Dreadlocks wrapping is the first thing that many dreadheads can not wait to do as soon as they are done with starting their dreads. However, just like anything related to the health and safety of your dreadlocks, there are few points you need to know about locks wrap.
When should I start wrapping my dreadlocks?
The best would be that you wait untill your dreads are fully matured before starting any sort of decoration or accessorizing, let them do their thing, the process is long and needs a lot of patience. And wrapping them will slow down the locking process.
But, you can still wrap your less-than-mature dreads as long as you do not keep them wrapped for a long time. I would suggest a day maximum,
Types of wrapping
there are actually no rules and you can wrap your dreads however you want, but there are two major types of dread wraps that you can play with and invent your own style:
*Criss-cross wraps: these open string wraps are the best for young dreadlocks, because they do not "choke" or squeeze the dread and allow it to breath, but if you leave the strings long enough on your young dreads, your hair will lock on them and it will be hard to take out the strings afterwards.
*Solid thread wraps: these are not recommended for young locks as they choke the dread and stop it from locking and may cause weak spots. But if you decide to wrap your young dreads do not leave them for too long as we said and also try to make your wraps loose, do not squeese the dread.

+Dreadlocks Journey ive started a single dread but only had it for like a month i cant wrap it?
Yes you can, but remember that it didn't mature yet, so if you leave threads on it for too long, your hair will lock on them and then you won't be able to take them off
+Dreadlocks Journey ohh i see now so u can wear them but not for months an months ? i got it
I wouldn't let them wrapped for more than few days actually
Thx!
You're welcome!
buen vídeo
Gracias :)
excelente explicacion me sirvio muxo✌
Gracias
why do we have to wait til they matured? My locs are frizzy and i was thinking this would be a great way to contain the frizz
because they will form on the threads and it will be too hard to remove them afterwards, you can wrap them for containing the frizz just don't let them wrapped for too long
I got straight hair so I wrap the ends then knot whatever is left over to keep it from coming out
How do you do the knotting?
Love #3
❤️
what if i wrapped one four month old dread and left it for a week or two would that affect the process of that dread or would it not matter
It depends on your hair, but generally one week or two is not bad. but watch the locking process, your hair might start locking on the strings and then it would be hard to unwrap
Thanks for the info
I do these all the time on braids bc I don’t have dreads🤩
Hahahaha! it still works great for braids
Really nice video, it helped a lot. What kind of thread did you use, tho?
Looks like embroidery thread to me
I like them all but the last one takes up to much unused yarn.
One of my mates put thread in my dreads and after a few days it came out - any ideas on preventing this?
It's good that it came out after few day, do you want it to stay forever?
I have twist n rip dredlocks at the moment, but I'd much rather have free form dredlocks. So, if i stop twisting them and leave them alone will they turn to free form dreds if i stop and don't do anything at all
if you stop now they would be half free form :) because you already did twist and rip.. names don't matter though just let them do their thing now, you will only have to do separation every now and then, as for how long it would take for them to fully mature, it depends on many things, like your hair texture, the shampoo you're using, their length, the climate where you live...
@@DreadlocksJourney ok thanks they're almost shoulder length and i live in ky if that tells u anything lol never thought all that would be important to having dredlocks lol but im using the Jamaican mango brand shampoo its for natural hair and im pretty satisfied with it but yea thank so much
What do you call those strings you used? Are they wax thread?
No, not wax threads, just normal ones
how long can you leave the decorations. through washing and what not. Mildew won't grow?
On young dreads you shouldn't leave them for more than one -two days, but for mature dreads you can leave them for longer, can't tell exactly because it depends on your hair, how greasy is it, where do you leave and how easily you start having build up in your dreads... only you can decide
Main questions is. How do you take them back out without breakinv the dread itself?
If you don't leave them on the dread for long then you won't have that issue. if you did then you will need a professional to remove them for you carefully and safely using a hook and maybe scissors
@@DreadlocksJourney Thanks for answering my question ☺
Are you using thread for making friendship bracelets?
What do you mean by makinf friendship bracelets? is it related to dreadlocks? or are you talking in general?
Where can one find/buy string pieces? In what kind of stores
Any yarn shop in your town? or Craft store..
or you can buy them online like on amazon
cvondrak Wal mart
How do I know when it’s fully matured?
They become rope-like, no frizz or crazy hair coming undone
¿que tipo de hilo se utiliza?
Not sure I understood, do you mean what kind of thread did I use??
Is this yarn or just regular string
I think just regular string, I just went to the shop and asked for strings of different colors, no idea what they gave me, because in all cases I never left them on my locs for too long so I didn’t care
What are you using? It looks Shiney? Doesn't look like yarn, doesn't look like regular string.. is it a satin kinda string??? Sorry if it's a silly question just curious cuz I want to get some for myself.
Im not an expert in types of strings 😅 I know very little about them, Plus it was years ago, I think just regular string, I just went to the shop and asked for strings of different colors, no idea what they gave me back then, because in all cases I never left them on my locs for too long so I didn’t care.. But I would suggest a type that would be easy to remove and not get locked with the loose hair
Does this threads have specific name ?
Nope not really, it doesn't matter what kind as long as you will not keep them on for long
que hilo es?
yarn
QUE HILO ES?? BUENA VIBRAS
I'm sorry, what's the question?
Dreadlocks Journey the question was what Kind of thread it is
cAn I use thread... I bought thread instead of yarn
Hi! Yeah sure you can why not?
Just curious, do you think thread is harmful? I figure if thread is sharpe enough to shape eyebrows won’t it also cut through a loc?
How can we remove the decorations safely ???
Remove them before they get stuck in your dreads, if they do, you can only try to remove them very slowly and carefully to avoid cutting some hair
Can I use cuticle scissors cause they are pointy and small
where can I get it from?
Where can you get what from? the threads?? any local crafts store
Dreadlocks Journey The only stuff you’re using in the video. yes, the threads. Oh thanks.
The locs you got are how old?
7 years
@@DreadlocksJourney thanks!
is it yarn
+MrCaddilacchris Yes, but this was just a demonstration, you don't have to use it
+Dreadlocks Journey does it have to be a certain type of yarn I don't want a bunch of fuzzies in my dreads
So is this yarn? Or what??
It was years ago I don't actually remember sorry, but does it matter? wool thread is the best if you could find it
@@DreadlocksJourney why you being smart? I was just asking but never no mind. I dyed my hair instead
How would you tell when your dreadlocks are mature?
When they tighten up and stop getting loose
@@DreadlocksJourney At that point, does that mean you no longer have to get them maintained?
First of all, you don't need to mentain your dreads at any time, only in few cases when you really have to, depending on your hair texture and how greasy it is and also the method you did to start your dreads.. other than that you just need to be patient and wait for your hair to do its thing. Some people maintain because they can't handle the messyness and fuzzy hair.. But yes when the locks mature there's no need to maintain them but some people still keep maintining the roots.
@@DreadlocksJourney My dreads are 9 months old now and I get maintenance every single month, otherwise they join very easily at the roots. I went for 2 months
without a maintenance (just to see how it'd go) and when they had to be separated, it was surprisingly painful.
My dreadlocks were created professionally as well.
separation doesn't count :P you can do it on a daily basis, even people who go freeform do it
I had a scissor accident recently. As a consequence my hair is just growing all over the plaice
I was fishing at the time
