What to do when your Painting fails...

- Hey everyone, now I'm sure this has happened to every artist at least once. You start a painting, you're in a creative mindset, and then what happens? The painting ends up not looking the way you first imagined it would look. This can happen to anyone. The key is to not give up, it's okay to start fresh. In this video I attempt to fix mistakes I made with this portrait. As you all know I'm an abstract painter, I don't normally do portrait's. But I'm wanting to learn, and success takes time through lots of trial and error!
Hope you enjoy, see you all next week!

Loved, “ when you don’t know anything else to do, you add pink to the hair.”😅
Gwen love where you are going with this, love the bigger face, colors looseness!!
Hi Gwen, love, love this youtube. It gives me hope to overcome faillure... You are such a model as a person and as an artist!!!! Can not wait to see the final.
Carolle.....thanks girl...this happens to all artists so not to worry.....you have grown so much and I am so proud of you...
You’re a wonderful teacher. Your teaching is different and practical
How kind of you to leave this comment.....thank you...
so glad you are painting an abstract realism. I love watching you paint. I love this last girl you are doing. looking forward to the finished project!
Joan....thank you so much for your comment....let's just hope she turns out better than the others but if not...well....that's life isn't it....
I also am painting abstract faces. The latest has green outlined features and blue curly hair. They are fun to do and interesting. I am learning from your video. Thanks
I soooooo appreciate you being vulnerable!!! I am a new artist and I tried to paint a girl…and it made me feel simply awful!!! It is so good to know that even someone who I consider so talented has struggles. It gives me hope!!
Thank you so much for your comment. We all have struggles so never, never give up as we need to get all those awful paintings out of our system so we can do the good ones....
Enjoyed immensely. Can’t wait for the next video.
Thank you so much for your comment.....loved it!!!
Oh Gwen
Just loved this. I've been struggling with a larger painting and have so many layers. You are such an inspiration. Looking forward to your final painting.
Donna.....don't we all struggle but look at how much you have grown...WOW.....
This last one looks like Jackie Onassis -wide eyes. I like the expression. I did Abstract self-portrait which is very loose and kind of wild. I tried several times -then one day it just came together.
Thanks for videos. I look forward to them weekly. You are wonderful abstract artist.
Louise.....thank you for your lovely comment. I would love to see your wild self-portrait as I bet it is great...
When you started painting this, the first thing that I noticed was that she was shifted more towards the left. I personally don't like doing Portraits, but most of what I do is turning out to be portraits. I am fascinated when I see artists having "FUN" painting and enjoying the process. I totally dislike the process but what keeps me going is how the end makes me feel. I much do the forest and floral and still life paintings than Portraits.
Portraits are hard for me but I love applying paint to canvas so I always have fun even when doing portraits....although it may not have seemed that way in the video. I just accept that some turn our good and some are to be painted over.
Dear Gwen, you are ALWAYS fun! One thing about paintings that "don't work out", is that if I release the negativity, and look at it honestly, I will always see something that I really like.......color interaction, mood, texture, etc.. I make a note of that, literally, so I don't forget....hehe. Thank you.
Jennifer....you are so right as there is always something in each painting that is beautiful. Thanks for the reminder as I needed that....

Thanks for that! Very courageous of you on every level.
Thanks for your comment and yes, I almost didn't post it but decided what the hell ...so I did....and your comment made my day so thanks...
Funny you should post this as I have been doing the repeated start overs with portraits too! 😅 I always learn something great from your videos. It’s taken me a week to understand how I want the eyes to speak. I paint watercolor, so my favorite eyes are by Janet Rogers. Loose and yet draws you in. She also mixes the hair with color blends that can have neutrals. She truely is a muse on portraits of women. Anyway, I hope you find that magic this week! I hope this helps to make us better artists for going through such intense battles of not giving up! Take care and thank you!
Hang in there with your portraits......they are not easy. I love Janet's work as well. Don't worry I will find the magic but when?....but no matter what I will always have fun with my art.
Just before the ink…loved it!!😄but it’s your art!😊
Pink.. not ink
Yes, just before the pink....don't worry the pink will disappear ...
I loved them all!
Pamela....you are so sweet....thank you!!!
Inspirational. X
Thanks for your comment....it means a lot...
Wow I think you needed to stop half way and take a breather… cause I thought it was gorgeous. Haven’t watched the end yet😄🤞
Denise....love your comment .....let's see how the final piece turns out as I haven't a clue as well.
Sometimes I think we get in our own way😉
@@deniselini1366....you got that right...
“Has this ever happened to you?”
Only every other day.
Love your comment!!!
I love your work and thankful you share it. Is it acrylic paint you use? Do you use oil for drops on acrylic?
Thank you so much for your comment....I use oil paint and the drips are done with oil thinned with Gamsol
We as artists are our own worst critics……..
You hit the nail on the head....thank you
where is the next video of the women?
Gwen, I think you are WAY too hard on yourself. I loved the paintings. The only thing wrong with the first was the forehead was too high. Remember, you are not doing realism totally, so it WILL look different than peoples art who IS looking for perfection! I paint abstraction realism all the time, I had to realize this same thing. Add color you Normally don't...like blue/purple in shaded areas and more obvious shapes (exaggerated even).
Thanks for your comment and help....yes, you are right.....I am way too hard on myself.
My girls faces always look ugly. Even using the loomis method, my girls are not cute.
