extraordinaria. No obstante, debo decir, que el lenguaje visual que se incorporó para contar la historia, no aportó nada y en ocasiones fue confuso. No hace falta utilizar este recurso para contemporizar, actualizar ambientar la narración, pues el arte es atemporal. Personalmente he disfrutado mucho este perfomance. El verso es bellísimo. El aria ah¡ Non credea mirarti…es tan, tan Bella, que hubiese querido que la Oropesa la repitiera una y otra vez…en fin. Gracias de nuevo. ❤❤❤❤❤❤

    Splendida muzica, exceptionali interpreti. O aiurala de punere in scena, care nu creste valoarea operei, ci o scade. Acesti teeribili regizori, ce se vor inovatori, sant in fond dusmanii artei. Sa-i ia dracu pe toti care "actualizeaza" trecutul si lumea magica a operei.

    Es gibt hier viele negative Kritiken für Lisette Oropesa's Amina. Ich habe viele "Amina's gesehen und gehört, aber lange schon keine so fantastische wie Lisette. Mir kamen die Tränen. Und der hohe Ton von John Osborn im pianissimo einfach grandios. Ist nicht mehr der Jüngste. Die Inszenierung allerdings ein katastrophaler Klamauk. Da möchte ich niemals singen müssen. Eine Gruberova hat sich vor solchen Inszenierungen verweigert. Recht hatte sie. Im Belcanto wird und soll es zuerst immer um die hohe Kunst des Singens gehen, nicht um modernes "pseudopsychologisches" Regietheater.

      Es gibt keine negativen Bewertungen für Lisettes Amina. Tatsächlich, wenn man sich alle Kritiken ihrer Aufführung ansieht, aus über einem Dutzend verschiedener Zeitschriften, sind sie alle perfekt. Ihre Amina wurde sehr gelobt, und das zu Recht! Sie ist die beste Interpretin dieser Zeit. Die einzigen negativen Menschen sind die "üblichen Verdächtigen", die immer auf CZcams auftauchen, nur um Sänger zu trollen. Wenn Sie etwas Großartiges bei ihrer Aufführung gespürt haben, dann haben Sie vollkommen recht, es so zu empfinden.

    It must be somewhat intimidating for any soprano to have to get through “ Ah non guinge ! “ with giant photos of Jenny Lind and Maria Callas in the role, looking over her shoulder ….

    J'en revais Lisette Oropesa et Roberto Tagliavini je n'ai pas été déçu tout les deux son fabuleux mais une fois de plus une production ridicule je me contenterai que du son et j'ai coupé l'écran.

    Sorry, this opera does not need updating. The latest Met production tried it and was loudly booed. This was worse. Too bad as the singing was very good.

    Me pregunto, ¿Qué tenía el director de escena en la cabeza? Una ópera tan hermosa que pocas veces reúne a un gran cast y destruirla de esta manera. Para disfrutarla al 100%, por minutos dejaba de mirar porque no podía entender lo que quería plasmar. De todas formas muchas gracias por compartir tan bello arte.

    Yo preferí solo escucharla, después de mirar un rato. A pesar de que soy fan de Lisette. La puesta en escena distrae y nada aporta a la obra. En las arias más importantes hay personas recogiendo y poniendo cosas en el escenario. El vestuario horrible.

    Very bad 'variations' in the repeat of Lisa's Cavatina. I realize it's her only solo opportunity in the opera - but stylistically disastrous.

    Ridiculous production to say the least! The worst ever seen. Why Jenny Lind and Maria Callas at the end? To remind us that there were better days for this opera? And that fake Swiss flag?? The worst production ever seen. Oropesa is not at her best, Osborne has a lot of vocal problems by now, Tagliavini is definitely the best. A Count to remember. He even sings “Vi ravviso” with some stylish portamento! Ravishing! Lanzillotta does a very good job with what he has, but he deserves a better production.

    Oh my my … the soprano managed to complete the opera! She must be so tired and her throat must be so sore after yelling and screaming the high notes like this for two hours. In the last aria the voice was completely gone and the high notes were so pushed, pressed ans squeezed. She deserves a good rest for the effort. So does the tenor.

      From her impeccable Italian song technique, you mean? Nothing pushed or squeezed there. Use your ears better. As for Osborn, I am not normally too fond of him outside of French opera, but here he actually finds himself at home. - And impeccably conducted by one of many great young star conductors in the bel canto repertoire, standing on the shoulders of the ground-breaking work of Zedda, Bonynge, Ferro.

      @@steffeng40 I saw her in the theater and, for me, she was absolutely perfect. I don't think that there has been a soprano singing this repertoire at this level for decades. The production was awful, of course and I can't imagine how difficult it is to try and sing this music with those tasteless costumes and sets. I feel so bad for singers that have to deal with these ridiculous directors.

    Dire regia è insultare l'opera nel suo pieno essere!!! Se, poi, ci sono cantanti inadeguati al ruolo che cantano, beh la colpa è, come sempre, delle pessime agenzie, dispiace per il direttore, abbastanza preciso e in stile, il resto è semplicemente spazzatura!!! 👎👎👎

    I can't watch this. Lisette is all wrong for Amina - she's too sophisticated naturally and she's trying too hard to project 'innocence.' The caricature costume is a jarring contrast. Also her variations in the repeat of 'Sovra il sen la man mi posa' are stylistically inept. Who's responsible here?

    Who are they lying to with this video?
    At the end, when everyone bows, the entire cast is completely booed. From singers, orchestra, regie, maestro, etc.
    Lisette Oropesa was booed loudest in her solo bow! I saw the live footage, and my friends also told me. I know what happend!
    I can't believe they actually cut out the audience's disapproval and put in a fake applause. I really can't believe it!
    Lisette canceled all further performances after 2 nights because she could no longer "sing". The ugliest and most broken voice I have ever heard! No bel canto only can't canto!
    Who are you lying to???!!!
    Well, the listeners aren't morons to not know what's going on!
    Shame on you!

    😂😂😂😂 a unacceptable flutter in the vibrato makes the voice passable only for Despina on a bad night, all round disappointing.
