@@adriansoul7223 Well, John tried to help get that annoying guitar strap reattached but Keith managed it by himself in the end. And he didn't even seem to skip a beat in his solo! Amazing! 🎸🤔🎸
Imagine a touring band with bukovac and Steve Jordan every night, stg this whole crossroads performance is a historical treasure but no one knows about it
I’d also like to add “Sweet Thing” on this show is AWESOME! They tear it up at the end! This has always been one of my favorite concerts with these two rippin it up!
The Mayer/Urban Crossroads is one of the best Crossroads CMT has had. Every single song they did was an absolute banger and the guitar work was incredible.
This is one my favorite performances I've ever seen. Keith Urban is one of the most underrated vocalists ever. And Mayer holds his own. But, you wait for Urban to sing. Excellent video and analysis.
If any Crossroads episode should have been released as a live album it’s this one. Every song was great, and this was a favorite. Thank you for talking us through it. I’m not trying to learn guitar but I watch all your videos anyway for the education and enthusiasm!
I've been enamored for years by this song. I don't normally listen to "country", but Keith Urban, like John Mayer, is an incredible songwriter. To be honest, this is the only song I know by Keith. The subtleties speak volumes. So glad you put the spotlight on this gem. As a guitarist, there's a lot to be learned here.
If you like this then I would check out Keiths album "Love, Pain and the whole crazy thing". Basically every song is amazing. Especially Stupid Boy and Everybody.
So glad you did this song. It’s a masterpiece. John is a beast, of course, but Keith is a phenomenal player in his own right. He’s not as technically sound as others, but he’s a master at “less is more”. Only plays a few notes but so expressively. Also just wanted to add about John: he’s a master at knowing what a song needs. He just has a feel for knowing what notes to hit, and he rarely overplays. Of course he adds his own flair, but it almost never feels out of place. Obviously I’m a fan of John Mayer. 😂
Actually I disagree that Keith is less technically sound. I think the whole less is more thing is something that is learned much further along than being able to shred and is just proof that he has great feel
I remember watching this when it came out and was obsessed. These 2 artists shaped who I became as a guitar player for 3 years after I broke out of my metal phase. My sister and brother in law managed to find a torrent of the crossroads performance and gave it to me on a dvd for my birthday. The menu was titled “Daniel’s dreamboats” lmfao. It was probably the best birthday present I ever got. The chemistry between these 2 on stage is unmatched!
@@zac3392 That was great too, but it seemed like John and Keith had a special connection. If you had told me they had been performing together for years, I'd believe it!
Love these two guys together. Mayer is my guy but I found Keith Urban through him. A very underrated guitarist. I'd love him to do a full on blues album and take it on a joint tour with Mayer... Might make Mayer shake it up a little and get back to his best.
Just two of the modern day greats enjoying a bit of jamming together. And yeah, that multi-bend section in the solo is incredible. So much expression that almost gives a lap-steel feel that wouldn’t be possible just fingering the notes.
Two of my favorite artists TOGETHER. MAGIC! I watch this Crossroads concert over and over. This collaboration SHOULD have produced an album and a tour!! These two extremely talented artists compliment each other so darn well!!! They can do each other's songs as if it's their own. One of the best collaborations I have ever heard!!!! This song is also one of my favorites because of Keith's sexy, slinky, melodic guitar playing. John adds such beautiful touches to it. Both of these guys also offer such complimentary stage presence as well. Easy on the ear and eye. ABSOLUTE PERFECTION!!!!
I think that Keith has always been a super strong song writer. It kinda got under my skin when Bo Burnham called him out for being inauthentic formulaic bro country. I would love to see Keith live.
YES! This end solo from Mayer remains one of my favourites of all time - so perfectly judged and so much to learn from only a few bars - dynamics, technique, tone all amazing. Also you can see he’s *really* feeling it! Fantastic songwriting allows for it however, so major credit to Keith Urban too
This song is such a gift to Keith/Mayer fans. Their tones are just dripping with nostalgia/wistfulness and John's voice/solos are so perfect for this song. This and the album version of "Stupid Boy" are definitely my favorite Keith Urban songs.
Soo glad you found this one it’s a rare Gem I think Mayor said he wished he wrote this one enjoy the concert It’s magical performance together loved seeing your delight and only adding to this amazing song gets me every time top 10 for sure
The two guys work very well together, their mutual respect comes through, plus their respective styles compliment rather than compete, two 'Pros' who are successful for the right reasons. The song is basically romantic fiction, one of those paperback stories, but executed incredibly well.
I have been the biggest fans of this crossroads and this song since I saw it. So damn glad you’re doing this, became an urban fan after this crossroads episode. Mayer never disappoints and Kieth is a killer player too.
I love this version of the song, harmonies are fantastic. I had never thought of different guitar parts “staying out of each other’s way” but that’s such a smart way of describing it! Love your videos thank you for posting, I learn a lot from you
Most reaction/analysis videos are focused on theory and mechanical technique. It's so heartwarming to see Michael getting blown away by the choice of notes, feeling the groove, and deeply appreciating the musicians and their craft. Love it, thank you, Michael 🥰
Michael you're awesome!!!!!!! Thank you very much for doing this one for me I appreciate it and appreciate what you do!!!!! These videos are so awesome, please keep them coming!!!!
As a non-player but music lover/listener, the music is incredible. Becomes even moreso when you realize just how technical the guitar is, and just how much effort it takes to look absolutely effortless. The level of playing is just absolutely top tier - and they look like they are just enjoying each other's talent and playing together - having fun. Awesome.
Had the pleasure of seeing KU in a private venue a few yrs ago in Chicago. Maybe 2500 ppl but he put on a show worthy of 50,000. The guy is a freaking rock star! He absolutely loves his fans and plays with the appreciation that that fans got him there and he pays it back by delivering a stellar show. I didn’t know his music, but i left a fan with mad respect.
Michael, please react to Gravity from the Meyer/Urban Crossroads if you want to see and here (in your words) some hot shit!! Some of the most soul drenching tones, runs, solo's and phrasing I've ever heard. This Urban/Mayer Crossroads is just a clinic on how to play while also allowing the song to breathe with some space and beautiful phrasing. This is one of the best collaborations I've ever seen and I would LOVE if you would check Gravity out by these two amazing players. I love your channel and although I don't always comment, I always punch that thumbs up so CZcams keeps your channel on the top of my feed. Keep punching and grinding, your content is amazing as ever!
I was going to choose "Gravity" at first as it's my all time favorite Mayer sing and resonates with me on a personal level for reasons other than what John wrote it for I'm sure, the reason I chose this one is because I just love the intro to this song and how Keith just let's John go crazy on his song..... This is definitely one of the best CMT CROSSROADS they did definitely the BEST when it came to guitar players with the Mayer Paisley one coming in at a very close second
One of the best collabs ever not just this song but the whole show. Thank you for breaking this down its a fascinating watch. I loved that look on your face when john let rip on that second solo. Please do more mayer breakdowns or keith. It really helps as a guitar player to understand the theory of the song. Great job man this is up there with the patrick droney video which is my favourite of yours 🤩
Thank you for reviewing this. It’s been my number one example of a perfect guitar and vocal duet for at least a decade now. And yes…that multi-step bend is exquisite.

Yes to this!!!!

Their cover of Don’t let me down is a masterpiece, especially solos !!!!!

I really enjoyed their redition of gravity. They harmony during where the light is...is insane.
I watched John and Kieth play Don't let me down live and learned to play it on acoustic guitar.
Keith is truly one of the most melodic players of all time. Incredible stuff
Keith is the freaking G.O.A.T!!!! He’s been a hero of mine for about 20 years now! This crossroads gives me crazy nostalgia!
Yes, became a fan of Keith's in 2002, he was awesome then, and continues to today.

No one has mentioned Tom Bukovac holding down rhythm in the back. Tom has been on all of Keith’s albums…he is the GOAT! #unclelarry #tombukovac

And notable mention is the solid drumming and stellar drum sounds by Chris McHugh.
My favorite Keith Urban song and Mayer takes it up a notch
